Growing Intrest in Football Drives
the Formation of New Teams
Along with the rest of the world it seems Utila too is turning its back on sporting tradition in favour of football. This is no doubt driven by the massive popularity and huge marketing budgets of European Football. Johnny Hinds, founder of Utilas foot-ball leagues and manager of successful football team Sherryl, holds the view that the youth are driving this trend, moving away from the traditional sup-port of baseball. Utila have seven mens football teams which compete in regular leagues with matches played on Wednesdays, Satur-day and Sunday. Sherryl, pictured above, is the most successful Utilan team, topping the league seven times, followed only by Juvenus who have topped the league four times. Under 16s Aspiring players must have an above average school record and good behav-ior. At present there are four teams who meet on Mondays. Prospective players can get more infor-mation at their local school.
Woman’s League Another addition to the football com-munity is the establishment of a Ladies league in which there are currently only 3 teams. In previous years there has been a tour-ist team and if anyone is interested in joining meetings are on Saturdays, con-tact Sherryl Henandez at Triple H.
