DetailsDetails

Details,details, details.

And whythey’re so

important.

Imagine a living room with only furniture– just a couch, a coffee table, some easychairs and end tables. That’s all. No rugon the floor, no pictures on the walls, nophotographs on the tables, no plants nearthe window. No candles, knickknacks orfloral arrangements to be seen. Not even amagazine on the coffee table.

If you walked into such a room, yourimmediate impression would be,“Something’s missing!” And you’d be right. In fact, a lot of “things” are missing, thingsthat transform a functional room into abeautiful, comfortable and pleasant home.

What’s missing, of course, are the decorativedetails – the accent objects people add togive a room interest, appeal andindividuality.

And what’s true for interior decoration isalso true for exterior design – it’s the details, the added accents, that distinguish a homefrom those around it.

Premium Vinyl Siding adds beauty, protection and value to a home.

But it’s the details – the use of decorativetrim and accessories – that add the lastingdistinction.

So how do you add distinction? All it takes is a little creativity.First, know your exterior design options. This brochure will help with that. On thefollowing pages, you’ll see idea after ideafor using trim and accessories. Thephotographs are organized like a decorator’sscrapbook. Each section focuses on aspecific exterior design feature – doors andwindows, for example. Along with thephotos are brief captions that highlight keydesign elements, plus list the products used.(Specific product descriptions are includedat the end of the brochure.)

Second, imagine how you can change thelook of your home by using one or moreof the ideas shown. Use an idea exactly asyou see it. Or combine several ideas tocreate an exterior detail that’s distinctlyyou.

And don’t worry – you can do it. Thedetails that brighten your living room areall the proof you need.

One of the first things people notice abouta home’s exterior are the windows. In asense, windows are like pictures orphotographs on a wall – they create specificpoints of interest within an otherwisemassive surface.

These points of interest – the accents – arethe basic building blocks of an exteriordesign. When the choice of window trimcomplements your siding, the result is apleasing, unified exterior design.

Look forways to unify

a design usingsimilar elements.

Here, the boldvertical lines createdby TrimworksW 3 1/2"lineals complement

the distinctivelines created by

dutch lap siding.

Because of their size, bay and bow windowsoften require creative approaches. On thishome, for example, Trimworks 5" lineals andAlside’s bay/bow window trim are combinedto create a distinctive window frame (above).

When selecting details, keep proportions inbalance. The impact of this massive windowarea, for example, is augmented by the boldlines of the 5" Trimworks lineals used to frameit. Using a contrasting color for the windowtrim accentuates the boldness of the frame.

Trimworkscustom crown

molding can addan elegant

decorative detailto a home’s

original woodwindow trim.

Add distinction using classic architecturaldetails. Instead of conventional mitered jointsat the corners, the head and sill of this windowframe are extended beyond the sides, a detailtypically found in Mission style homes (below).

The 21/2" J-channel used to trim these gablewindows repeats the narrow line runningalong the gable trim board (left).

If your home has distinctive details, don’tchange them – restore them. The originalwindow trim details on this 120-year-oldfarmhouse are reproduced using 5" lineals forthe top of the frame, 3 1/2" lineals at the sides, and color-matched aluminum trim for thesill. Contrasting low-maintenance shuttersgive the windows greater visual impact.

Selecting Window Trim. The detail that adds a finishing touch.

Visitors see the trim around doorsfrequently and up close. That makes doortrim one of the most important exteriordesign decisions you can make. And, inmost cases, it’s more than a single decision. You may, for example, choose a moreimpressive trim to set off a main entrance, but prefer less dramatic treatments forsecondary entrances.

Consider different ideas for the trim aroundgarage doors too. If you have a “premium”door – for instance, a door with raisedpanels or with decorative window inserts– you may want to consider a bold triminstallation to “frame” the accents andmaintain appropriate visual balance.

Finally, don’t forget trim for entry ways –the wall and ceiling areas that lead toyour doors. The use of vertical siding, beaded soffit and accessories such as crownmolding can give your home a customdesigned look.

