**Rosanna to exit stage**
DAVID LLOYD SPEAKS
• Good evening.
• Many of you this year mourned with us the loss of a
great man. The Honourable Doctor Basil Hetzel AC
DUniv was one of this state’s greatest contributors to
public health and to its intellectual life.
• Among the many wonderful contributions he made, Dr
Hetzel, Basil - or Old White as many knew him - was
Chancellor of the University of South Australia from
1992 when we were very young and fledgling, until he
retired in 1998.
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
9 | P a g e
• He was a key supporter of our Bob Hawke Prime
Ministerial Centre at UniSA and was its chair from 1998
to 2007.
• He remained a patron of the Hawke until he passed away
earlier this year.
• Basil Hetzel was a passionate advocate for education and
during his lifetime he generously donated over $100,000
to the university.
• In his name and in his memory, we have created a new
recognition group for our donors. Those who contribute
$100,000 or more to UniSA are, from this evening, to
become members of the Hetzel Group,
• and tonight we acknowledge the extraordinary
contributions made by the following people:
• Wolf Blass AM DUniv is renowned for his 60-year
career in wine production, transforming a modest
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy

landholding in South Australia into what is now Wolf
Blass Wines, one of the most successful and awarded
wineries in Australia;
o Wolf is Chairman of the Wolf Blass Foundation
which, in 2014, pledged $350,000 to UniSA;
o his gift has established a 10-year program of
research scholarships, focused on Masters by
Research Students in Wine Marketing and
Innovation.
(Present pin and certificate to Mr Blass)
• Few people have made a more generous contribution to
our University than Bob and Gayle Cowan through the
Cowan Grant Trust;
o The Trust was established in 1994 by the late
Marnie Cowan and her son Bob;
o Marnie and her husband Bill were great believers in
the benefits of tertiary education,
o and the great work of the Cowan Trust to provide
financial support to students continues with Bob and
Gayle.
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
11 | P a g e
o To date their gifts to UniSA have totalled $417,000
and the impact that funding has had on students –
particularly those from rural and regional
backgrounds – is incalculable.
(Present pins to Bob and Gayle Cowan and one certificate for
both).
• In 1999 Associate Professor Margaret Davy AM
established a special scholarship at UniSA with a gift of
$130,000.
o In honour of her aunt and uncle, the Irene and David
Davy Scholarship for the Advancement of
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Education
continues to be awarded annually;
o The scholarship is valued at $5000 and is allocated
to an undergraduate student based on their academic
merit as well as evidence of their service to the
community;
o So far, there have been 30 recipients – their names
are proudly displayed on an honour board at our
City West campus,
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
12 | P a g e
o and Margaret continues to take a great interest in
each one of them,
o many of whom have gone on to act as role models
and mentors for other Aboriginal students.
(Present pin and certificate to Associate Professor Davy)
• Dr Ian Gould AM DUniv and his wife Christine have
been great supporters of the University.
o Ian served as our Chancellor from 2008 until 2015;
o He very wisely hired me in 2012;
o as a geologist he has had more than 40 years’
experience in senior positions within the minerals
industry;
o was awarded an Honorary Doctorate from UniSA
this year;
o Ian and Christine have collectively donated more
than $125,000 to date.
o Their gift supports Honours and PhD students with
the Ian Gould Experimental Science Grant which

encourages experimentation and analysis in
scientific endeavours;
o they have also made a generous contribution to
establish the Gould Interactive Gallery, a venue
within our Museum of Discovery in the new Health
Innovation Building.
(Present pins to Ian and Christine Gould and one certificate
for both).
• The generosity demonstrated by the Pearce family to our
University is nothing short of remarkable. Tom Pearce
and his wife, the late Jean Pearce OAM wanted to
make sure that young rural students had the support they
needed to attend university;
o During her lifetime Jean made a $500,000 gift, in
memory of her brother, to establish the Don Hawke
Memorial Scholarship;
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
14 | P a g e
o It is the largest and most prestigious undergraduate
scholarship awarded at UniSA;
o In addition Tom and Jean made significant
donations to the Library and to establish a range of
Pearce Family Grants;
o Tom continues to support these and the Pearce
family’s contribution to the University now totals
almost $800,000.
(Present pin and certificate to Tom Pearce)
• Emeritus Professor Kym Adey AM has had a long and
distinguished career in higher education in Australia and
overseas.
o He was Dean of the Salisbury campus of the former
South Australian College of Advanced Education;
o is a former Pro Vice Chancellor and Vice President
of UniSA and also served as foundation dean of
Education in 1992;
o Kym served four terms as President of the
Australian Council of Deans of Education, during
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
15 | P a g e
which he chaired two national reviews of Teacher
Education;
o In 2011 he initiated the Kym Adey Catherine House
– University of South Australia Scholarship through
his unique artistic talents;
o sales of his limited edition series of sculptures,
together with other support, have netted nearly
$200,000;
o funds which have been used to support a vital
annual scholarship valued at $10,000 that enables
women from Catherine House - which provides
supported accommodation, education and
emergency housing to homeless women - to study at
UniSA.
(Present pin and certificate to Emeritus Professor Kym Adey)
• There are, added to this group, tonight, additional donors
who prefer to remain anonymous but we still would like
to express our gratitude to each donor for their
philanthropic support.
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
16 | P a g e
• Oh, we have one more member of the Hetzel group to
induct. How could I have missed this one:
JIM JOINS DAVID ON STAGE
• DAVID: Jim McDowell began as Chancellor of UniSA
on January 1st 2016;
o Educated as a lawyer, he had – and still has - a
significant career in the defence, aerospace and
technology sectors;
o first became associated with UniSA in 2007 as a
member of Council and was particularly involved in
the established of the UniSA Law School,
o (- just ranked amongst the world’s top 100 law
schools (and the best in South Australia) in case you
hadn’t heard -;)
o donated his Council fees throughout his time on
Council, used to establish the Joshua McDowell
First Year Law Grant;
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
17 | P a g e
o re-joined the University in 2016 as Chancellor and
donated $102,500 to support our 25th Birthday
Scholarship fund and continues to fund the Joshua
McDowell Law Grant;
o also pledged to donate his Council fees for the next
three years which will total $165,000 (in additional
funding).
DAVID PRESENTS CERTIFICATE TO JIM.
(JOKE IF APPROPRIATE)
• Now we have matching pins and certificates to go with
our matching – and very fetching – Graduation gowns.
• JIM: David joined UniSA as Vice Chancellor and President in 2012;
o a passionate advocate for education and the sciences, David has
contributed over $150,000 in donations to UniSA;
o the funds have primarily supported scholarships for high achieving
females who are pursuing their education in science, technology,
engineering or mathematics.

