I know it is for me. Ill explain why it should be for you too. At our January GWAA Board meeting, your loyal board members made the decision to make a sizable donation directly to the American Red Cross and to specifically earmark our donation to go to the Haiti Earth Quake Relief fund. This donation was made on behalf of “all of us” GW folks. We usually do some kind of community service work at Thanksgiving time, but had not done so last year. This seemed to all of us to be “just what we had waited for”. We hope you feel that way too. I checked with the Red Cross and was assured that at least 91% of the donation gets to the people there. I also made sure that I took the check to our good old town Red Cross chapter on North Alfred Street. The photo shows me turning the check over to the Asst. Dir. And the beat goes on… the next day, at the Fredericksburg Golden Friends Lunch Bunch I took the last 4 GW baseball caps I had and asked for a “donation” of $20 per hat, with the entire proceeds going to the same cause. The four caps sold immediately! Not only that - 4 other people just came up afterwards and gave me a donation - No Cap Needed. What a great group. I collected $130 in that 5 minute period. “Bad part about it… “I didnt take names… but you know who you are... Thank you all so much. I then turned that $130 into $350 with a little more “help from my friend” and then donated it through my old place of employment to the same Red Cross Haiti fund. Now, here’s the “good part”. The place I used to work for “matched” all employee donations for Haiti, so that $350 turned into $700! Again, thank all of you for your kindness to other people in other countries… Its what makes us the greatest country in the world. God Bless America and ON GW! by John H. Hyman - ‘53 David L. An alumni committee made-up of several members (3) of the GWAA Board is currently developing and evaluating ideas in orderto establish a meaningful GWHS Legacy Project. One of our mission goals is to create an end-product that will educate present and recapture for prior Alexandria residents, those 37 years when GWHS was a proud focal point of the city. In achieving this goal we are also working closely on this withseveral members from the Alexandria City School Board.Progress reports indicating our identification, selection and the development of a suitable worthwhile undertaking will beoffered in future issues of the newsletter, as well as at alumni meetings, luncheons and functions. The eventual success, acceptance and public edification of this endeavor will depend heavily upon the moral and financialsupport of the entire membership. After we ultimately define the exact form of the project, we will be asking for your gener-ous donations to supplement our associations’ investment. In conjunction with some plans we are evaluating, the board welcomes those who have skills in architectural design to contactDick Crompton (703-361-7640).

I am sorry to reporeport the death of Edgart the death of Edgar Simms, Class of ‘45. Ed was a member of the 1945 State Championshipbasketball team from GW. He lettered in football, baseball, basketball, and track; a rare accomplishmentletter man while attending our school. He lettered in football, baseball, basketball, and track; a rare accomplishmentindeed! I can remember only a small number of athletes who reached that category during the history of GW.Ed Simms was a successful business man, living in College Park, MD at the time of his death. He passed away aftera long illness. His father was a long time member of the Alexandria Police Department. Edgar Simms, Sr., becameChief of Police prior to his retirement.I was talking with Dave Rice recently. Dave lives in Ft Pierce, FL. He was Captain of the famous ’45 championshipteam. Dave informs me that he had the pleasure of coaching both Peyton and Eli Manning, while they were attendingNewman High School in New Orleans, LA.Dave and I were reminiscing about the “stinking” tennis shoes, or gym shoes, that Ed Simms used to wear when heplayed. When he put the shoes in his locker, you could smell them all over the locker room. After we won the statetitle, we gave credit to those “stinky” shoes that Ed wore.I received a letter from Harley “Skeeter” Swift and he informs me that he will enter the Tennessee Hall of Fame onFebruary 18, 2010. “Skeets” will be recognized by a Joint Session of the Tennessee Legislature on the floor of theCapitol. On February 19, 2010, he was inducted into the Hall of Fame in Nashville, Tennessee. What an honor!Everybody knows what “Skeets” did for GWHS. He and yours truly were inducted into Alexandria Hall of Fame at aceremony held at the Old Dominion Boat Club a few years ago. I had the pleasure of coaching him during his adoles-cent years. There’s one word that I could describe him, and that was “Fireball”. He would light up when his team-mates would not perform well. Harley has been fighting cancer lately and he needs all the support he can muster.Look out Tennessee – here comes that “fireball” from Alexandria, VA. Tennessee will never be the same again.I watch sports events where trainees and water boys constantly feed water and sports drinks to the players during thegame. We never had water for our baseball and basketball games. A bucket of water with one dipper was all we hadfor football games. Everyone used the same dipper. Water would not last through the first quarter and no refills. Doyou think that these guys and gals could make it without bottled water or Gatorade? Both drinks were not availablein our days.

