Vittorio Lampugnani’s urban design concept takes the city-block structure of the nine- teenth century as point of departure. Instead of the solid masonry walls with punctured fa- cades that often accompany this urban planning precept, Wiel Arets, the designer of the dominant high-rise and one of the six blocks, proposed a neutral, transparent building envelope (see p. 554). To afford passers-by and residents who live across from the building a bit of a domestic atmosphere despite the glazed facade, in cooperation with a facade firm, Arets’ office developed a solution in which curtains be- come a key design element. A reinterpreta- tion of the closed-cavity facade, these her- metically sealed, highly insulated elements are the result of an intensive series of tests: air from which moisture has been extracted is pumped through the interstitial space. Thus, in contrast to double-skin facades with vents admitting ambient air, here no dirt or dust can penetrate the elements, and condensation cannot form in the interstitial space. Accordingly, the glass surfaces lin- ing the interstitial space do not have to be cleaned, and the reflectance of the solar protection within it will remain intact for many years to come. Here, curtains with highly reflective aluminium vapour coating are employed for the first time as integrated solar shading and glare control. When the curtains are open, seen from the interior, de- spite a module thickness of about 300 mm, the facade seems like a thin membrane. As soon as the sun shines on the facade, the curtains close and the exterior appearance of the building is transformed. The Richti District borders Zurich’s centre to the north; once an industrial site, it now has 1200 residents, offices for 3000, and numer-ous shops and restaurants. The site is linked directly to the central station, and the con-nection to the nearby airport has been es-tablished by introducing new streetcar and bus lines. cade is glazed, in a figurative sense it has its origins in stone: in homage to the Barce-lona Pavilion and as a concession to the co-herence of the district’s structures, the onyx pattern printed on the glass gives the glazed curtain facade a haptical, monolithic quality and adds a new dimension to the interplay between the texture of the curtains and the reflections of the smooth glass skin: the lay-ers create a sense of depth. In addition to the facade, the textured sus-pended ceiling, replete with floral bas relief, is an important contribution to the sensual atmosphere of the interiors. Aside from func-tioning as acoustic ceiling, equipped with clipped-on copper pipes, it serves as radi-

ant cooling ceiling and is an integral compo-nent of the hybrid-cooling ceiling. Copper pipes in the interstitial space precondition the air and, consequently, also the respec-tive concrete decks – which constitute the thermally active layer – above them.