8.15pm Ladies and gentlemen, it is now time to continue the formalities for this evening. But before we do, can we just acknowledge how wonderful the band is tonight? All the way from the James Morrison Academy in Mount Gambier, Laura, Scott and James have travelled a long way to serenade us tonight. Before we begin, please turn your attention to the screens behind me and take a look at the impact that our alumni have made around the world.
8.16pm
Video: Alumni Overview (3 mins)
8.19pm I’d now like to invite Mr Jim McDowell, Chancellor of the University of South Australia to the stage to say a few words.
JIM SPEAKS
• Good evening and welcome to Brookman Hall.
• When Lieutenant Governor Sir Samuel Way opened this building in 1903
he stressed in his speech that the education provided by the then School
of Mines and Industries was crucial to South Australia’s economic future.
• Having stood for 114 years as part of an education that is still crucial to
the economic health of the South Australian government, and surrounded
by the alumni who have contributed so mightily to that health, tonight
will be our last official function in Brookman Hall.
• Next year the Alumni Awards will move to Pridham Hall which will
provide a fitting backdrop for Australia’s University of Enterprise, a
young, courageous, innovative and entrepreneurial university.
• It will also have better air conditioning.
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
19 | P a g e
• Pridham Hall, as many of you would know, was named for another
alumnus in whom we take great pride – Andrew Pridham – who very
generously gave us a $5 million cheque to put towards the building.
• Many thousands of our alumni have also added their support and the
building, which seems to grow more complete every day, will open next
year.
• Tonight is a night for celebration, for being successful alumni, for being
generous friends and supporters.
• Tonight is the third annual Alumni Awards ceremony and later you’ll get
to meet four new members of our alumni family who have made all of us
very proud.
• Thank you for joining us and enjoy the rest of your evening.
8.22pm Thank you Chancellor.
And now please welcome to the stage again, Professor David Lloyd Vice Chancellor and President of the University of South Australia who will deliver his address.
DAVID SPEAKS
• Thank you Rosanna and welcome everyone to what is
my favourite night of the University’s year.
• As Jim mentioned, tonight is our third Alumni Awards
and each year we find extraordinary people who have
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
20 | P a g e
taken their education from UniSA, or our antecedent
institutions, and used it to great purpose.
• Each and every one of our graduates are part of an
internationally educated, globally capable society.
• But the people we celebrate at the Alumni Awards are
those who go that little bit further, those who, through
their education, make a tangible difference in the world
around them.
• Every year without fail we graduate almost 8,000
innovative and vibrant global professionals.
• Their education gives them citizenship in a changing
world.
• And while there are many benefits, like personal success
and fulfilment they know that education also carries
responsibilities in a progressive society.
• The responsibility to do what is right.
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
21 | P a g e
• The responsibility to lend a hand when someone needs it.
• To change that which needs changing.
• To make a difference.
• They become the role models for future generations of
students who see their success and want something like it
for themselves.
• The people we honour tonight are not just successful.
• They have made a difference
o to their families;
o to their neighbourhood;
o to their nation; and
o to the world beyond.
• They are leaders focused on creating spaces for others to
occupy.
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
22 | P a g e
• I think the four people you will meet tonight will inspire
you and delight you.
• They come from completely different backgrounds but
each share a common core value: to help others,
• to help their communities in humanitarian ways, to help
educate those with limited access to education and to
serve the communities from which they came.
• To give back.
• We will learn more of our awardees in the course of the
evening;
• They are four people from more than 200,000 alumni of
UniSA, living in more than 130 countries across the
globe;
Alumni Awards dinner – VC’s copy
23 | P a g e
• The reach and impact of one institution, 26 years young
as a university and already in the top ten in the nation,
cannot be overstated;
• The power of our network to bring about positive change
is unimaginable;
• It starts with giving back;
• It grows through inspiring others;
• Ladies and gentlemen, I hope you are inspired this
evening and that you enjoy the festivities ahead;
• Thank you.
8.29pm Thank you Vice Chancellor. If you don't mind, I’ll ask you to stay up on stage here
with me.
Now tonight is about recognising the incredible contributions our alumni have
made across the globe.
The Alumni Awards were established to celebrate our alumni who have used
their education, their passion and wisdom to make a difference both locally and
around the world.
In its third year, we are proud to present 2017’s four Alumni Award recipients.
