Organization: General space throughout the classroom. Students will be put into groups of 4 by teacher’s count-off of 1-4. There will be 5 designated areas per group.

Description of Activity: After the 5 groups have received their Alphabet scavenger hunt handout and pencil, each group will be instructed to perform one of the 5 locomotor skills (walking, skipping, hopping, trotting, or jogging), which will be assigned per handout. Each group will have 3 minutes to use their assigned locomotor skills to move around the classroom to search for letters of the alphabet, which there will be 5 of each letter placed throughout the room. Each group may only claim one letter of each letter of the alphabet A-Z, listed on the handout. Each group needs one student to check off letters claimed. Have the 4 students within each group

work together to ensure all students are participating. After their 3 minutes of the hunt, the students will then walk back to their designated area. Each group will then be given 1 minute to come up with as many words as they can using each letter only once, using their designated areas to form the words. Each group will then be asked to share the words that they came up with. This game may be repeated several times throughout a class period.

Teaching Suggestions/Variations: 1. Discuss communication and cooperation before beginning the scavenger hunt. 2. After each game is over, pair new students within each of the 5 groups to create diversity and each student using a new locomotor skill.

3. For students with disabilities, allow them the option to have a buddy during the scavenger hunt.

Safety Considerations: *Remind students that: 1. They should be aware of surroundings, such as steps, desks and chairs, and other students. 2. They need to ensure shoes are tied.
