FAITHFUL NAVIGATOR’S MESSAGE –
Greetings Sir Knights,
This will be a very short note, since we have not
had a lot happening since the last letter.
We had a sparsely attended meeting on the 26th
of March – mainly due to the fact that a lot of
knights were attending a visitation for the
granddaughter of one of our own.
Our honor guard has been asked to have a
presence at a confirmation at St. Mary’s Catholic
Church in Moline.
Please plan on attending the next meeting,
which will be at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church on
June 5th. This will be our Spring Social event, so
bring your significant others and plan on having a
wonderful meal. Plan on showing up around 5:30
as Father Jack will be celebrating Mass with us in
the Church, and the social will begin directly
following the Mass.
Hope to see you there.

BLOOD PROGRAM CONTINUES GROWTH
at St. Pius X Parish under the guidance of Allouez
Council. The April 6th mobile at St. Pius yielded
63 units of blood counting whole blood and the
double reds donors. This success almost triples the
production since the Council again became
involved with the program.
It was rewarding to note the number of Knights
and family members who supported this last drive
including the Alongi's: Amanda, Jennifer, Linda
and Louie....what family involvement!! Also
donating were Jeff Barnes, Ed Bills, Josh
Brueggen, Richard Cervantes, Peter Dilulio, Mike
& Coleen Egan, James Grutsch, Jeff Hoskins, Pat
Kernan, Tom Maloney, Katherine Moens, Mike
Musick, Red Pearson, John Phillips, Cheryl
Richardson, Mike & Debra Roman, Vince
Santuccio, Jeff Schaecher, Carol Spalding, Jack &
LuAnn Swim and Ray Wells.
We have many other members of the Council
who donate at their work sites or at the blood
centers and we don't always know who they are
and how often they donate. Knights like Tom
Lawrence, Mike McKinney, Andy Olson and
Nancy and I are regular donors whose schedule
does not permit donating at St. Pius. I know I am
missing many and would like to know who you are
so your donations can be tallied and reported to the
credit of the Council. Please contact me at
[email protected] or give me a call at 309-
794-9085.
Finally, I would like to acknowledge Butch and
Gayle Santuccio for staffing the refreshment area
during the blood draw, Katherine Moen for her
support, Bob Pulford for the hall set up and Julie
Lawrence and the Ladies Auxiliary for some
delicious homemade treats. We could get used to
them!
Louie Alongi and I will continue working as co-
coordinators with the St. Pius Parish wide Blood
Program as a Round Table service to the Parish and
its Pastor, Msgr. Mark Merdian.

DEACON’S QUESTION BOX
Bodily Participation at Mass – Sitting
After the Penitential Rite, we all sit down. It
may come as a surprise but even this physical act
has meaning. Remembering that the bishop is the
spiritual leader of the diocese assisted in each local
church by the priest, we can look to the cathedral
for our first insight into sitting.
Sitting is the posture that is proper to the bishop.
The bishop has a specific place reserved to him
called the cathedra (chair). The word cathedral
means the place where the bishop’s chair is. The
bishop’s chair symbolizes his authority. Sitting on
the part of the bishop is a posture of authority for
the sake of teaching. Out of respect for this
authority, we wait and sit after the bishop.
In fact, in the ancient Church and up until the
end of the Middle Ages, the only chair in the
Cathedral (or in any local church) was the chair for
the bishop. The people did not sit. If you visit
ancient churches and cathedrals in Europe, you will
find that many of them still do not have pews or
chairs except for the bishop or the celebrant of the
Mass.
When we sit down for the readings, the posture
of being seated signifies attentive listening and a
readiness to be instructed. When you sit down
during Mass, remember that you're not sitting in
your living room. Sit up straight, quietly, and
reverently. It requires our will, our energy, and our
attention to listen carefully to the Sacred Scripture.
Our posture should reflect that interior attitude of
alertness; listening with the ear of the heart
Actually, this applies to all in the church; people
and celebrant. The Ceremonial of Bishops says
that "when the bishop is seated, if he is wearing
liturgical vestments, unless he is holding the
crozier, he should place his palms on his knees.”
Here's another principle to keep in mind: what is
legislated for the superior generally holds for the
subject as well. Try sitting that way: quietly,
prayerfully, and upright. If you're not holding a
book (or correcting small children), place your
hands on your knees, palms down. You'll see what
a difference it makes.

INSURANCE AGENT’S MESSAGE
Ask Eligible Men to Join
Today, I want to address the growth of the
Order. Membership growth is the fuel that keeps
this great fraternal engine running. All of our
charitable works at the council, state, national and
international level are thanks to our hard-working
members. And more members equals more charity.
We know that the membership blitz is a tried
and true way for councils to get more men to join.
We see these pushes often in March, in celebration
of Founder’s Day, and again in October. These
drives are successful because brother Knights have
increased visibility speaking or presenting during
and after Masses and at special events. We must
remember that we have a duty to ask each and
every Catholic gentleman to join our ranks for the
good of the Church, the community and the Order.
During the rest of the year, we often “forget” to
ask men to join and to bring their families into the
Knights of Columbus family. You probably know
an eligible Catholic man you could ask today.
What if the only reason he hasn’t joined is because
no one has asked him yet?
When telling a prospect about the strengths of
the Order, don’t forget our greatest fraternal
benefit: our insurance program. This is often a
“selling point” to a potential member who is on the
fence. Many members become Knights simply to
be able to buy coverage to protect their family.
Soon after, they realize the good our charitable
works do for their community, and they are proud
to be members.
As your professional Knights of Columbus
insurance agent, I look forward to helping us grow
in fraternity in any way that I can.

March 9, 2015 Jack Swan Grand Knight Knights of Columbus 319 Ridgeview Drive Sherrard, Illinois 61281 Dear Prospective Sponsor, Many of you already know who the Knights of Columbus are, some of you may even be a member of the Order, but for those who do not know, please allow this letter to introduce you to the Rock Island Allouez Council #658 of the Knights of Columbus and our Charity Golf Outing for which we are seeking your support. The Knights of Columbus is a service organization dedicated to helping those in need through our commitment to Charity, Unity, and Fraternity. Be it the support of seminarians to build leadership in our church, the many Community Activities that we do, such as Habitat for Humanity, Intellectual Disabilities Tootsie Roll Drive, Special Olympics, food collection and food pantry for those in need, Culture of Life Activities, or our Youth Activities such as Coats for Kids, the Knights of Columbus stand ready to help. Our membership continues to grow, giving us additional funds to help with all of these activities, and hands to help as well, but we need your support to raise even more funds to apply to the growing service needs of our community. We are proud to be Knights of Columbus and are always looking for ways to improve the lives of our Order and of our Community. Again this year we at the Allouez Council of Rock Island have teamed up with the St. Ambrose Council of Milan to hold an even larger Charitable Event to help fund the projects most dear to our hearts! We are having our 16th Annual Charity Golf Outing on June 13th at 1:00 PM at Highland Springs Golf Course in Rock Island. In order for this event to be successful, we need the support of Individuals and Businesses to graciously participate in this charity event. The amount of additional funding that we will be able to distribute to those in need will be determined by your generosity. There is probably nothing more to be said, other than we ask that you seriously consider this opportunity to help us help others. This is also a great opportunity for your company to receive the gratitude of and exposure to a good number of people, for we ask all of the participating golfers as well as our entire membership to utilize the services of our supporters.
