TUTORIAL SHEET-1

[System of forces and resultant (Concurrent forces)]

1. State and explain parallelogram law.

2. Two forces are applied at the point A of a hook support as shown in figure. Determine the magnitude and direction of the resultant force by the trigonometric method using (i) parallelogram law, and (ii) triangle law.

3. The two forces P and Q act on a bolt as shown in Fig. Determine their resultant.

4. The 200-N force is to be resolved into components along lines a-a′ and b-b′. (a) Determine the angle α using trigonometry knowing that the component along a-a′ is to be 150 N. (b) What is the corresponding value of the component along b-b′?

5. Determine the x and y components of each of the forces shown.

6. Member BD exerts on member ABC a force P directed along line BD. Knowing that P must have a 960-N vertical component, determine (a) the magnitude of the force P, (b) its horizontal component.

7. The end of boom O as shown in figure is

subjected to three concurrent forces.

Determine the magnitude and direction of the

resultant force.

8. Knowing that α = 65°, determine the resultant

of the three forces shown.

9. For the block of Problem 8 above, determine (a) the required value of α if the resultant of the three forces shown is to be parallel to the incline, (b) the corresponding magnitude of the resultant.

10. An irregularly shaped machine component is

held in the position shown by three clamps.

Knowing that FA = 940 N, determine the

magnitudes of the forces FB and FC exerted

by the other two clamps.
