SHADE WINGS – wings that increase driving safety and comfort

64 percent of all weather-related car accidents are caused by the glare of the sun. In Germany alone, glare is responsible for more than 3,300 accidents with casualties every year. This remains largely underestimated as a cause of accidents.

That is where the team of founders Unimir GmbH, Stephan Schicht, Robert Schwippl and Manuel Kluge, comes in. The three Bergakademie gradu-

ates aim to make driving safer and more comfor-table with SHADE WINGS. SHADE WINGS is the first retrofittable add-on sun visor in the world. Fitted to existing cars, it protects against sunshine glare from both the front and side. As a result, SHADE WINGS reduce the risk of accidents, es-pecially in rapidly changing visibility conditions. As drivers no longer have to constantly adjust their existing car sun visor, and can therefore concentrate on more important aspects of dri-ving, they also feel more comfortable. SHADE WINGS is certified by German vehicle inspection body DEKRA and compatible with virtually all cars thanks to its innovative components.

Former recipients of an EXIST start-up scholarship from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy, the founders are now suppor-ted by a tech startup scholarship from the Saxon Development Bank (SAB). The crowdfunding

campaign from mid-June 2018 on is an important milestone for the team. SHADE WINGS will then be offered for sale for the first time. That’s when the three’s work gets really exciting.

Alumni Ambassador in Kenya - Dennis Borsdorff starts his career in Voi

After my Master’s Degree, I was given the oppor-tunity to start my career at Taita Taveta University (TTU) in Voi/Kenya. As part of CEMEREM Project (Center of Excellence in Mining, Environmental Engineering and Resource Management) by TU Bergakademie Freiberg and HTW Dresden, I have been working as the Project Coordinator at TTU in Voi since November 2017.The commute from Voi to the TTU Campus is often adventurous. If the Matatu (local name for a mi-nibus) does not want to leave in the morning, as some of the seats are not full yet, then you have to improvise and take a Boda-Boda. A Boda-Boda is a motorbike taxi that quickly takes you to the main campus (765 metres above sea level), ten

kilometres away. Over time, traffic checkpoints can become a financial strain, so we often take handy short-cuts, making the commute a detour through the countryside. After a 20-minute trip, ample time for you to befriend the taxi driver, you arrive at the university gates (715 metres above sea level). The heat and humidity can make the last 50 metres of elevation tough going, even early in the morning. My first task as part of the CEMEREM Project was to put in place an or-ganisational structure with a local TTU Project Manager, and break the project down into sub-projects. The sub-project managers then develo-ped an implementation plan together with other employees in their department or faculty. This approach is based on the principle of project ownership. The sub-project managers see the importance of their role and identify with the su-perordinate targets of the project. These targets include promoting research and development, creating and implementing new degree pro-grammes and expanding the TTU network with economic and government institutions and other Kenyan universities. The journey home is generally rewarded with an impressive view of the Sagalla mountains and the city of Voi. The trip back to Voi in the Matatu also holds a few more surprises, like the actual num-ber of passengers a mini-bus can hold. Though Matatus (generally a Toyota or Isuzu) originally

have nine seats, Matatu drivers still don’t feel right unless there are at least a dozen passenger. Once the passengers convince the driver that he should leave with just the ten passengers, he turns up the music and we return to the city of Voi with a cheerful gospel song.Through the close contact with the TTU emplo-yees, we get to know the warm and extremely friendly Taita Taveta culture. Some TTU emplo-yees come from Taita Taveta County and some-times invite us to come hiking in the Taita Hills or for an after-work chai. That was my first pro-fessional experience in East Africa and I would recommend that everyone visit the country, either professionally or privately. However, you should remember the local motto: Vitu Vizuri Havitaki Haraka. That is Kiswahili and means: Good things come to those who wait.

The topical Alumni Interview: Daniel Falk

Daniel calls himself an occasional poet & lyri-cist, with a twinkle in his eye. However, his real passions are dinosaurs and sports. The qualified geologist has been a successful club swimmer for 19 years – and he has also represented TU Bergakademie Freiberg with honour several times. He trained the university swimming team, “SharkHunter”, for many years. Daniel recently completed an internship at the State Museum of Natural History Karlsruhe, and a doctoral scho-larship will probably soon take him to Ireland for some time.