Moore provides law and order for MLBPMoore provides law and order for MLBPMoore provides law and order for MLBP AlumniAlumniAlumniAttorney has been involved with Alumni Association for more than 25 years

By Bruce Markusen / Special to MLB.com Jan. 2008 (REPRINTED with PERMISSION)

Sam MooreSam MooreSam Moore has never swung a bat or thrown a fastball in a Major League game, but he’s become anindispensable source of wisdom for almost every retired player. Since the inception of the Major LeagueBaseball Players Alumni Association 25 years ago, Moore has provided invaluable legal advice as theorganization’s general counsel.

“It’s interesting how I got started with the Alumni,” says the easygoing Moore from his law office in Washing-ton, D.C. “It began with an ex-ballplayer named Don Loun, who used to pitch for the Senators. I was represent-ing him on a completely different matter. He then asked me if I would help establish an alumni association forex-ballplayers.”Moore assumed that Loun’s intent was to do something on a small scale for former players residing in the area.

“It seemed like a local thing for players who lived in Baltimore and Washington,” explains Moore, who lives innearby Annandale, Va., with his wife Donna. “I’m a big fan of the game; I was delighted to assist. I had no idea

that it would become a national organization.”With Loun having established the initial contact, Moore would soon meet two other retired players, one a pitcher and the other an infielder-outfielder, but both with baseball roots in Washington.

“Don put Jim Hannan and Chuck Hinton in touch with me. One evening in 1981, they came to my office and told me what they wanted to do.I had experience with tax-exempt organizations, so it was a good fit. Really, the Alumni Association was Chuck Hinton’s idea; it was his plan.He spoke to Jim and Fred Valentine [another former Senator]. The seed was planted.”

In addition to Hinton, Hannan, Valentine, and Loun, 10 other players became involved with the start-up of the Association. Moore refers tothem as the founding members. “There was Rex Barney, the former Oriole PA announcer, who is now deceased. Dick Bosman, the Senatorspitcher, and Tom Brown, who also played in the NFL for the Packers. There was also Joe Durham, Ron Hansen, Billy Hunter, and FrankKreutzer. Jim Lemon, the former player and manager, who is now deceased. And also Walter Masterson and Brooks Robinson.”

Although the 14 founders were determined to launch the organization, they had to overcome early difficulties — including the lack of basicnecessities.

“We didn’t have any money to do anything with,” Moore says bluntly but without bitterness. “I remember early on we had to rent a hotel roomjust to have a meeting in. So Jim Hannan prevailed upon the Commissioner the needs we had. The Commissioner gave us $30,000 as seedmoney. That was Bowie Kuhn who did that.”

With some desperately needed funding in place, the 14 founding fathers set about the task of defining their organization and what it wasattempting to accomplish. Moore and the retired players came up with four primary goals for the Alumni Association.“We wanted to promote baseball, re-involve players in the community, raise money for worthy charities, and develop programs for formerplayers.”

The latter goal produced two major programs: the Alumni marketing group in 1988 and the service corporation in 1991.

“The alumni marketing group tries to make as much money as possible for former players and the Alumni Association,” explained Moore.“That helps the Association do things like putting on youth clinics. And the service corporation addresses pension and insurance issues forretired players.”

There have been other accomplishments along the way. In 1984, the Alumni Association gained 501(3c) tax-exempt status, capping off alaborious, three-year process. In 1997, the Alumni struck a licensing agreement with Major League Baseball allowing them to use MLB’sname and logo in conjunction with the Association.

Through his day-to-day involvement with the Alumni Association over the past quarter century, Moore has come to know scores of formerplayers. He has become especially close to several alumni who have been particularly active with the group.“Jim Hannan is a terrific man, filled with intriguing ideas. He lives and breathes the Alumni, 24 hours a day, seven days a week.”

One of the game’s most durable pitchers of the sixties, seventies, and early eighties provided an early lift to Moore and the AlumniAssociation.

“Jim Kaat has been a tremendous contributor. He helped us when we were a fledgling organization. He had just retired as a player at the time.He really helped straighten us out. He’s very sharp, with a good business acumen.”

