SDASLA would like to thank our sponsors for providing us with the financial support
to provide a very successful 2009 Lecture Series. Through their contributions, we were
able to host two very inspirational, southern California landscape professionals who
shared their design philosophy and several of their projects: Mia Lehrer and Mark
Rios, FASLA. The Lecture Series was held in October and November at The
Neurosciences Institute, who generously donated their auditorium for these
outstanding events.
We are already beginning to plan for this year. If you have speaker ideas, would
like to volunteer, or would like to be a sponsor for the 2010 Lecture Series, please use
the enclosed sponsor form and e-mail Brooke Pietz at [email protected].

2010: Making Connections
By the time you read this, we will have made it through the holiday sea-son and into the new year. Without belaboring the fact that the last coupleof years have been tough business-wise for mostof you, I want to share some good news regardingour Chapter.
Due to great leadership over the last few years, our Chapter remains on solid ground both from afinancial and professional standpoint. Despite ourrelative small chapter size, on a National levelour Chapter is recognized for a number of things, including great leadership as evidenced by the2007 ASLA Presidency of Pat Caughey. We are alsoone of the few Chapters with a Strategic Plan, andwe were the first Chapter to press for and achievea Student Affiliate Chapter at Cuyamaca College.
Financially, our Chapter is also doing well.Despite lower than anticipated fund raising in2009, we have been able to fund most of ourprograms and events and have money in reserve.Last year, we had a fantastic Kick Off event, fullyfunded our Community Grant and ended the year with an outstandingDesign Awards event.
The current Board continues to embrace the Vision and Mission of ourChapter. To help achieve this in 2010, our Chapter theme is MakingConnections. Our goal as a Board is to maintain and enhance our connec-tions to our members, sponsors, allied professionals, Student Affiliates, and the public. We are all in this together working towards a commongoal - taking leadership positions on those issues that confront design pro-fessionals today.
We need to connect with our past chapter Presidents, to help mentorand develop new Chapter leaders. We need to connect with our sponsorsand support the use of their products and services. We need to connectwith allied professionals, to show our leadership abilities, form partner-ships and develop strategies for better collaborations.
Most of all, we need to encourage our members to retain their member-ship in and their connection to ASLA. Kim Douglas, of the ASLA ColoradoChapter, wrote a piece called, “When the Going Gets Tough, the ToughTurn to Professional Associations.” She outlines how your membershipprovides visibility, opens doors and cements relationships through net-working, lends professional credibility and provides exposure to newideas and practices. A link to her entire article is on our website homepage(left column), so take a minute to read it, and encourage anyone you knowwho might be debating the value of ASLA membership or participation inChapter activities, to read it too.
As a Board, we optimistically look forward to another productive yearin which we can promote the profession, ASLA and our Members.Happy New Year!

The Cuyamaca College Student Affiliate Chapter (CSAC) ofthe American Society of Landscape Architects has been verybusy in its second year. We now have 23 members and lookforward to adding a few more next semester.
Two design competitions were arranged for members of thecollege’s Horticulture Society last year. One was for the Mt.Helix Park Foundation. The entrance to the park was to beredesigned with some very strict parameters -- there was noirrigation and it had to deter after hours entrance to the park. There were four participants; David Clarke, Sylke Clark, EllenLandfear and Carol Fuller. Ellen Landfear was our winner witha beautifully rendered design.
The second design competition is for the San DiegoFireman’s Relief Association which includes a statue dedicatedto the Firefighter’s of San Diego County and a piece of 9/11steel. This design competition is still in the planning stages andan announcement will be out soon.
San Diego’s Habitat for Humanity is re-designing theentrance to their corporate facility and is hoping we can help. This is still in the design stage but it is another opportunity forCSAC ASLA to become an active part of our community. Wehave been working with Habitat and the Jimmie JohnsonFoundation, to locate homes near the college in need oflandscape design and installation.
Another project in the works is the restoration of a house inEl Cajon. This should be another fun project researching howthe house looked when it was first built and deciding how bestto restore it to its former glory. We are looking forward toworking with a member of the San Diego Chapter of the ASLAwho specializes in restoration work.
Members of the San Diego Chapter of the ASLA who areready, willing and able to retain students to fill paid or non-paid positions with their firms for work experience creditwould help our Student Affiliate members obtain creditrequired to finish our two year certificate program. Hopefully,we will soon have a number of positions for our student clubmembers to choose from. Contact me at [email protected] formore information on student backgrounds and qualifications.
The National Meeting of the American Society ofLandscape Architects will be in San Diego in 2011, and plansfor the convention are starting now. We plan to have an activepart in the convention since we are the first ever StudentAffiliate Chapter for ASLA at a 2 year institution of learning.
As always, we look forward to working with the CuyamacaCollege Botanical Society on the 2010 Sustainable UrbanLandscape seminar, Spring Garden Festival and theScholarship Dinner.

