ALTERNATIVES TO TESTING
Word transformation• The Object of a word
transformation puzzle is to change a given word to another by altering one letter at a time, each time forming a “new word”,.
• For example, changing DOG to CAT in three moves could be done this way: dog => dot => cot => cat.
Now try these:
1. EAST to WEST in 3 moves.2. BOY to MAN in 3 moves.3. HATE to LOVE in 3 moves.4. HARD to EASY in 4 moves.
Answers:
1. EAST, last, lest, west.2. BOY , bay, ban, man.3. HATE, have, lave, love.4. HARD, hart, hast, east, easy.

Portfolios of Student Work
• Have students prepare an ongoing, extensive portfolio of their work.
• Maintain these portfolios in an open but supervised setting.
• During parent-teacher conferences, have student in attendance and have parents go through portfolio with student under the watchful eyes of the teacher.
Rubric Evaluation• Does it assess what you think it
assesses?• Does it really reflect what the
students were actually doing?• Is it fair and is it doable?• Do the students know about it ahead
of time?