You studied in Freiberg. What made you choose to study in Freiberg? My childhood dream has always been to be a di-nosaur researcher. During my final school exams, I did some research and decided to study geolo-gy, to get one step closer to my dream. I wanted to move away from my home to become more independent. A long phone call with Professor J. W. Schneider, when he talked passionately about his recently completed dig in France, ig-nited my fascination for geology and palaeon-tology at Bergakademie.

If you look back on your studies with your cur-rent knowledge: Is there something that you would do differently or what you would pay attention to?Looking back, I would like to have been more involved in the university committees (FSR, STU-RA etc.) and taken an ERASMUS semester in an English-speaking country. Of course, I also wish I was less shy around my fellow students.

What would you like to give the current students in Freiberg as a tip on the way?Make the most of the time, flexibility, fun and self-actualisation you have while at university. After you graduate, a lot of things are less flexible. No memory is clearer than the morning hangover at a 7.30 a.m. maths lecture after a night of partying with your best mate.

What makes your current job so attractive in your opinion? The diversity of natural sciences – far beyond the geosciences. Museum are full of surprises too...

Do you still have professional or private contacts to TU Bergakademie Freiberg?Quite a few. And probably for a long time. Friends, lecturers, university staff. That is where it pays in particular to be a university sports trainer. Especially because many who have left Freiberg stick together, even over long distances. That not only preserves friendships, it also builds a huge scientific network!

One last question: what is your motto for life?Nothing ventured, nothing gained! Without this motto, I wouldn’t have dared to do many things. There is no need to be embarrassed by (almost) anything. However, you should always think be-fore you act, as you don’t hatch your chicks by breaking the eggs but by sitting on them.

SHORT AND SWEET

My studiesFirst lecture 7:30 a.m. or 2 p.m.?07:30 a.m.Favourite canteen meal? Curry sausage with French fries. The portions were huge! (And often sold-out by 1 p.m. ...)Freiberger beer or Saxon wine?Freiberger, what else!?Dress code at university: Sports coat or sweat-shirt?Probably a sports coat, as I’m more likely to be found in a shirt than a t-shirt.

My universityMy quiet place: FriedeburgPlace I’ve never been to: AbsolomMy “good soul”: Konrad, my best mateMy no-go: BoredomMy favourite lecturer: Professor SchneiderMy most difficult test: General, inorganic and organic chemistry

Career fair ORTE

Under the heading “When I grow up, I want to be... on my way to the very top!”, roughly 35 regional, national and international companies will present themselves on 04 July 2018 from 10 a.m. - 4. p.m. in the

Ulrich-Rülein-von-Calw gym, to meet students.

We expect over 1,500 visitors to attend the event again this year. Besides application tips and career presentations, the day also features a comprehensive range of events to help you define and find your dream job and market yourself, which is equally interesting to visitors and companies.

Sometimes you don’t find your dream job until you transfer, take on a new task within a com-pany or take advanced training. At the ORTE careers fair, exhibitors promote the opportu-nities in their companies. This gives you the chance to fulfil your own career aspirations, either directly or via a detour.

A look back at the Graduate regulars‘ table

16 former students came together for the first Freiberg Graduate regulars‘ table in Dresden on 1 March from 7 p.m. in Kraftwerk Mitte. Our alumnus Dipl.-Kfm. Andreas Deicke organised the event. After graduating with a business de-gree (2009) from TU Bergakademie Freiberg, with a major in taxation and macroeconomy, Andreas Deicke specialised in online marke-ting. His desk is at Neonworx in Kraftwerk Mitte, Dresden, where he has good contacts with his colleagues in the co-working space. Andreas showed us around his workplace and told en-tertaining anecdotes from Freiberg and his care-er. His presentation focused on self-employment and startups. Franziska Böhler, a representative of TU Bergakademie Freiberg’s SAXEED Startup Network, was also in attendance to give expert advice. This gave the team members of our alum-ni company, Unimir GmbH, ideas for potential new workplaces. After a quick tour, which was highly impressive for its combination of industrial charm and functional new design, we finished the evening with a beer and relaxed conversations in the neighbouring restaurant. All attendees ag-reed: To be continued!
