While high technology offers revolutionary efficiencies for today's businesses, BCIT Dean of the School of Business Michael Harrison steadfast ly stands by the view that "high technology docs not a business make." Having high-tech products is not enough to drive a business to success, he says. Good management is needed to do that.

This is one of the reasons why the School of Business plans to introduce Advanced Studies in Business in the fall of 1990. The program is currently in the developmental stages and courses are planned for both full and part-time studies.

Until now, BCIThas offered a Diploma in Business and a double Diploma (for people who originally specialized in other technologies and then want to move into business administration). However, with the Institute's new mandate emphasizing "a focus on those initiatives that increase the level of entrepreneurial activity within the province", the School of Business has devised a modular approach to its programs that will not only offer a higher level of training, but leave the student with more options after graduation.

The new approach involves a "road map" of avenues which a student can follow to reach his or her particular career goals, according to Harrison.

'The road map means there are a number of "exit ramps" which a student can take to go on to various destinations, like an Advanced Diploma and a Bachelor of Administration at a B.C. university," says Harrison. "And once a person has a bachelor's degree, the world of graduate studies opens up."

Harrison observes that it is increasingly expected that business professionals gain a university degree. To address this need, BCIT has recently reached agreement with the Open

Learning Agency (OLA) to include a degree on the School of Business "road map". The Advanced Diploma will qualify the graduate tocontinueworkingtowarda B A . inAdmin-istrative Studies through Open University.

Harrison expects this "degree-oriented" course of study will produce a well-rounded professional who has flourished under what he calls "a continuously intermittent education" - periods of study alternated with periods of work.

A Diploma of Technology, he explains, yields a "job-ready" graduate qualified to enter the workplace. After gaining valuable experience, he or she can then choose to return to BCIT full or part-time for the second module, leading to the Advanced Diploma. After another period of work, the student can complete the OLA courses leading to a Bachelor degree in Administration.

According to Harrison, the Advanced Studies program is ideal for the majority of business students, most of whom come to BCIT after years of ecperience in the workforce (Only one in eight students comes to the Business School directly from highschool.) For these people, the nine-month Advanced Studies program, will be both an opportunity and a challenge through part-time or full-time studies.

Lab. A team of representatives from every department in ttie Business and other BCIT Schools, is currently working to design a lab that will be equipped with the latest technology-

The new lab will simulate the "nerve centre" of a large corporation, where different corporate activities can be presented

using the latest in high-tech presentation technology. Computers, visual and sound media will work together to offer a multi-disciplinary overview of a corporation's initiatives.

"We hope students will learn to prepare and present information in its most effective form and to integrate all aspects of a firm's functions - marketing, human resources, financial and strategic planning," explains Har-riiion.

Mailing list "not for sale"

Sorry, it's not for sale. TTiat's how the Alumni office responds to

firms wanting to purchase the alumni mailing list.'The list is definitely not forsale.lt isused only for programs endorsed tiy Alumni Council. Even then the list is not given out to commercial participants in those programs. Rather, mailing labels go directly to a mailing house, which affixes them to the program mailings.

Confidentiality extends beyond commercial ventures as well. The Office will not give out the addresses or telephone numbers of graduates to anyone outside the Institute unless we have prior permission.

However, we're always willing to help classmates regain contact and will gladly forward mail to graduates for whom we have good addresses. If you would like lo have some correspondence forwarded, provide it to the Alumni Office in a stamped envelope and let us know the graduate's name, year of graduation and program, if possible. We will add the address and .send the letter promptly on its way.

The office works hard to keep the alumni mailing list as accurate as possible. You can help by informing us of any revisions to your home or business addresses or changes to your marital status. And if you know of any graduates who arc not receiving their alumni mailings, please encourage them to bring their record up to date. Otherwise they might miss important information about class reunions, others activities, or the many benefits available to BCIT alumni.

Powell Interview cont'd from page 1

filled since last spring, but it's not essential for the job, he stresses "I have an advantage because I know the campus, I know what goes on in the classrooms. I also have an empathy for BCIT students, because I know how hard they have to work. But my life as a BCIT students was a long time ago, and I've done a lot of other thingssince that help me as Board Chairman."

Currently vice-president of London Drugs, in charge of the Marketing division and the Retail/Technical group, Powell has held senior positions with Kerrisdale Cameras, Lens & Shutter, and other businesses. He has also received his Certified general Accountant's designation from the C G A Association of B.C.

The role of BCIT within the education system in B.C. is very clear to Powell, just as it was when he was a student. BCIT was then, and is now, a place for goal-oriented, success-driven people who are looking for job-ready training, and who are prepared to make a supreme sacrifice in time and effort to get it.

"I came to BCIT after a year of Arts at UBC because I wanted to be learning business; I didn't want to be learning arts. I wanted to be my own boss, to run my own business."

The Institute was only two years old at the time, but it had a reputation for having the best instructors who were current with industry, and the best equipment.

"We've had some tough years, but since I've been on the Board (Powell was appointed by the provincial government in 1987) I've been encouraged that the level of capital funding has been restored recently." Although high on his list of priorities as Chairman, increased funding for BCIT is, he insists, "a process, not a goal". "Our job as a Board is to position BCIT for the future as a centre for advanced technological training in B.C." (icuingbcltcr funding will help with that job, but so will the Board's other priorities such as guidance with the Institute's strategic plan and bringing up to standard those areas at BCIT that have been neglected in recent years. Powell cites the major renovations to the microcomputer labs last year as an example of specific improvements that will help to position BCIT.

Although being Chairman of the Board takes up much of Powell's time and energy, he's happy to be involved with the Institute. "I have a lot of respect forthe training BCIT gives, and the instructors, and I'm grateful for what BCITgaveto mcwhen Iwasastudent."

Campus Centre now part of new Campus

Master Plan By Lorne Hildebrand

Exciting news for the Student Association's Campus Centre was annouccd at BCITs Board of Governors meeting when campus planners architectural firm Hotson Baker revealed the campus Master Plan.

The Master Plan is a blueprint for development at BCIT for the next iwcniy years and prepares the campus for the possibility of a projected enrollemcnt at the thirty thousand FTE level.

Well received by the entire BCIT community, the Tower group and Ihe Student Association both see the suggested move of ihe Campus Centre to a site in the geographic centre of the campus, (beside the main cafeteria) as a very positive step.

The Master Plan suggests a revamp of the entire campus wilh all new roads and pedestrian paths leading to the Campus Center Re-designed to include the cafeteria, the Campus Centre becomes twice the building, with a much greater prominence.

The really good news is that the admini-strationacceptsasthc first priorily,lhebuild-ing of the cafeteria/campus ccnire. In fact President Watson asked for a large sum of money to be allocated to the Campus Centre project in this year's budget, and has suggested that the government will look very favourably on the request.

Presentations have been made to all campus groups and to some ministry officials, and construction may begin as early as this summer.