Lesser known players have also become trusted confidantes of Moore over the years.

“Jerry Moses, the former catcher with Boston and Cleveland, ran a tight ship for us early on. He did a lot of good work with the pension plan.Ken Sanders, the pitcher out of Milwaukee, has done a lot for us, running some very profitable golf tournaments. [Former Major Leagueoutfielder] Carl Warwick has provided real leadership and become a close friend. Then there’s Fred Valentine, who’s as faithful andhardworking as anyone I’ve ever met.

FFFAMILAMILAMILYYY WORDSWORDSWORDS REGARDING SAMUELREGARDING SAMUELREGARDING SAMUEL N. MOORE N. MOOREN. MOORE (GW-’46) - By John Hyman (GW ‘54)1945 was a significant year for America in that World War II had finally come to an end. It was also a significant yearfor the Moore/Hyman families. At the beginning of 1945, my mother, father and I lived in a small town in NorthCarolina, the same town in which “Sammie” Moore had been born some years earlier. Sam’s mother and my motherwere sisters. During that same time, the Moore family had relocated to Alexandria, settling into a modest rentedhouse on Randolph Avenue in the Del Ray section. Sam, Sam’s mother, father and two younger brothers made up theMoore family. In March, 1945, my father passed away in North Carolina. Only two months later, Sam’s father passedaway. That left, of the two families, two mothers and four boys with no real means of a family income since all the boyswere still in school. Accordingly, our two mothers concluded that we should join forces, and Alexandria was certainlymore prosperous than a farming community in North Carolina. So my mother and I moved in with the Moore’s in Juneof 1945. Naturally, the question and source of income was a big issue for the now enlarged family.

As his first step towards becoming both a father figure and the man of the household, Sam voluntarily withdrew from George WashingtonHigh School for one year, and found work which provided some small amount of income for the family. Meantime, my mother gainedemployment and the rest of us boys found paper routes and raised money in any way possible. Sam’s mother stayed at home, taking careof all the needs of a family of six. Our mothers made sure that we all attended and participated in activities of the Del Ray Baptist Churchwhere Sam was to become one of the youngest deacons to ever serve the church. As years passed, Sam became a mainstay of thechurch while serving in virtually every possible lay position.

When Sam returned to GWHS, he played varsity baseball and was also a member of the cross-country team. In addition, he became quiteactive in the Drama Department, playing the parts of several different leading men. He ultimately graduated as class valedictorian. Healso formed a basketball team: the Del Ray Stallions. They competed in the city “A” league, ultimately winning the city-wide “A” leaguechampionship.

Following graduation from GWHS, Sam married his high school sweetheart, Donna Stewart. Thereafter, they spent approximately twoyears in Germany while Sam was serving in the army.

During the mid 1950’s, he attended American University and the Washington College of Law, where he received both his bachelor’sdegree and law degree. He continues to practice law to this very day.

Moore has developed a particularly intriguing relationship with Bob Miller, the former Tigers, Reds and Mets left-hander who later became theAssociation’s chairman of the board.

“Bob has played several tricks on me,” Moore recalls with a laugh. “One time I was supposed to meet with him in Tampa. I was at Dulles Airportheading to my flight when I heard an announcement that said, ‘Sam “Mercury” Moore, please report to the Red Carpet Room.’ I didn’t think itwas for me; I thought it was for another Sam Moore. So then this airline attendant flagged me down, brought me to the Red Carpet Room, and said,‘Welcome aboard.’ She sat me down and proceeded to serve me a wonderful breakfast — a champagne breakfast. I still thought it was a mistake.About halfway through breakfast, I heard someone laughing. I looked up and there was Bob Miller. He had planned the whole thing. Not only didhe give me a champagne breakfast, but he bumped my flight up to first class. Bob was also the one who gave me the nickname, Mercury. Some ofthe players still call me that.”

Given his pleasant, personable manner, it’s not surprising that Moore has become popular with retired players like Miller. Similarly, Moorehasn’t been disillusioned by any encounters he’s had with former players, some of whom he idolized as a fan of the old Washington Senators inthe 1930s and forties.

“It’s been most rewarding. I haven’t met anybody, not a single player, who’s disappointed me.”

On occasion, Moore’s standing as lifelong baseball fan has created some anxiety in meeting a former player for the first time.

