CURRENT MEMBERSPROGRESS HIGHLIGHTS

In December 2017, ASI launched a comprehensive certification program designedfor the aluminium value chain, covering both sustainability performance and chain of custody. This was the culmination of almost 3 years work as an incorporated entity, in turn building onthe formative work of key stakeholders in preceding years.

April 2018 saw ASI issue the first certifications against its new ASI Performance Standard, an exciting milestone that demonstrates the commitment and momentum of ASI’s founding members. We anticipate ASI certifications to continue to be issued in the coming months, as members work to apply the Standards in their operations. Continued uptake of the ASI certification program is key to building a credible and value-adding initiative for all stakeholders.

ASI has developed a number of tools to support its roll-out. ASI’s online assurance platform, elementAl, provides both members and auditors with user-oriented interfaces and workflow support for the certification process. ASI’s new learning program, educationAl, is building a comprehensive program of online sessions and in-person experiences that cover a wide range of topics relevant to ASI implementation for members and auditors.

The pool of ASI Accredited Auditors continues to grow and we welcome interest from eligible firms who apply to carry out the independent, third-party audits against ASI Standards. And we continue to engage with stakeholders on how we can improve our effectiveness as an organisation, and work together to create positive impacts in and around the metals sector.

ASI GOVERNANCE

ASI is a non-profit, membership-based organisation and registered charity, with values of engagement, participation and consensus building. It is governed by a Board of 8 Directors, comprised of 6 elected representatives from Production and Transformation, Industrial Users and Civil Society members, plus 2 Independent Directors.

The ASI Standards Committee is focused on the standards, assurance and impacts programs, and is comprised of 24 member and stakeholder representatives, half from industry and half from non-industry perspectives. ASI has also convened a standing Indigenous Peoples Advisory Forum, which liaises with both the Standards Committee and Board on matters relevant to Indigenous peoples.

Thematic Working Groups give the opportunity for further engagement for members and stakeholders on ongoing topics for standards and implementation, such as biodiversity and ecosystem services, human rights, greenhouse gas emissions, material stewardship and recycling, and benchmarking and harmonisation.