The beauty of this decorative dooris magnified by a frame made using5" fluted lineals (above).

Use contrast to create interest.Horizontal lines formed by dutchlap siding dominate the main wallsof this home. But at the arch andcolumns that form the entry way, vertical soffit creates a distinctivecontrast that seems to guide visitorsto the front door (left).

6 7

Selecting Doors and Entryway Trim.A welcoming first impression.

Go for grandeur when you can. Thiselegant front entrance (above) is set offwith Trimworks 5" fluted lineals usedas a main frame and Trimworks 3 1/2"lineals used to frame the side andtransom lights.

If possible, try a doublecontrast. Here again,

vertical soffit creates acontrast with the horizontalsiding on the home. The colorcontrast adds to the appeal.

An interplay of lines can producedramatic results. The 31/2" linealsused for the door and windowtrim play off the thinner linesproduced by the balusters and postsof the porch balustrade (whichrepeats the even thinner lines ofthe porch frieze). A corner postusing 5" fluted lineals, with thebeaded corner starter completesthe design scheme.

The main entrance to this home is definedby stately columns created using Trimworksfluted corner posts.

Corners – especially outside corners – helpdefine the proportions of a home. Andbecause they define proportions, the creativeuse of corner treatments can influence the“apparent size” of your home (the visualimpression it creates as opposed to its actualmeasurements). Bold corner treatments, forexample, add lines of vertical emphasis toa wall, encouraging a viewer’s eyes to lookup. It’s an excellent way to create a sense ofheight. Similarly, narrow corner treatmentstend to accentuate a wall’s horizontal lines.

The verticaldimensions of this

home are magnified bythe use of Trimworksfluted corner posts atthe primary corners.

The resulting boldvertical lines help create

an impression ofsoaring height.

Vertical columns anchor the second story of this home. They’recreated using standard 4" corner posts and Charter Oak® premiumvinyl soffit installed vertically. A fascia board and an overlappedpair of lineals, installed to create a shadow line, carry the widthof the column up the gable. A double-width band board at thebase of the column ties the treatment together.

Take cues from existing features.A standard 3" corner post and narrowshutter help create a pleasing sense ofproportion in the tight area betweenwindow and building corner.

7" fluted corner post with foam inserthelps balance the mass of the garagedoor. The door itself is framed with5" smooth lineals.

Color contrasts let you create subtle but strikingdetails. White windows create contrast withthe darker tones of the siding. Corners andwindow trim in a medium tone create anothercontrast. The overall impression is one of bothcontrast and harmony.

Don’t overlook the use of simple lines asa means of adding distinction to an exteriordesign. Details such as rake boards (whichhelp define the slope of a gable end wall)and band boards (typically used to set offdifferent elevations of a home) are amongthe most striking design elements youcan add.

The 5" Trimworks lineals used as band boards help definethe elevations of this home while accentuating its horizontallines. The one-piece beaded corner posts emphasize the home’svertical dimensions.

To give detail to the roof line, this home combinesaluminum fascia and 5" Trimworks lineals used as rakeboards. The combination creates double shadow linesthat define the roof ’s slope.

The dimensions of this home seem to stretchin all directions as a result of the artful useof lines, starting with the band boards thatseparate the contrasting siding materials. TheMission style window trim reinforces thehorizontal emphasis (right).

A combination of 5" band boards and 5"lineals in the corner posts are used to set offthe different materials used to finish thishome’s exterior. The lines formed by the bandboards also help define the home’s elevations(below).

Trimworks crown molding providesan easy and elegant way to finish avinyl siding installation where it meetsbrick or stucco walls.

Choosing a Color.

When choosing colors for decorative trim, the best place to start is with your primarysiding color.

Do you want siding and trim to match(or nearly so)? That’s called a monochromaticcolor scheme, and it’s a great way to create animpression of harmony and unity.

Or do you want to create a contrast, either asubtle contrast or a bold one? Using contrastingcolors is an excellent way to emphasize detailsand framework.

With your answer in mind, use the chart tochoose a low-gloss, easy-care color for your trimoptions.
