The beautiful thing about a new year is that it always seems to bring with it a sense of revitalization – a revival of purpose and collective commitment to a standard of excellence in teaching, learning, and service to our school community. Colt Country has always been deeply rooted in pursuing opportunities that will expand and challenge the students in our existing programs to engage in continuous quality improvements. This growth mindset has given us much for which to be grateful as students are constantly recognized at the local and state level for achievements in academic and co-curricular activities under the tutelage of our outstanding faculty and staff. It is always a wonderful feeling to watch our school community branch out in extraordinary lengths to ensure that students receive quality education and individualized attention to their needs in and outside of the classroom. We have many paths to success and we encourage our students to choose the path that will not only challenge them but that will also shape them for global impact and significant change. We are enthused about our new program developments such as Coding, PASL, and MTL and expand upon others such as Agriscience. We constantly endeavor to channel our energy to secure programs that will leave no window of opportunity unopened for any of our students regardless of their post-secondary choices. We view this not only as a demonstration of our commitment to maintain very high standards, but also as an investment towards enhancing the competitiveness of our students to be able to contend on a global scale! As much as we celebrate what we give our students in Colt Country, we also celebrate what our parents, guardians and community partners add to our rich school environment. Without the reinforcements at home, we would not be able to sustain or to maintain our standard of excellence. You deserve much of the credit for our many successes. As I sit back and marvel at the all of the things we have been able to accomplish, sometimes with limited resources, I am overwhelmed with a sense of gratitude. I am thankful that I am able to lead in a school that is full of reasons to count my many blessings and to be assured that there is always more to come because of all of you. You help us to Grow and to remain in all things #ColtsUnited. You have my sincerest wishes for a joyful, and positively blissful holiday season. Sincerely, Vivian Suarez, Principal ISSUE NO 2. Set,

Dear Colt Family, It is hard to believe that we are quickly approaching Thanksgiving and Winter Break and of course ushering in the New Year.

On November 4th, 2017 BCPS hosted its annual EdTalk at Hollywood Hills High School. Our very own Assistant Principal Mrs. Patty Brown was selected to engage in an in-depth conversation about the state of affairs in Colt Country with the Chief of School Performance and Accountability, Dr. Valerie Wanza. Stephen Marante who is our student advisor to the School Board of Broward County was also given the opportunity to share his experiences. Monifa Nealy was selected as a Table Facilitator. Also our SGA students were afforded the opportunity to attend this spectacular event. Ed Talk is a public forum designed to engage the community in discussing educational strategies and advancing the District's Strategic Plan. Participants are able to engage in a discourse with Superintendent Runcie, other School Board members and Senior District Leaders!

I love trees. I love trees for the same reason that I love everybody in here as an educator—the students, the parents, yes the grandparents, the teachers, the administrators. So just like trees, your roots run deep—for your love and your compassion for your students and you see that by the fact that you are here today. You have a strong, positive presence. You are hard to miss. Your arms branch out. And as we talk about the socio-emotional needs of our students in our community, how are you branching out? Because the fruit you bear is beautiful… (sic).

An Excerpt from Patty Brown’s Talk

…If you have a students at your table listen to what they have to say because I heard someone say earlier today, they go, ‘Oh I want to hear what the student has to say because they’re the leaders of tomorrow’. That’s not true; they’re the leaders of today. If you have a student sitting at your table, they are the leaders on their campus right

now; they are impacting students and they will have impact on the world, but they’re impacting their sports teams,

their schools, their communities right now so listen to what they have to say because they have the most important

voice…(sic).

Coral Springs High School is one of the few High Schools in Broward who has a Latinos in Action (LIA) Program. Mr. Fabian Calero heads LIA, which was founded by Dr. Enriquez. CSHS had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Enriquez to Colt Country and witnessing him inspire students to take action! Our students have taken the charge to Lead by example helping to celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month and volunteer at Hunt Elementary weekly. Our Program is thriving!

