    Alternatives to Group Discussions

    Essay Writing: Essays are in many can be a critical way of evaluating a

    candidate. They are you. But they also speak in your voice. Candidates are scored

    on their ability to express, organize, and support opinions and ideas.

    Essays are scored based on four main concepts:

    Focus: the clarity with which the response presents and maintains themain idea.

    Support/Elaboration: the extent to which the main idea is supported andexplained by the details and reasons.

    Organization: the explicitness of the text structure or plan and the clarityof the logical flow of ideas.

    Grammar and Conventions: the extent to which the response showscontrol of the use of standard English and the extent to which errors

    interfere with communication of the main idea.

    Extempore Speaking: Extempore is the art of speaking without any preparation

    on a given topic. Most often, the term is used in the context of speech and stage

    Presentations: Asking candidates to give a presentation is becoming

    increasingly popular at second interview stage. Presentations are less about

    content and more about how well you can perform. A presentation is a means

    of communication which can be adapted to various speaking situations,

    such as talking to a group, addressing a meeting or briefing a team. Someof the qualities which can be evaluated through a presentation include:

    Ideas, concepts or issues talked about or spoken to a group or audience Organisation skills: Sequence should be logical & understandable The body language and confidence level that the manager exudes coupled

    with the ability to express his thoughts articulately and fluently in English

    Case Discussions: Case discussion is interactive, student-centered exploration

    of realistic and specific narratives that provide grist for inductive learning. Thestudents engage in the intellectual, and emotional, exercise of facing complex

    problems and making critical decisions within the constraints imposed by

    reality, e.g. limited time and information, and pervasive uncertainty. In their

    effort to find solutions and reach decisions through discussion, they sort out

    factual data, apply analytical tools, articulate issues, reflect on their relevant

    experience, and draw conclusions they can carry forward to new situations. In

    the process, they acquire substantive knowledge, develop analytic and

    collaborative skills, and gain in self-confidence and attention to detail.
