Alternative to ‘said’

When you’re writing, you may even start boring yourself, due to the excessive amount of times you have used the word ‘said’. During the writing process, don’t worry about it. It is during your editing process that you or us can go through your work with a finetoothed comb and change the word said into variations of the word. Why is this important? Repetitiveness in writing, in any form, can make the task of reading your work arduous and that is the last thing you want your reader   (examiner)   to   feel  when   they   read  your  work.  You  want   them  to   feel   intrigued  and compelled to read.   But  beware; you can’t  simply replace the word said with another word, unless  you have  the context   right.  For  example,   if  you are  introducing a  quote  you surely wouldn’t want to use ‘heckle’ to introduce it. Dr Crane heckled ‘feminist literary theory can be applied to many famous works.’ Heckled, although it is a variation of ‘said’ is not correct here. So we’ve done the hard work for you and compiled a list of our favourite academic alternatives with definitions (all definitions provided by Oxford University Dictionary Online 2012). After each definition there is an example of how each could be used to introduce a quote.

Acknowledge  accepting or admitting the truth of.  The source acknowledges the importance of proofreading.

Announce  –  to make a public  and typically   formal  declaration about a  fact,  occurrence,  or intention. The source made an announcement to the importance of proofreading.

Answer – a thing said, written or done to deal with or as a reaction to a question, statement, or situation.  The source answered questions regarding proofreading.

Disclose – make (secret or new information) known. The source disclosed new information on proofreading.

Justify – be a good reason for.  The source justified the importance of proofreading.

Confirm – to establish the truth or correctness of (something previously believed, suspected, or feared to be the case).  The source confirmed the importance of proofreading.

Indicate – to be a sign or symptom of; strongly imply.  The source indicated the importance of  proofreading.

Interject  – say (something) abruptly,  especially as an aside or an interruption.   The source interjected at the other source’s assumption that proofreading was unimportant.

Mark – to be an indication of. The source marked the importance of proofreading by…

Reckon – take or (fail to take) into account. The source reckons that the improvement of grade in some students was by…

Repeat – to say again something one has already said. The source repeated the importance of proofreading.

Observed – to notice or perceive something and register it as being significant.   The source observed the importance of proofreading in her book.

Noted  – A brief record of facts, topics, or thoughts written down as an aid to memory. The source has noted many times, the importance of proofreading.

So there you have it. Of course this is not a comprehensive list. But you should now understand that you don’t need to use ‘said’ at all.