Personalization for Academic and Social-Emotional Learning Ninth (9th) graders Briann Pulidore, Thein-Phu Huynh and Sebastian Evans shared their business ventures/ entrepreneurial goals with Dr. Tameka King in a candid conversation about their futures. These students are organically a part of our PASL Program, which focuses on ensuring 9th grade students remain academically focused and involved in the school community. Having a strong academic and social core during freshmen year provides a solid foundation for students to build upon for the remainder of their high school years. Brianna Pulidore is a property manager for rental properties alongside her father Michael who named the company in her honor – Brianna Marie Investments, Inc. Brianna became interested in real estate and property management when she was only 12 years old. Her father recognizing this passion and the opportunity to open a door for her that would continue to be a source of income as she matured quickly reined her in and began to train her. Her duties include picking up rent, making sure repairs are done in a timely manner, making payments and using MLS to look up properties to purchase. She is known around her rental properties as The Landlord. Brianna is one special lady and her adopted siblings think so too. As she continues to excel academically and socially, we wish her the best of luck. She wants her parents to know that they are the best! Thien Phu Huynh and his cousin Crystal Thai at the age of 13 started a clothing business called Syphine. This business venture began as part of a Language Arts project. They initially thought to name the business Saigon after the islands due to the people from Asia and hoping to broaden the understanding that Asians can influence American clothing industries. As a symbol they selected a combination of the Vietnamese and Philippine stars. Thien-Phu and his cousin Crystal both love clothes so creating a market for students to purchase clothing that speaks to one of their passions seemed right. Though neither will pursue this as a career choice, there is no doubt that a young man whose name means ‘gift from God’, who has a sister whose name means ‘millionaire,’ will not find a way to make his gifts work in his favor. They think the world of their parents! Keep making us proud! Sebastain Evan works with his father Bill on designing 3D Print car parts through their business Autofangs. These car part accessories are all the latest raves. Sebastian and his father brainstorm what they want to create and try to generate interest by making it look cool and unique. If their vision is too hard for them to design on their own, they will outsource for the production of it. Sebastian is really talented in envisioning designs and his father is skilled in facilitating his ideas. Sebastian admits that he has many business ventures going, but he is especially endeared to Autofangs. His interest in entrepreneurship came about simply because he liked having money and being able to go places. His products cost about 30 to 40 dollars and his business is doing very well. Sebastian considers his dad his mentor and best friend. You rock! https://www.autofangs.com/blog/

Agriscience Adds to Family

We have several new additions to Colt County from revitalized landscaping in the front of the school to new Colt colored trashcans around campus to re-painted bathrooms in the front office to a butterfly garden area! We are making improvements to our campus on a regular basis. Stay Tuned! #ColtsUnited

Amanda Moritimer, Agriscience teacher, adds more animals to her “farm”. In addition to the chickens, she now has rabbits named Indy and Iron (Iron City Mauler) in the family. Rumor has it that Colt Country will soon have goats, too. Really Amanda?

Opening date is still a secret.

CSHS will be opening its very own Art Gallery. Student work will be on display and in many cases available for purchase. We are excitedly planning our opening night, which will be an unveiling of something spectacular and special to all patrons of the Coral Springs community. We will be inviting the entire community, including dignitaries, as this project that our students have been so passionately working to complete is not something to miss. Stay tuned!

In an effort to have our campus reflect our standard of excellence, we have added four banners to the front of our campus: Academic, Excellence, Success, and Co-Curricular. These mores are the some of the roots to our beliefs about success. GO COLTS!

Despite many setbacks this year, our Band and Color Guard continue to persevere under the direction of Band Director, Brett Dawson. Honored to perform at Broward’s Gifted Symposium our Jazz Band was a showstopper. Our Marching Band had an amazing performance at the Striking Cobra Invitational at Park Vista High School, placing 3rd in Class 4A and 5th out of the entire competition. Let’s wish them well as they travel to Tampa on November 18th to compete in the State Marching Band Tournament. #ColtStrong #ColtsUnited

Coach Vincent Ziccardi and Assistants coach our Varsity Football team to a victory over age-old rival J.P Taravella for the coveted annual Mayor’s Cup. City Commissioner Larry Vignolia presented Principal Suarez and Coach Ziccardi with the trophy mid field. The Mayor’s Cup will remain in Colt Country for the remainder of the year until we meet on the field of victory again next year. We have conquered every football team in Coral Springs! Go Colts!

Congratulations to the Homecoming Queen Sanai Burke and King Ricardo Packer. They were voted on by their peers and were simply sensational at the Homecoming game and as they danced the night away at Homecoming. Those smiles tell the entire story. We were honored to have them represent their senior class! Thanks to Stefani Love (SGA sponsor) and SGA for a truly enchanting Homecoming event and an entire week of wonderful inclusive activities for the entire school community! enchanting Homecoming event and an entire week of wonderful inclusive activities for the entire school community!

Drama Instructor Lucia Deus hosted a Colt Celebrity Lip Sync Battle on Oct. 25th! That’s right! Faculty, students, and administration competed for a chance to win a beautiful golden trophy adorned with a golden microphone and of course bragging rights for the school year. The competition was fierce, but Queen Beyonce…ahem… Brown took home the award. Assistant Principal Patty Brown and CSHS’s Step Team performed Beyonce’s “Move Your Body” for the win. The other acts included: Vivian Suarez (Principal) & students; Tameka King (AP) & Fabian Calero (Behavior Specialist); Cory Baker (Guest Teacher); Lesha Rose (French Teacher) & Sharon Friedman (Math Teacher); Brenda Schaffer (CTE Teacher), Aruna Lien (Culinary Teacher) & Tracey Robinson (CTE Teacher); and Peter Dengel (Science Teacher).

October 10th under the direction of the incomparable MaryCatherine Salo (Chorus Director) and Florida State University intern Sidney Clarke-Leclerique. Dr. Anthony Zoeller also led the men’s choral ensemble. The entire night was simply enchanting. Principal Suarez said it best when describing what so many of us experienced.

