OUTLINE• Introduction.• Why alloys?• Importance and uses of Alloys.• Types of Alloys• Properties of Alloys• Industrial application.• Other applications.• Conclusion• Reference
3
INTRODUCTION
What is an alloy?• Alloys are mixed of metal with other metal or non-metal in the
same group that are prepared by mixing of the metals in their molten state through physical processes.
4
INTRODUCTION
Preparation of alloys
• Alloys can be made by combining two or more metal elements while in a molten state or by bonding metal powders.• Made through physical processes. • Determining physical and chemical properties.
5
WHY ALLOYS?
The aim of making alloys:• To increase the hardness and strength of a metal.• To prevent corrosion or rusting.• To improve the appearance of metal surface.
6
IMPORTANCE AND USES OF ALLOYS
• Military, aircrafts, commercial, industrial, and manufacturing applications.• Industrial of making coins, turbines , pipes and blades.• Jewelry, and uses in structural materials• In automobile industrial.
7
TYPES OF ALLOYS
• Cast alloys • Bearing alloys• Corrosion-resisting Alloys• Super-Austenitic Stainless Steels Alloy (SASS Alloy)• High-Strength Corrosion-Resistant Alloys
8
PROPERTIES OF ALLOYS
• Strength
• Conduct electricity
• Durability
• Resistance of corrosion
• Ability to withstand heat
9
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
• Advantages:
• Low cast and density
• Good castability
• Low hardness
• Suitable for long span fpd’s
10
ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES
• Disadvantages:
• Discoloration• High CTE• May form internal oxides• Should not be cast in carbon crucible
