VoIP vs PSTN
"The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) published a request for public comment <http://hraunfoss.fcc.gov/edocs_public/attachmatch/DA-09-2517A1.pdf> (pdf) on an upcoming transition from the decades-old circuit-based Public Switched Telephone. Network to a new system run entirely with Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) technology. This is perhaps the most serious indication to date that the legacy telephone system will, in the near future, reach the end of its life. This public commenting phase represents a very early stage in what will undoubtedly be a very complex transition that makes this year's bumpy switch from analog to digital television look relatively easy."

Dual SIP Paths
Released local to travel shortest path possible
• Make Sure the Internet Connection supports enough bandwidth for Voice and Data
• Bandwidth by itself is not enough, IP latency is a key ingredient to a Quality VoIP product. (150ms or less)
• Speed and path that the voice is traveling will affect quality
• No need for expensive MPLS overhead because of the router’s ability to create Ipsec tunnels between sites
Transport Elements to Consider
Open SIP StandardsThere are several “FLAVORS” of SIP
• Open SIP
• Proprietary SIP
•.Mixed / Hybrid of the two
Alteva uses open SIP Standards. This is important to identify when customers ask if they can reuse their phones. Examples of SIP phones that are compatible with Alteva’s VoIP offering:
•Polycom 330, 430, 450, 501, 550, 601, 650, and more.
