Welcome • I wish to take this opportunity to welcome all the new First year students to Alupe University College
• I also welcome the parents who have allowed their children to join Alupe University College
• I also extend this welcome to all the academic and administrative staff who have joined us at this time
• I also wish to thank all those who have worked tirelessly to prepare for this occasion
• You become the second cohort to be welcomed to our new Main campus out of the 4 cohorts so far.

Welcome to the new COVID 19 normal• Hand Wash frequently With Soap And Running Water ‐20sec• Wear An Approved Mask At All Times Except When Eating• Social Distance At Least 2 Meters from any other person• Avoid Large Gatherings Including Kamukunjis• Stay in the room when free and stay alone at home or in the room• Avoid bars , markets, social and political gatherings• Assume the person next to you has COVID 19 including boyfriend,

Pioneers status• You are the 4th cohort to be admitted to AUC• Pioneer status is upto 4‐5 yearly cohorts• You are therefore almost the last cohort to be called pioneers and
the 4th for me to address• We shall be graduating the First pioneer class in 2021 if all goes
well as per plan• Pioneer status has a number of related issues

• It is one of the 39 public National Universities• One of the eight Constituent Colleges of public Universities

Staff and students
• AUC has a workforce of 79 staff – 38 academic staff (31 teaching, 4 Deans, 3 Senior Management)
– 41 non‐teaching– We shall increase the number of academic staff to 46 by end of 2020/21 FY and non‐teaching staff to 57 ‐ total shall be 103
• AUC now has about 820 students (80 PSSP students included)

Background• Alupe University College (AUC), is a Constituent College of Moi University
• It was established through the Alupe University College Order 2015; Gazette Notice No 153 of 24th July 2015.
• Its Council was constituted vide special gazette notice No.136 of 7th November 2016.
• It was started following a request by the then BusiaNorth Constituency community to the then President of Kenya H.E Hon Mwai Kibaki when he visited the area on 18th September 2007.
• Subsequently it started as the Alupe Campus of Moi University in 2008.

Aspirations• To be a centre of excellence in integrated training and research in the health, biological, physical and social sciences.
• To harness the strengths of the integrated approach to enable the Country attain Vision 2030 and the tenets of the Sustainable development goals (SDGs).
• To work with the neighbouring KEMRI, KALRO and LBDA scientists in teaching, research and service provision to the Kenyan population and in the region.
• To be the bastion of knowledge in the sciences (social sciences, health sciences, biological sciences and physical sciences).

Internet connectivity• The Alupe University College is connected to the Kenya Education Network (KENET) at the Hospital campus. KENET is the provider of LAN (local area network) to all Universities in Kenya
• The Library, catering area and adjacent Offices are covered by safaricom WIFI and LAN
• Main campus is covered by Safaricom• The Student organisation should provide WIFI in the hostels where applicable

Social life• Extra‐curricular activities
– Sports, swimming, music, dancing, making friends– Need to manage time and balance activities
• Avoid drinking – preferably be a tea totaller• Avoid substances of abuse • Border town social activities
– Busia is a vibrant border town– Full of life within Kenya and Uganda– If it is your objective to live large outside campus let us know so that we release you from AUC

Transportation • With the upgrading of the Busia‐Malaba Road to bitumen standards a number of shuttles have opened up on this route including Bungoma Line shuttle from Bungoma to Busia
• The University can also be approached from the Mumias‐Busia Road, Kisumu‐Busia Road
• The University vans will be used for any formal trips for students for academic functions
• The University vans will be used for organised and timetabled student activities

Amenities • We have water from our borehole that has sufficient water on campus.
• We are working with the Busia water company to ensure consistency in water supply as an additional source of water
• Power outages are common in the area. We have a generator for the library, catering and offices

Health care• Health care of students on campus is solely the responsibility of the student and the parents
• We encourage all students to register with NHIF – a monthly contribution of 500/‐ and you choose a health facility of your choice in Busia County for outpatient care but open for inpatient care when registered
• Inform the Dean of students and your family as soon as you begin to feel unwell.
• Emergency care shall be provided at the Alupe Sub‐County Hospital

Security • Your security is our concern and so secure yourself first as a
precaution– The area around campus is relatively safe– Do not get into bad company with persons that are security risks
– Do not bring unknown persons to campus especially the hostels
– Inform our security, police, Dean of students and other students of suspicious persons
– Walk in groups in the evening and night to and from the campus and hostels
– We have armed security from the National Police Service 24/7 around campus

Cooking in the rooms
• Cooking in the rooms depends on your agreement with the landlord, but it is not encouraged
• Catering services are available on campus on a pay as you eat (PAYE) basis
• Be careful where and what you eat to avoid contacting diseases like cholera, diarrhea, typhoid fever, dysentery etc

Co‐habiting
• This is not allowed and will lead to dismissal from the hostel ‐ non resident status
• Bringing members of the opposite sex to the room is not allowed as it inconveniences your room mates
• Married couples should seek outside own accomodation
