Product range summary

MANNUS offers a wide range of flagpole designs, manufactured in a choice of materials, including aluminium (EN AW 6005 A), stainless steel (1.4301) and glass fibre reinforced plastic (GRP). Aluminium offers a high static load capacity combined with low weight, and the material is also recyc- lable and therefore environmentally friendly. Aluminium flagpoles are supplied in an ano-dized finish which minimises dirt retention and guarantees lasting corrosion protection, increasing the service life of the flagpole.

Aluminium flagpoles can also be powder coated in any RAL colour at additional cost. Stainless steel flagpoles are supplied in a polished finish and offer superior static load capacity combined with high quality appea-rance, making them equally suitable for tradi-tional and contemporary surroandings. GRP is a lightweight material which meets the structural requirements necessary for flagpo-les. The standard colour for GRP flagpoles is white, and any other RAL colour is available on request and at extra cost.

The flagpole height above ground is the height in metres from the base to the pole top. If the flagpole is installed using a tubular ground fixing, the actual supplied length is 700mm longer than the installed height; for tilting ground fixings, the supplied height will be equal to the actual height. MANNUS flagpoles are available up to maximum height of 18 metres above ground. The diameter of a flagpole and the choice of pole section have a decisive influence on static load capacity (see in this regard also page 12). The struc-

tural performance of a flagpole is directly proportional to the square of the pole diameter: diameter is therefore an impor- tant consideration in product selection. In order to hoist the flag easily, a hoisting system is necessary which consists of a hoist system with pole fittings and rolls. Internal hoisting devices have a hoist guide in the flagpole or profile which all but eliminates the beating of the hoists in the wind and offers very good anti-theft protection. With external hoisting systems,

the halyard is external to the flagpole. For additional convenience we also offer some flagpole designs with an internal hoisting system operated by a winding handle. Should the message on the flag (especially advertising flags) need to be readable under conditions of little or no wind conditions, a flagpole design with a boom is recommended. Here „continuous flying“ of the flag is guaranteed due to a boom in the upper seam of the flag. The MANNUS boom used for all cylindrical

poles is hoisted together with the flag. Only the non-cylindric pole sections have a pole which turns completely in the wind. Optionally for some flagpole types a self-reset is available which see that all booms show the same direction when it is calm. The free-standing poles can be combined with the most different ground fixings. Please see chapter ground fasteners.

MANNUS banner systems in aluminium and steel are designed for the display of horizontal banners. A range of pole heights and diameters can accommodate a wide variety of different banner sizes. Taifun and Orkan are equipped with external hoisting systems which allow fast and trouble-free banner changes. The Info- point banner system has an internal hoisting system which offers „One-person-operation“, where hoisting of the banner is carried out with a single winding handle.

With MANNUS wall-mounted banner systemsyou can use the facade of your building as a billboard, displaying banners with a maximum size of up to 120 sq.m.. A range of different fixing and operation options are available.High quality designs in aluminium, stainless steel and steel guarantee a long service life.

MANNUS illuminated flagpoles offer a new dimension combining flags and lighting. The High Light range, with integrated lighting mo-dules in the upper third of the poles, provide a unique special effect. LED Line flagpoles with integrated LED lights create new accents in the environment. Flagpole lighting trans- forms the function of the flagpole in the desi-gned environment. And all of the designs are based on proven MANNUS flagpole elements with internal or external hoisting systems and hoistable booms, and are built to proven structural designs.

Mobile flagpoles are ideal particularly for events or temporary sales promotions. Flag-poles up to 8 metres high can be installed into our special mobile bases, without being fixed directly to the surroanding surface finish. Indoor poles (for example WINDY) have an integral counterbalance weight, and outdoor flagpoles require an additional coun-terbalance weight like a vehicle (MOBILIS), slabs (PERAGON) or pebbles/earth (TETRA-GON, HEXAGON).

The wide range of MANNUS ground fixings guarantees the stability of any flagpole instal-lation. From the simple plastic Type LK fixing or aluminium sleeve (Type Z fixing) through

the Type M fixing equipped with an eccentric adjustable ring and the heavy cast-iron G-fix-ing to the Type K tilting fixings, which allow a very simple mounting and laying of the flag-

poles, MANNUS offer a wide range of ground fixing options. The Type EM and EK earth anchors are set into the ground using a proprietary auger-type self-boring device.

