WELCOME TO ALVERNOAt the start of each semester, the College community comes together at Convocation to celebrate and welcome new students and their families.

DATES TO REMEMBER

Aug 25Time to move in! Residence halls are open from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. A limited number of carts are available. Families are welcome to help!

Aug 27Back to school for new students. Classes begin at 8 a.m. New students are officially welcomed into the Alverno community at Convocation (3 p.m., Pitman Theatre). Families are encouraged to attend and are invited to the welcome picnic that follows (4 p.m., Reiman Plaza).

Aug 27–31Visit the Student Involvement Fair (La Verna Commons lobby) to meet representatives from student organizations and get involved.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO

Urge your student to participate in Welcome Week and Super 6 Series. Events include a series of social, recreational, cultural and artistic programs held during the first six weeks of the semester, designed to help your student make connections.

Make sure she starts the new semester strong by finalizing her financial aid and business matters, purchasing or renting books and locating her classrooms. She should also attend a Best Start meeting with the Advising Office.

Encourage her to program the Campus Safety emergency number, 414-382-6911, into her phone.

Sept 12Alverno comes together to celebrate the new school year at the Opening of School Mass (11 a.m., Chapel), followed by the Community Picnic (noon, 39th Street entrance). All faith traditions are welcome, and classes are canceled from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to allow students to participate.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO:

If your student is living in the residence hall, send her mail and care packages.

Download the Super 6 Series activity booklet at alverno.edu/campuslife. The more engaged a student is, the more likely she is to feel connected to campus and to graduate.

If your student is living at home, remind her that you’re there to support her. Ask how school is going and what you can do to help her adjust.

Encourage your student to get to know her faculty. We value collaboration — that’s why faculty and staff go by their first names.

Ask her if she has joined a student group. There are more than 40 to choose from!

Attend Alverno’s Thanksgiving Dinner. Enjoy a meal with your student and the Alverno family. Register at alverno.edu/parents by Nov. 8.

Encourage your student to clear up any academic or financial holds so she can register for the spring semester.

It’s almost the end of the semester. Families of resident students, find out when your student is coming home for winter break. Families of commuter students, find out when your student is done with classes.

College students tend to explore, challenge and develop their spirituality. Encourage your student to meet with the Campus Ministry staff to assist in her spiritual journey.

EXPRESS YOURSELFAlverno students don’t have to major in the arts to express themselves. Creativity abounds in and out of the classroom, like at this dance showcase.

Dec 10–13During final assessments, your student will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what she has learned and how she has grown in her coursework.

Dec 9An important part of Alverno’s commencement festivities are the Bestowing of the Kente and Latinas con Fuerza ceremonies, cultural rites of passage that honor graduates’ African-American and/or Latina heritages as well as the people who have supported them on their educational journeys.

Dec 21–Jan 1Happy Holidays! The College is closed starting Dec. 21 and will re-open on Jan. 2, 2019.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO:

There are many services on campus (tutoring, writing and math help, computer center) to help students be successful with assessments. And encouraging notes or care packages from home help, too!

Encourage her to learn skills and practices to manage stress. Campus counseling and health services are free. Call 414-382-6119 to learn more.

After final assessments, have a discussion with your student about the semester’s challenges and successes. Your support and encouragement will help her continue to graduation.

Jan 22If your student’s first semester at Alverno begins in January 2019, then her first day of class will begin Tuesday, Jan. 22. New students are officially welcomed into the Alverno community at Convocation (3 p.m., Pitman Theatre). Jan 23Welcome back! The spring 2019 semester begins for returning students (including those who began their Alverno journeys in fall 2018).

UPCOMING: Feb 1Priority deadline for FAFSA. It’s important to meet this deadline to ensure your student is considered for the maximum amount of financial aid.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO:

If your student is considering changing her major, listen and encourage her exploration. This is a normal part of college.

Support your student as she makes mistakes. It’s an important part of growing up and learning.

Scholarship and financial aid deadlines are approaching. Does your student need your information or assistance to complete the FAFSA application? Our financial aid counselors are here to help. Contact them at 414-382-6262.

Attend the Workforce Career and Internship Fair with your student. Wisconsin’s private, nonprofit colleges and universities host this fair to provide employers the opportunity to meet hundreds of college students and alumni seeking internship, professional employment and graduate school opportunities.

Encourage her to start exploring summer job and internship opportunities. Many have early deadlines!

March 29Join us for a day of learning together at Alverno’s annual Community Conference. Classes are cancelled so that students and faculty may participate in a day of discussion and discovery (also open to the public).

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO:

Encourage your student to visit the Career and Professinal Development Center, which offers tips and pointers on creating a résumé, interviewing and professional dress.

Recommend that she apply for at least 10 scholarships. She can find a list of opportunities at alverno.edu/financialaid. If you notice that your student isn’t herself, don’t panic. Encourage her to seek help. She can visit the Dean of Students Office, Academic Advising or Counseling and Health Services. Staff in all of these departments are dedicated to helping your student be successful.

Make sure your student is all set to register for fall 2019 classes. Start a conversation with her about which courses she’s going to take and what she’s looking forward to.

Invite your student to consider how she can get the most out of her education. What does she want to accomplish in her second, third or fourth year at Alverno?

May 2At the Student Leadership Celebration (5:30–7p.m., Conference Center), we celebrate the excellent work of our students.

May 13–16 During final assessments, your student will be given the opportunity to demonstrate what she has learned and how she has grown in her coursework.

WHAT FAMILIES CAN DO:

Encourage your student to access campus resources. Writing and math resource centers are available to assist students. Your student’s peer leader can also help her find the support she needs.

Talk with your student about her summer plans. She can continue to enhance her education by completing an internship, taking summer courses, studying abroad or gaining work experience. It’s also a good time to discuss whether she’s pursuing on-campus employment.

Empower your student to take advantage of the confidence and independence she gained this year.

Help your student identify her next steps by asking what classes she likes, what she is good at, and what out-of-classroom opportunities might help her discover her career path.

Celebrate that your student has concluded her first year of school!