National Trustee ReportBy Glen Schmidt, FASLA, National Trustee
The national ASLA membership forecast for the end of theyear is in the lower sixteen-thousands, which represents aseven percent drop from end-of-year 2008. Member ServicesCommittee and staff efforts to promote membership continue;providing chapters with up-to-date information and promo-tional materials, and encouraging one-on-one contact are toppriorities. With solid management by Executive VP/CEONancy Somerville it looks like ASLA national will end theyear in the black, which is a tribute to Ms. Somerville’s proac-tive response to declining revenues. Prior to the annual meet-ing in Chicago, the ASLA national website was upgraded witha graphic refresh and for The Dirt blog, which is beingpicked up by other blogs and has hit a milestone with 100,000page views in less than a year. From December 2008 throughDecember 2009 the ASLA web site (ASLA.org) had a total ofalmost 4.5 million page views and 1.2 million unique visits.
The San Diego regional model water conservation ordinancehas been completed and can be viewed at http://www.water-conservationsummit.com. A number of municipalities aremoving to pass new landscape standards to comply with AB1881 by January 2010. The City of San Diego passed their newstandards on November 10, 2009, and the County of SanDiego passed theirs on December 9, 2009. Glen Schmidt testi-fied on behalf of ASLA San Diego at both hearings.
Our Chapter’s Water Conservation Committee produced14 Position Papers which have been approved by ourChapter’s Executive Committee and are posted on the website at http://www.asla-sandiego.org/reference.html. Thepapers include positions regarding the following industry is-sues: Water Conservation; Fire Safety and Landscaping; GolfCourse Water Conservation; Gray Water and Rainwater Usefor Irrigation; Home Owner Association Water Conservation;Reclaimed, Recycled and Re-Purified Water; RegionallyAppropriate Landscapes; Revegetation/Restoration; TheValue of Native Plants; and The Value of Parks.
California Council of ASLA - Your Voice in SacramentoBy Jon Wreschinsky, CCASLA Representative
The past year has shown us that there are many issuescritical to us as practitioners of landscape architecture andas California citizens. The California Council of ASLA(CCASLA) is continuing to monitor these and many otherlegislative and regulatory actions on behalf of the fourCalifornia ASLA Chapters and our members.
Water, as usual, remains a huge issue. The State ofCalifornia recently passed a number of pieces of legislationrelated to water conservation, monitoring of groundwatersupplies, and protection of the state’s water supplysystem. Senate Bill (SB) 1 x 7 – was recently negotiated inthe state legislature and signed by the Governor. The billwas designed to reform state policies, programs andgovernance for the Sacramento-San Joaquin Delta (Delta)protection and establish guidelines for developing a newDelta Plan including achieving the two co-equal goals ofproviding a more reliable water supply for California andprotecting, restoring, and enhancing the Delta ecosystem. The co-equal goals will be achieved in a manner thatprotects and enhances the unique cultural, recreational, natural resources, and agricultural values of the Delta asan evolving place. This bill provided a marked departurefrom previous efforts to enact legislation to protectCalifornia’s state water system. As a result of this bill’senactment, there will be a series of public works projectsunprecedented in California’s history, many that willinclude the need for participation by landscape architects.
The protection of our vested interests in the designprofession is another issue being followed. Senate Bill (SB)189, Mechanics Lien – as proposed, this legislation willreorganize and restate the statutory mechanics lien lawand will provide the ability of landscape architects to filea lien for recovery of fees owed to them for design servicesrendered under contract. A number of landscape architects/firms have recently lost substantial design fees as clientshave chosen to ignore billing leaving many with no legalrecourse. CCASLA continues to work diligently with itslobbyist to affect inclusion of landscape architects in this
legislation.Another issue that CCASLA continues to monitor is
continuing education as a licensure requirement.Currently, continuing education credits are not requiredfor landscape architects. The state Architects Board hasrecently adopted the need for credits for licensed architectsbut is having issues with administering this requirement. There have been no serious discussions to include such arequirement for landscape architects. However, as otherstates adopt continuing education requirements, and asCalifornia works through these issues for other designprofessions, this may become an issue we all need toseriously consider here in California as a way to furtherdifferentiate ourselves as practitioners.
Finally, CCASLA has been closely monitoring proceed-ings on our state licensure sunset review process, which isscheduled to occur in the next two years. As developmentsplay out, CCASLA will remain actively involved and keepyou informed when and where you can get involved.
