Promoting education, training, and professional development in financial management
Aloha Chapter
Aloha,
As a chapter, we have placed our votes and elected a new team of Officers who have readily accepted the task of leading our chapter this year. As a team, we are responsible to ensure we meet our mission of promoting education, training, and professional development. There will be challenges but with hard work and dedication plus your support, we can accomplish the mission.
We have some awesome community service opportunities this year; from supporting the Institute of Human Services
(IHS), Habitat for Humanity, to collecting canned goods and non-perishable foods to donate. So be on the lookout for the invite requesting volunteers.
We would like to touch on the successes and accomplishments of our past and most recent Aloha Chapter
Scholarship winners both at the local and National level! Congratulations, we are so proud of our students and wish them the very best as they pursue their education. A special thanks to our Scholarship Committee, Ms. Mary Garcia and her team, for a job well done!
We are a very active chapter, have been gaining momentum over the years with the quality of our programs; from the
luncheons, community service, scholarship program, to the Holiday party, and let us not forget the RPDI. We are looking forward to keeping the momentum going this year! We have some wonderful individuals that have volunteered this year with some new exciting ideas to present. We still have committee positions available, so if you are interested in being a part of this committee, please contact us. Our contact information can be found on page 14.
Lastly, please take note of the recent and upcoming activities that have been included in this Newsletter. Mahalo!

ASMC SCHOLARSHIP WINNERS – Where Are They Now?
By Mary Garcia, Scholarship Chair
Scholarship Information
The ASMC Aloha Chapter has presented over $35K in the past 10 years to local high school students in Hawaii. The Scholarship
Committee reflects on the past achievements of our scholarship winners and contacted them to find out how the scholarship has
helped them in their college careers. We wish them much success on their future endeavors!
Our 2014 Scholarship Winners were Lorelei Zabanal and Mitchell Garcia, who both graduated from Maryknoll High School.
Thank you so much to the ASMC Aloha Chapter for making my dreams of attending college a reality. With your help
and positive influence, I've been able to accomplish the biggest milestone of my life thus far. It's been a challenging
journey in the last four years, and ASMC made it possible! Mahalo, and hopefully I will see you all when I am back in
Hawaii!
In interviewing Lorelei Zabanal, she shared the following:
"Maliit pero matapang" -- roughly translated from Tagalog to English,
this phrase means small, but fierce. It was the phrase I chose for my
graduation cap because I feel it represents not only my collegiate
journey, but also my life's philosophy!
I graduated from the University of Hawaii at Manoa this past spring
with my BA in Economics and double minors in Business
Administration and Political Science. In the past four years, I have
learned a lot. In my academics, I achieved Sophomore High Honors
through the Honors Program, and attained the distinction of Deans List
in two semesters. Work wise, I received a scholarship to participate in
the Manoa Political Internship in Spring 2015, where I worked full-
time at the Hawaii State Legislature in the office of Representative Sam
Kong. Furthermore, inspired by the generosity of ASMC in my
collegiate career, I worked as a Bookkeeper at a hospitality group in my
senior year.
Presently, I have just moved to the San Francisco Bay Area! I am
currently looking for a job in either accounting or sales operations
within a tech company. I highly encourage anyone who is thinking
about furthering their education to do it. It truly is a challenge - you
have to be open minded and be willing to put in the work. But the
benefits you gain are truly worth it - not only the knowledge, but also
the networks and community you leave the institution with.

Scholarship Information
Attending the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV) has
been an interesting and exciting experience. No matter how
challenging the obstacles may be that veer in my path, my
determination and drive to excel in all endeavors is by far my strongest
attribute. I graduated from UNLV this past May with a Bachelor of
Arts Degree in Hospitality Management, after changing majors from
Computer Science and learning were my passions lie.
Exceling in academics, I was awarded a Hospitality
Management scholarship and held honors on the Dean’s List. While
balancing work and my college life, my fraternity, Zeta Beta Tau
offered me leadership experiences such as Community Service Chair,
Recruitment Chair, Communications Chair, and Sports Chair and
developed my brotherhood connections for life, as well as contributing
to our Las Vegas community in various charitable events. I continued
to give back to my community through volunteering and collecting
donations for the Children’s Miracle Network in Las Vegas, Three
Square Food Bank and at Las Vegas hospitals.
Fine-tuning my skills and understanding what I am passionate about
encouraged me to pursue many adventures in my college journey. On
campus, I worked as an Intramural Sports Referee and Program
Assistant in officiating college intramural sports. This experience
allowed me to understand the inter-workings of the University system
while keeping me fit.
For two summers, I had the opportunity to work for the Navy at the COMPACFLT Human Resources Offices in the
Equal Employment Opportunity Division and learned the value of the government service. Working with devoted subject
matter experts who were kind, determined and willing to share their knowledge, I was able to compare and contrast
employment in the public and private sector.
Unfortunately, for me, the government experience was not a fit for me, but a worthwhile career path for one that has a
passion to serve. During my junior and senior years, I was able to open the Hawaiian Honey Cones franchise in Las
Vegas and California and developed my skills in Event management and planning for Festivals and Special Events. It
provided me an avenue to learn and grow and experience the bottoms up details of operating a business. As for the
future, I plan to live in Las Vegas and continue to lead the franchise operations for Hawaiian Honey Cones in Las Vegas,
California and possibly, Colorado. My future is full of unbelievable and challenging paths in my journey in life and I
can’t wait to explore them!
My successes would not have been possible without scholarships such as yours. Mahalo to the American Society of
Military Comptrollers Aloha Chapter for their generosity in helping me achieve my goals! It has been an unbelievable
ride and I look forward to a very bright future!
