AUTUMN TERM NEWSLETTER

Dear Parents/Guardians

As part of this year’s Remembrance and our on-going local history project, we will be having a whole school focus on World War 2 Monday 30th October – Friday 10th November. In KS1, the children will be looking at rationing; Y3 and Y4 will be looking at evacuees and the impact the war had on children whilst Y5 and Y6 will focus on the role of adults during the war. In addition to this, we will be learning about the Prisoner of War Camp which was located in Keadby during the war. If anyone has any information, photographs etc. they would be willing to share with the children, please contact school.

Y1 – Y6 will be walking to the war memorial in Althorpe on Friday 10th November. We will share poems and observe a minutes silence at 11.00am.

Friday 3rd November, children may come to school dressed in 1940s style clothes. Tuesday 7th November we will be having a STEM afternoon, with a range of science and technology activities linked to WW2.Friday 10th November in the afternoon, the Golden Friday Café will be in the style of a 1940s tea dance.

Foundation Stage and KS1 Eat and Meet Breakfast – Parents of all children from the 2Yr Provision, Nursery, Reception, Y1 and Y2 are invited to join us for a free breakfast from 8.30am in the school hall. This is a great opportunity to have an informal chat with Mrs Tate, Mrs Sowerby, Mrs Lovatt and Mrs Richards. There will be a short chat about growth mindset and the opportunity to meet Lewis, our new Health Activator.

Friends of School Bramble Bank Wood event

Please come and join with us on Thursday 23rd November in Bramble Bank Wood. The whole school will be involved in “making and doing work in the wood” as well as selling each class’s woodland inspired Christmas crafts. The FoS will provide hot chocolate.

Lunchtime Activity

Parents are welcome to come and join in/watch the new lunchtime activities that we are currently trialling on Wednesday 8th November. Please arrive at the school entrance for 11.45am

A crèche will be available.

Health Activator

We are one of eight schools in North Lincolnshire piloting, having a new post in school for one day per week, called a Health Activator. The reason for this is that our childhood obesity levels are one of the highest in N. Lincs.

Lewis is our healthy activator and he has been in school since September, every Thursday, observing our school at work, at play and eating. He has also led a whole school fun fitness session as part of National Healthy Day.

On Wednesday 8th November Lewis will be working with children across the school at 1.00pm and sharing some of the work he has already been doing in school.

Please come and join with us.

WAFT (Wrap Around Families Team) Mrs Lovatt and Mrs Richards form this very important team within school. They are always available to speak to pupils and parents at any point throughout the day. They can offer a vast range of support with behaviour at home or school, establishing routines, diet, healthy lifestyles and sleeping routines. They have many resources that families can borrow or keep ranging from books to relaxation CD’s and anxiety and stress relief strategies. Mrs Richards and Mrs Layton are our school’s Mental Health Champions and in this role they have attended specific training to support children and their families with their mental health and wellbeing. Mrs Richards in also a trained Counsellor and will listen to pupils and parents regarding any issues i.e. Bereavement and divorce issues. All sessions are highly confidential.

The ladies can be found in the Lilac Room.

Growth Mindset and the Power of Yet

Please come and join with staff for a workshop on Growth Mindset on Tuesday 7th November 3.00-4.00pm

After a period of consultation with the members of the Yellow Team it has been agreed that the new team colour to replace the yellow is to be purple. The reasons for this are due to the fact that:

The yellow shirt wearers are covered in insects during the summer months The yellow shirt washes badly and never looks clean – even though it is!

Either colour can now be worn by the Yellow/Purple team and both colours can be bought at Tesco.

Health and Safety Leaders

Well done to Alfie Dalton and Cole Joinson for being chosen to be this years Health and Safety leaders. They have many jobs to undertake throughout the year and are currently busy ensuring that Mrs Davidson locks the school gates on time and that all cloakrooms are kept clutter free with coats and bags on pegs each morning.

Sports Ambassadors

Four Y5 children have been chosen this year to be our Sports Ambassadors. They have already undertaken a full days training at The Pods and will be supporting staff with Inter House competitions as well as helping children across the school with catching and throwing skills, running and skipping. Well done to Warren Broadley, Markus Hirst, Emily Torn and Maddison Broughton.

Cross Country Race

144 children from our cluster schools ran at the Level 2 competition which we hosted, with 66 runners coming from our school. It was a great event and was well supported – thank you for this!

All the children ran very well and worked hard to do the best that they could. For children from the other schools, it was clearly the first time that many of them had run under race conditions and that distance, which makes us very proud of all the opportunities that we give our pupils; making sure that they are competition ready, is something which we hold dear.

A particular well done to Harry Baisley, Harlow Whattam, Maisie Davey and Emily Torn.

Badminton

Well done to our 8 badminton players who went and had a fun afternoon at Axholme Academy.

You did yourselves proud!

Harry Baisley, Kyle Rusling, Jess Everett, Neo Nothard, Harvey Nothard, Harry Booth, (Bailey Venemore and Freddie Booth – absent from photo).

Gunness and Burringham Fun Run

A great turn out from Althorpe and Keadby! Over 20 runners ranging from 2 to 48 years of age! How brilliant! Great to have past pupils – Thomas Rayment, Maisie Scott running with us too.

Speech and Drama

Drama Specialist Miss Jeannie is now employed to work with pupils for three afternoons per week. She runs a KS1 and KS2 after school club as well as preparing both key stages for the Scunthorpe Drama Festival in March.

Miss Jeannie also works with specific groups of children across the school on a SEAL programme (Social and Emotional Aspects of Learning) including building confidence, raising self-esteem as well as having lots of fun learning the skills of public speaking.

Eight girls visited Lindsey Lodge Hospice on Wednesday 18th October with Miss Jeannie to share ten poems and two songs. It was an extremely enjoyable afternoon, the girls performed beautifully well, looked incredibly smart and were an absolute pleasure to be with.

A huge thank you to Miss Jeannie, Ruby Porter, Lexi Shearman, Jessica Everett, Emily Torn, Isobel Hagan, Harlow Whattam, Grace Harty and Aleah Smith.

The girls enjoyed performing once again on Friday 20th October when we welcomed our friends from the community in for our annual harvest lunch.

REF (Respect, Excellence and Friendship) Assembly

It was a privilege to welcome Nathan Togan back to our school, an ex St Lawrence Academy pupil who is currently in training with the GB Bobsleigh Team. He presented the pupils with their medals and spoke about his passion for sport and his love of athletics. He believed that the most important thing is finding something that you enjoy and working hard at it. Nathan visited the Y6 class after the assembly where he presented the school with one of his GB Bob Sleigh training tops.

The East Barnby Y5 and Y6 Residential Trip

Was wonderful success despite the poor weather. The highlight for many, including Wayne and Catherine, was body boarding on the first day, closely followed by Mountain biking in Dalby Forest. The children’s behaviour and attitude was very good which ensured that we all had a great time and made the most of every opportunity.

Golden Friday Café

Thank you to all the family members who support the Children’s Golden Friday café.

Friday 10th November, Friday 24th November and Friday 8th December are the dates for the Cafes up to Christmas.

Althorpe and Keadby Primary School is a member of Operation Encompass. This means that the Designated Safeguarding Lead of the school – Mrs Tate – will be informed by the police if there has been a domestic violence incident. This ensures that school can support a child if/when necessary.

Aspirational Bricks

Please return the attached slip if you have a family member who attended our school. The children enjoy hearing about past pupils and it really does inspire them to keep working hard and have ambitions.