“I had the pleasure and honor to watch Mrs. Salo and her amazing team lead our students …I was highly impressed as Mrs. Salo basically conducted a lesson for well over hundred students during the concert. We all watched her skills and expertise in action. The students were all focused and she held their attention her. It is evident that she has developed a rapport with her students that equates to success in the classroom. The students sang beautifully…” - Suarez

The American Geographical Society has named our very own Kathleen Pickering as a 2017 Geography Teacher Fellow. As part of the award for being selected as a Teacher Fellow, Mrs. Pickering will attend the AGS Fall Symposium, Geography 2050 in November at Columbia University in New York. Dr. John Konarski, CEO of the American Geographical Society said, “We are very pleased to be able to have Kathleen among 50 of the best teachers in the country join us in New York City in November…the collective experience and expertise of these Geography Teacher Fellows will be an integral component as AGS leads the cause for the future of geography and geospatial science.” We are so proud of Mrs. Pickering. You ROCK!

National Merit Scholar Semi-Finalist Jake Shipe Jake Shipe is one of 1.6 million students to take the PSAT/NMSQT to compete for the academic recognition of The National Merit Scholarship Program. Of the 1.6 million entrants, some 50,000 with the highest PSAT/NMSQT Selection Index scores (calculated by doubling the sum of the Reading, Writing and Language, and Math Test scores) qualify for recognition in the National Merit Scholarship Program. We are overjoyed for Jake and his accomplishments! We know he will continue to make us proud! Go Colts!

Commended Students are named on the basis of a nationally applied Selection Index score that may vary from year to year and is typically below the level required for participants to be named Semi-finalists in their respective states. Although Commended Students do not continue in the competition for National Merit Scholarships, some of these students do become candidates for Special Scholarships sponsored by corporations and businesses. You make us proud!

Dr. Georgy was first inspired to begin Grumbacher painting because her father painted as a hobby when she was young. It was evident at the age of five that she had inherited his talent. Her drawings would be hanged in her class and featured in the Art room. She attended E.G.C.(English Girls' College) from age three(3) until she graduated so much of her work was displayed over the years. Born in the cosmopolitan city of Alexandria (Egypt) she was not encouraged to pursue an art career as that it not revered in the Egyptian culture though Alexandria has a lot of magic

and history. Therefore, she studied in a different field at Alexandria University and did not begin painting again until after getting married, being encouraged by her husband to pursue her passion. She began producing portraits by pencil or charcoal in 15 minutes only after sitting opposite to the person to be portrayed. This return to her first love was a second discovery for her, so she started painting most of her paintings especially in the year 2002 and some of the paintings were produced in only one day, others took a week or more. Though she received her MBA and Ph.D. and pursued teaching at the university level, she still joined several exhibitions her last exhibition being at Nova Southeastern University as a Business faculty and not as an Art faculty member. Her favorite artist /artistic piece(s) is Salvador Dali because she also paints surrealism art besides abstract, landscapes and portraits. Every piece is dear to her. Most of her pieces were left in Egypt, but she believes Saint Virgin Mary is her favorite piece because her eyes can look at you from all angles. Like most who are artistic, Dr. Georgy works only when she is inspired. She likes to paint at home in a place she carved out in her living area. When she starts painting, she is passionate until she finishes it. She describes her paintings as passionate, imaginative and spontaneous all at the same time!

Dr. Tameka King, Assistant Principal, coined the phrase “ Inside the Teacher’s Classified (which is a play on words). She wanted to find a way to celebrate not only what teachers did in the “classroom”, but also those secret /”classified” roles that affords them the opportunity to wear many diverse hats. She wanted students and the school community alike to understand that for many educators while teaching may be their primary source of income, many of them are driven by other unseen passions. Let’s take a closer look inside of the classified worlds of Dr. Hala Georgy (Math Professor) and Ms. Rosa Gonzalez (English Professor) on page 14.

ROSA GONZALEZ’S CLASSIFIED

Rosa Gonzalez is a Custom Cake Baker who specializes in Decadent Confections baking. Ever since she was little she had always loved baking. The Food Network has ALWAYS been her favorite channel to watch. While in college, she decided to take a Basic Cake course and to no one’s surprise she was a natural! Everything came so effortlessly to her, so after taking the 6-weeks course she was IN LOVE with baking and cake decorating! This newfound passion for baking made her want to take as many classes as she could. She completed a 4-week Advanced Decorating Techniques course and then a cookie, cake pop and Charlotte cake course! Soon after, she started a little “at home” business baking mini cakes for $5/$6 and got to make a few birthday cakes, quinceañera cakes and even cakes for events at her university. To this day, she has continued baking and selling cakes. Other than being a natural at baking and cake decorating, it has been a great stress reliever for her. She gets so involved with the details that go into custom cakes that she quickly forgets everything else going on. Plus, she loves bringing the “cake visions” to life, whether it’s a specific flavor or a particular design! She gets to be creative when working on the cakes and once she gets in her zone she can bring that vision to life!