MULT MAST Flagpole Bases

Multi-mast flagpole bases allow a number of flagpoles to be arranged as a group, using a choice of different steel constructions offering a fan-shaped display or a pole circle with a central flagpole. These multi-mast bases can be used in combination with a wide range of MANNUS flagpoles.

frequently asked questions... about flagpoles.

• What should the height of a flagpole be?This depends on it’s location. Normal-ly, a flagpole should be at least 1 m lower or considerably higher than the building which is directly behind it .

• What size should the foundation be?As a rule of thumb, a concrete founda-tion with a width and depth equivalent to 10% of the height of the flagpole above ground should be sufficient; for exact details please refer to our information on ground fixings (pages 76-79).

• What should the foundation be made of?The quality of the concrete and the reinforcement depend on location and flagpole type.

• What is the ideal flagpole diameter?The selection should be made to suitstatic load conditions; the bigger the mast diameter, the greater the static load which the flag-pole can resist!The strength of a flagpole is proportio-nal to the square of the mast diameter

• What is the maximum design wind force for flagpoles with and without flags?Our flagpoles are designed in ac-cordance with DIN 1055 to resist a maximum wind force of Beaufort 12 (hurricane) without flags and Beaufort 8 (storm) with flags. For standard flag-poles we recommend that flags should not be flown when the wind force is greater than Beaufort 8.

• What is the depth of the flagpole if it is fixed into a ground anchor?For standard flagpoles this is 0.7 m.

• Wich distances are necessary so that the booms within a multi-mast don`t touch each other?Recommended mast distance:

2-fold boom length + 50 cm

• What is the meaning of Gs certification?GS certification means verified safety. With this certification, safe functio-ning of our flagpoles is guaranteed. MANNUS works closely with TÜV in the Rhineland to develop our quality standards. Nearly all MANNUS flagpoles carry the label “TÜV Safety tested”. We will be pleased to send you copies of TÜV certifications with regard to our flagpoles on request.

• Why are structural calculations necessary for special applications?Because structural calculations are ne-cessary for standard applications, and an additional calculation is required to meet the particular circumstances of any special application.

• What is a (rotating) boom?A rotating boom is a horizontal element which is fixed to the flagpole to perma-nently support the top seam of the flag and is capable of a full 360° of rotation: when the wind blows, the boom rotates to follow the wind direction, and the flag is always fully displayed whether or not there is any wind.

• What is a resettable boom?A rotating boom which turns back in

calm winds to its initial position.

• What is a telescopic rotating boom?This is a horizontal element which is fixed to the flagpole and is telescopical-ly adjustable in length. Thus different flag formats can be used.

• What is an aluminium alloy?Aluminium alloys are formed from alloys of aluminium with other metals, particularly manganese, magnesium and silicium. Aluminium alloys can easily be recycled. The basic material is mostly Al99,5 (pure aluminium): the addition of the alloy improves struc-tural performance and also influences other properties.

•What type of aluminium is used in Mannus flagpoles?The EN AW 6005 material used by MANNUS combines high strength with maximum possible durability. This optimised material selection guarantees the long service life of our flagpoles.

• What is stainless steel?Stainless steel is a rust resistant, high grade steel. The standard material used in MANNUS flagpoles is grade 1.4301. Other stainless steel alloys are also available for special situations.

• What is GRP? Fibre-glass reinforced plastic is an al-ternative material to aluminium, with high stability. Flagpoles are supplied in a white finish as standard, and can be supplied in any RAL colour on request

• What type of coatings are offered by Mannus for flagpoles?The standard anodized finish for alu-minium flagpoles is E6 Ev1 (alumini-um nature). All other anodised colours are available from MANNUS on request. Additionally, powder coating or wet painting is also available in any RAL colour.

• What is an external hoisting system? With external hoisting systems, all parts of the halyard are located on the outside of the flagpole. The upper gui-de pulley is fixed directly to the top of the flagpole or integrated into the mast head. In the lower part of the flagpole there is a hoisting mechanism or cleat.

