70 Years of Preparing Christians to Think and Act Biblically

It started with 11 cents and a man called to fearlessly proclaim the Word of God and point people to Christ.

Approached by a major network to pioneer a coast-to-coast ministry, Donald Barnhouse, with the encouragement of Dr. C. Everett Koop, began the work that would eventually lead to the formation of Evangelical Foundation. In 1949, the first broadcast of The Bible Study Hour aired introducing Dr. Barnhouse’s

monumental study of the Epistle to the Romans, a series which ran its 455 messages for over a decade.

The ministry struggled as it attempted to continue after the passing of such a gifted, dynamic preacher, but in 1969 God in His providence brought Dr. James Boice to pick up the microphone and carry on the ministry of “making God’s Word plain to God’s people everywhere.”

Dr. Boice had the same passion for God’s Word and, like Dr. Barnhouse, an entrepreneurial spirit that helped bring the Word to people in pioneering ways. From broadcasting and publishing, to conferences like the historic Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology, Dr. Boice used his great gifts to promote the teachings of Scripture clearly reflected in the five solas of the Reformation.

It was James Boice’s recognition that American evangelicalism was experiencing a crisis and had generally capitulated to the “spirit of the age” that led to the re-branding as the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals in 1994.

The Alliance has never been the ministry of a single man, but rather is a coalition of many godly men, joining together to preach sound doctrine to the glory of God. It is also our many faithful members, men and women who seek to know the risen Christ more fully and share the Good News with those whom God has placed in their path. Through events, radio, podcasts, websites, devotionals, books and booklets, and various resources produced, Alliance members have a global impact that shares the Gospel and encourages and equips the Church.

What started with a charismatic teacher and 11 cents in actuality was begun with a call by God. A call to faithfully proclaim God’s Word against the encroaching darkness and for biblical reformation in the churches. 70 years later, by God’s grace and your support, we continue that work that is still so needed today.

Broadcasting2018 was a year of growth for Alliance Broadcasts. Coast-to-coast outlets of Family Radio were added in October, including daily broadcasts of Dr. Barnhouse & the Bible, and yet another weekly play of The Bible Study Hour. Online, both streaming and downloads of our two lead radio programs averaged a 15-22% increase over the previous year.

Alliance podcasts grew in influence as well. Mortification of Spin enjoyed a 10% increase over 2017, while its upstart “younger brother” Theology on the Go registered a 60% increase in both hits and unique listens year-to-year!

Off air, the Alliance completed work on the Reformed Bible Conference, an event hosted by Westminster Presbyterian Church, Lancaster, PA, spanning 21 years of teaching from many pioneers of the modern Reformation. Work will soon begin on new, never-before-broadcast Bible teaching by Donald Grey Barnhouse and audio from the historic Pensacola Theological Institute.

Ahead in 2019: Alliance Internet Radio, a new streaming platform featuring the best of our broadcasts, podcasts, and events.

Welcome Mark Daniels to the Alliance Team!Veteran radio/TV broadcaster Mark Daniels has joined the Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals team as director of broadcasting. Daniels served for 24 years as programming/marketing manager and talk show host for Salem Media Group’s WFIL/WNTP in Philadelphia and with other outlets over his 38 years on the air. Since 2003, Daniels has served as host for The Bible Study Hour and other Alliance programs.

As broadcasting is a core Alliance ministry, Mark joining the staff will have a tremendous impact! He brings decades of experience, exceptional skill sets, and most importantly a passion for the Gospel!

We look forward to hearing more of Mark on our broadcasts and seeing him at many Alliance events.

PublishingWhere We Went2018 was a productive year for the Alliance publishing. In February, P&R republished Only One Way: Christian Witness in an Age of Inclusion, a collection of essays championing the truth of the Gospel in our postmodern world from the 2005 Philadelphia Conference on Reformed Theology. In April, P&R released The Life of Moses by James Boice, an expositional study covering Exodus through Deuteronomy. Previously-unpublished, this work offers readers a practical, Gospel-centered approach to the Pentateuch.

In September, Midway Presbyterian Church released On Reforming Worship, a collection of messages taken from the Reformation Worship Conference, edited by David Hall and Jonathan Master. The Alliance released a title the following month: Entering God’s Rest: The Sabbath from Genesis to Revelation (And What It Means for You). In this short book, pastor Ken Golden surveys what God has said—and what He has not said—about Sabbath and rest in the Scriptures. Ken encourages readers to think critically about their own view of Sunday, while extending grace to brothers and sisters who think differently.

Where We’re GoingThis year the Alliance looks forward to the release of Our Ancient Foe: Satan’s History, Activity, and Ultimate Demise (ed. Ronald Kohl). Inspired by the 2017 Quakertown Conference on Reformed Theology, Our Ancient Foe brings Christians face-to-face with their enemy, and reminds us of the victory guaranteed in Christ. Contributors include Kent Hughes, Tom Nettles, Joel Beeke, and Sinclair Ferguson.

The Alliance has recovered the publishing rights to both Our Sovereign God and Our Savior God (Baker), two collections from PCRT conference addresses dating from 1974 to 1979. They are currently in review, with the hope of funding and republishing. Other forthcoming projects include a new edition of Turning Back the Darkness (Rick Phillips) and Forever Settled, a collection of essays from the International Council on BiblicaI Inerrancy.

Event SpotlightThe Blue Ridge Institute for Theological Education (BRITE) serves the church in all branches of Protestant Christianity by preparing its students to be more faithful and effective church members and followers of the Lord Jesus Christ.

A foundational desire for BRITE is that it would further the health of the church by cultivating biblically, historically, theologically-rooted churchmen and women who will take what they have learned in classroom, in internship, and in mentoring, and inculcate those same priorities in the life of their own local congregation—thus further bolstering the health and vitality of the Church of the Lord Jesus Christ for generations to come.

The Alliance shares this vision and partners with BRITE to bring rigorous biblical and theological training to the local church by promoting and supporting the classes offered through the institute.