“When I first met Brooks Robinson, I was pretty nervous. But he put me at ease right away. He has a knack for doing that. Ever since then, I haven’tbeen nervous. Oh, I still have a lot of respect for what they’ve done, but I feel comfortable with them.”For an attorney with no previous formal attachment to the game, working with the Alumni Association has driven his career for nearly threedecades.“I had no idea when I met with Hannan and Hinton that it would be such a life-changing experience. I had no idea that it would consume so muchof my legal practice. It’s been a pleasure and a joy.”

Even with the Alumni Association on far more solid ground than it was during its formative years, Moore remains active.

“I’m involved every bit as much, probably more so than ever. But I have cut back on the hours a bit. When we were struggling, we used to meetregularly from 5 p.m. on Friday until Sunday at noon. I lived through that once. I don’t know if I would want to do that again!”

Though pleased with the progress the Association has made during its first 25 years of existence, Moore says the most promising days have yet tocome.

“The future is bright. I think the Alumni Association will get bigger and stronger each year. The possibilities are unlimited. The marketingcompany we have is on the verge of a breakthrough. And the Internet will be a huge key to the Alumni’s success.”

Hi, GW gang... I had a very nice phone call today from someone who is evidently caring for John Pierpoint of the class of ’46. She asked that any ofyou who know John... (or even if you don’t) could possibly communicate with him. He would very much appreciate an email or two.I reproduce below the email I received from his caregiver. If you find time, please drop him a line. I’m sure he would be elated to hear from someclassmates. And please pass this on to others who might know John.

Dear GW classmates and friends…:I am writing this email message for Mr. John D. Pierpoint. Apparently he is interested to have his school colleaguescontacting him. Would be possible for GWAA Alumni to send a message to the subscribers of GWAA to contact John viaemail? “ He says that “Parkinson’s has got him down”. Mr. Beach, any question that may needed in regarding this email, please contact Lenir Richardson, at [email protected].

Thanks in advance for your consideration, GWAA

“STRANGER ON THE SHORE”

As I walked along the beach on a cold and windy day,In the distance was a stranger; he was coming my way.In the early morning light as best as I could see,He looked ghostly pale, the closer he came to me.His clothes were worn and tattered,For the years had taken their toll.He had the features of a manWho had lost his very soul.He asked me where he could find happiness.Where could he look; where could he go?To this question I had no answer. For the answer I did not know.He said he once was told,And now he knew it to be true,Love and happiness you must give,Before it can come to you.His eyes became misty as he turned to go.I tried to speak, but I could not do so.For I was filled with remorseFor the things in days gone by,Things known only to meAnd this lonely passerby. As I watched him walk awayDown the shore by the sea,This vision was no stranger,For the stranger was me.

BIO of James (Jim) Dooley - ’67I appreciate the opportunity to run for a board position on the GW Alumni Association and the chance to work with others on the board and committee memberswho have given of their time and skills to keep the association, planned activities, and GW spirit alive.

When people ask me about growing up in Del Ray and attending GW High School, my immediate response is that growing up in Alexandria was truly fun, and I notethe life long friendships that started at GW and even Mt. Vernon Elementary that continue to this day. I’m proud to say that I graduated from GW. And its thatfun experience, pride, and many friendships that bonds us together and makes the GWAA the wonderful organization it is. If elected to the board, I would strive tokeep the GWAA strong and work to preserve the history and tradition associated with GW High School.

I grew up in Alexandria and have remained in Northern Virginia my entire life. After high school I went to work for the Fairfax County Police Dept and retiredafter 25 years of service. I then went to work for the Virginia State Bar and retired from that job with 14 years of service, and at present I continue to work forNavy Federal Credit Union. I have been married for the past 35 years, have 3 grown children, and continue to live in Burke. I have never severed my ties toAlexandria. In addition to being a member of the GWAA, I am a member of the Old Dominion Boat Club, the Alexandria Sportsmans Club, and still make it in toAl’s on Mt. Vernon Ave for a steak & cheese at least once a month. Again, I would appreciate your support and welcome the opportunity to serve and represent you as a board member of the GWAA. On GW!

GWAA Board Vacancies:All eligible GWAA members are encouraged to consider joining this organization, especially the Classes ofthe 60s and 70s. The success of the Association depends on the continued participation of its members andcontributing your time and talent can be very rewarding. Please send your name to, Nominating/ElectionChairperson - Jane COLEMAN Foster ’67, either by phone at (703) 971-3157 or e-mail [email protected].