• What is the MAnnUs HV 0 hoisting system?A simple universal external hoisting system with a high quality cast pvc cleat. The halyard is tensioned by tying it off tightly onto the cleat.

• What is the MAnnUs HV 1 hoisting system?This is a universal hoisting system for flagpoles made of wood, steel tube, aluminium etc. The robust construc-tion made of corrosíon-free hard alu-minium with noise free durable nylon pulleys comes with fixing screws made of stainless steel. The integrated tensioner and adjustment device is operated with an Allen key (included)

• What is the MAnnUs HV 9 hoisting system?A modern external hoisting system made of fibre-glass reinforced weather-proof special plastic with integrated, automatic halyard clamping. The integrated stainless steel spring system not only maintains the tension of the halyard but also provides damping during strong gusts of wind. Ten-sioning or loosening of the halyard only requires a flick of the wrist. The decorative mast head has an integrated guide pulley and exactly matches the hoist in design and colour. The hoist is protected by a cylinder lock.

• What is the MAnnUs HV 23 hoisting system?This is a reinforced stainless steel hoisting system operated by a winding handle for flagpoles and banner poles with particularly high static load re-quirements. It is equipped with a self-locking return stop. Fine adjustment of the cable tension is also carried out using the winding handle.

• What is an internal hoisting system?Internal hoisting systems have a hoist guide in the flagpole or profile which largely eliminates beating of the halyard in the wind and guarantees a high level of anti-theft protection. For additional convenience we also offer some flagpoles with an internal hoisting system with an integral winch where the flag is hoisted using a winding handle.

• What is the MAnnUs HV 11 hoisting system?An internal hoisting system with a safety hoist clamp and two guide pulleys in the mast head. The halyard runs internally to the mast head and then over the two gui-de pulleys. When the flag is hoisted, all of the halyard is inside the mast. The safety clamp is located inside the mast and the hoist access is secured by a locking cover.

• What is a winding handle operated hoisting system?A winding handle operated hoisting system is a hoist in which an internal winch is operated by a removable winding handle, making hoisting and lowering the flag a simple and easy

operation.

• What is the MAnnUs HV strato winding handle hoisting system?With the MANNUS STRATO range of double chamber profile flagpoles, a stainless steel hoist equipped with sliders is retained in a dedicated hoist channel within the mast profile. Stainless steel guide pulleys in the mast head and in the hoist ensure the reliable operation of the self-tensio-ning endless halyard system. Hoisting and lowering of the flag is carried out using a winding handle inserted into the lower guide pulley. An automatic return stop avoids the lowering of the flag. The design of the winding handle insert protects against unauthorised use.

• Where is the hoist operating unit of the hoisting system located?For MANNUS flagpoles, the hoist operating unit is positioned to suit ergonomic requirements. The normal position is 1.3 m above ground level.

• What is the halyard made of?Halyards can be produced from pvc fibres, pvc fibres with a stainless steel core or stainless steel. The material used depends on the hoisting system. Halyards are UV-resistant.

• What does flag assembly mean?Flag assembly implies the seam width and length and sizing of the flags as well as the fixing equipment such as hooks, seams or piping.

• What is a freely flying flag assembly?The flag flies freely at the flagpole without a boom.

•What is a boom assembly?The flag is designed specially to attach to a boom.The flag is always fully displayed whether or not there is any wind.

• What is a hook assembly?Lateral snap hooks are used to fix the flag to flag loops (plastic loops) or eyelet bolts. For flagpoles with rotating booms, the top of the flag is fixed with hooks to the eyelet bolts on the boom.

• What is a seam assembly?A seam assembly is a sewn loop of material at the top of the flag which fits over the boom to support the flag.

• What is a seam-retained flag assembly?With a seam-retained flag assembly, piping (thin plastic pipe) is sewn into a very small seam at edge of the flag: this piping is then pushed into a slo-tted boom / mast and the flag is then tightly retained at the boom / flagpole.

• What are the different flag formats? The format and preparation of flags de-pends on whether they are to be used as hoisting flags, upright format flags, upright format flags with boom design, banners, hanging flags and tension flags, and the particular method of attachment which is required.

• How big should a flag be?Normally, a flag should not be longer than 50% of the flagpole height above ground. The bottom edge of the flag should be at least 3 m above the mast foot.
