  • Lesson objectivesKnow why aluminium and titanium are so usefulWhat method is used to extract metals that aremore reactive than carbon. Why does it cost so much to extract aluminiumand titanium.

  • Aluminium and Titanium

These are two metals with a low density which means they are lightweight for their size.

Aluminium is used for aircraft, trains, overhead power cables, saucepans and cooking foil.

  • Titanium, when pure, is a lustrous, white metal.

The metal burns in air and is the only element that burns in nitrogen. It is marvellous in fireworks.

  • Match the property to the use.

  • Aluminium and Titanium resist corrosion as they have a very thin layer of their oxides on the surface, which stops air and water getting to the metal.

  • Extraction Unlike iron, aluminium and titaniumcannot be extracted from their oxides by reduction with carbon because: Aluminium is more reactive than carbon, so the reaction does not work.

Titanium forms titanium carbide with carbon, which makes the metal brittle.

  • In order to get pure aluminium, impurities must first be removed from the bauxite. The aluminium oxide is then melted. 3 Electrolysis is then used to separate the aluminium from the oxygen.

Aluminium is mined in huge scales as bauxite. In a production plant, steps 2 and 3 use as much electricity as a small town.

  • First the oxide is reacted with chlorine to convert it into the chloride.

This chloride is purified by fractional distillation and then sodium added to displace the titanium.Titanium is displaced from its oxide by using a more reactive metal like sodium or magnesium.

  • COST

Aluminium extraction is expensive because the process needs a lot of electrical energy.

Titanium extraction is expensive because the process involves several stages and a lot of energy. This especially limits the uses of titanium.

  • Copy and completeAluminium and titanium alloys are useful as they ares. and have a .. density.Although aluminium is reactive, it does not cbecause its surface is coated with a thin, tough layerof aluminium Titanium does not corrode because it is not very r.. and also has its oxide layer to protect it.We use large amounts of y in the extractionof both metals from their ores which makes them The large number of steps involved in the extraction of the metals also contributes to their.. cost.(Collect crossword Al and Ti)

Could demo reactivity of aluminium by sprinkling aluminium powder into a Bunsen flame. MAKE SURE BUNSEN IS SET AT AN ANGLE so that the aluminium doesnt go down inside the burner.VERY VIGOROUS REACTION.
