c a n a da s to c k l i s tA L M A 2020
Dear Reader,
As Alma enters its fifteenth year, we are delighted to present our forthcoming programme for 2020.
Our Evergreen classics list continues to broaden both in scope and diversity: by the end of November, this series will have reached one hundred titles – an incredible milestone for a small independent publisher like Alma. Among our new Evergreen books – all presented in beautifully produced editions with a wealth of notes and extra material – are such masterly works as Kate Chopin’s The Awakening, Kahlil Gibran’s The Prophet and Sun Tzu’s The Art of War.
In the 101-Pages series we will publish a number of unjustly neglected literary gems, such as Huysman’s With the Flow, Gautier’s Jettatura, Machiavelli’s The Life of Castruccio Castracani and Dostoevsky’s Uncle’s Dream.
As for the rest of the programme, we are delighted to bring out Naina Yeltsina’s poignant memoir, My Life with Boris, as well a fantastic trio of Russian classics: the first-ever unabridged translation of Goncharov’s Malinovka Heights, a large selection from Afanasyev’s Tales from Russian Folklore and Volume 3 of our four-volume edition of Pushkin’s complete lyrics and shorter poems.
Over the last fifteen years we have had our ups and downs, our successes and disappointments, but we have managed to steer our way through one of the most challenging – indeed, revolutionary – periods in British publishing history while continuing to promote literature in translation and remaining faithful to Alma’s ideals of high production quality and literary excellence.
With a growing, thriving list, Alma’s past is solid and its future looks bright – and we thank you for your continued support.

While Charles Dickens is best known and cel-ebrated for his prolific journalistic output and novelistic creations, he also devoted some of his creative energies to verse.
At turns sentimental, melancholy, playful, hu-morous and satirical, and ranging considerably in tone and format – from songs to narrative prologues for novels and “squibs” for newspa-pers – the poems in this collection highlight Dickens’s gift for language and his unfailing power to touch.
A literary phenomenon in his lifetime, and re-nowned as much for his journalism and public speaking as for his novels, Charles Dickens (1812–70) now ranks as the most important Victorian writer and one of the most influential and popular authors in the English language.

THE SONG OF ROLANDThe Song of Roland is the earliest and finest example of the chanson de geste, a verse epic celebrating heroic deeds to be sung or recited by wandering minstrels. Presented here in a sparkling new translation by Anthony Mortimer along with the original Anglo-Norman French, this poetic masterpiece offers the modern reader both an engrossing narrative and a compelling insight into the medieval value system.

On his thirtieth birthday, the bank clerk Josef K. is suddenly arrested by mysterious agents for an unspeci-fied crime, and finds his life taken over by the opaque bureaucratic procedures. He is tormented by the psy-chological pressures exerted by his legal nightmare.
Published the year after the author’s death, but writ-ten ten years earlier, The Trial is the most acclaimed of Kafka’s three novels, and is both a haunting meditation

TALES FROM RUSSIAN FOLKLORE Alexander Afanasyev
NEW TRANSLATION BY STEPHEN PIMENOFF
Towards the middle of the nineteenth century, Alexander Afanasyev embarked on the ambitious task of sifting through the huge reposito-ry of tales from Russian folklore and selecting the very best. The result is one of the most influential and enduringly popular books in Russian literature. This large selection will give English readers the opportu-nity to discover one of the founding texts of the folkloristic tradition.
Displaying a vast array of unforgettable characters, such as Baba-Ya-ga, Ivan the Fool, Vasilisa the Fair and the Firebird, these tales will enchant readers for their raw beauty and ability to surprise and excite.
MALINOVKA HEIGHTS Ivan GoncharovNEW TRANSLATION BY STEPHEN PEARL
THE MOTHER Maxim Gorky
TRANSLATED BY HUGH APLIN
Inspired by real events and centring on the figure of Pelageya Vlasova – the mother of the title – and her son Pavel, Gorky’s masterpiece de-scribes the brutal life of Russian factory workers in the years leading to the 1905 Revolution and explores the rise of the proletariat, the role of women in society and the lower classes’ struggle for self-armation.
A book of the utmost importance, in the words of Lenin, and a land-mark in Russian literature, The Mother – here presented in a brilliant version by Hugh Aplin – will enchant modern readers both for its his-torical significance and its intrinsic value as a work of art.

Boris Pavlovich Raisky enjoys moving in St Petersburg’s elegant cir-cles, but the bustle of the capital proves too much, so he decides to visit his country estate, Malinovka. There he meets the dangerous freethinker Mark Volokhov, and a chain of events is set o that will lead to disappointment, confrontation and, ultimately, tragedy. Re-garded by its author as his best work, Malinovka Heights is Gon-charov’s crowning achievement as a novelist and a triumph of psy-chological insight. Here presented for the first time in unabridged form, Goncharov’s final novel deserves to be reassessed as one of the most important classics of nineteenth-century Russian literature.

WEYevgeny Zamyat in
We – an indictment of the Soviet Russia of Zamy-atin’s time and a precursor of the works of Orwell and the dystopian genre – takes place in a distant fu-ture, where humans are forced to submit their wills to the requirements of the state, under the rule of the all-powerful Benefactor, and dreams are regard-ed as a sign of mental illness. In a city of straight lines, protected by green walls and a glass dome, a spaceship is being built in order to spearhead the conquest of new planets. Its chief engineer, a man called D-503, keeps a journal of his life and activi-ties: to his mathematical mind everything seems to make sense and proceed as it should, until a chance encounter with a woman threatens to shatter the very foundations of the world he lives in.

THE GOVERNMENTinspector
Nikola i Gogol
The mayor and local ocials of a small provincial town in Russia have got it made: corruption is rife and they have all the power. Yet, when they learn that an undercover government inspector is about to make a visit, they face a mad dash to cover their tracks. Soon, the news that a suspicious person has recently arrived from St Petersburg and is staying in a local inn produces a series of events and misunder-standings that lead to a hilarious dénouement.
Often quoted as Russian literature’s greatest com-edy, The Government Inspector is a trenchant satire of the corruption, greed and stupidity of petty of-ficialdom, and the crowning achievement of Gogol’s skills as a playwright.

Alma Junior’s series of illustrated classics includes some of the greatest books ever written for younger readers, as well as new translations of unjustly neglected international works. Our aim is to give our list an international feel and oer young readers the opportunity to connect with other cul-tures and literatures – this applies not only to the titles we choose but also to the illustrators we commission – so that we can bring a bit of novelty into the canon of British children’s lit-erature. All Alma Junior Classics contain extra material for young readers, including a profile of the author, a section on the book, a list of characters, a glossary and a test-yourself quiz.
