Children will visit Exploration Stations to feel and play with an assortment of materials including mud, jello, slime, bubbles, and shaving cream. We will then meet some messy guests that also like to play in the mud—worms! The fun will continue with a finger painting craft and nature walk. Limited to 8 children with ONE adult per child. Does your child dream of being a veterinarian? Send them to APEC to learn the basics of animal care. All animals need food, water and shelter to survive, but pets sometimes need medical care too. Enjoy pretend play examining animals, look at animal x-rays, groom the rabbits, and help take care of the turtles. Students will love meeting the live animal guests. Limited to 8 participants

Animal Care Series These dynamic, experience-based classes are designed to be taken again and

again. Come train with our animal ambassadors this month!

Animal Care Trainee | Ages 8-10* | $24 Sunday, May 17 10:00-12:00 Saturday, June 13 10:00-12:00 Would you like to help us care for APEC’s animals? This program introduces children to the unique responsibility of being an animal caretaker. Participants will learn about the needs of our animal ambassadors and gain hands-on experience in feeding, brushing, and cleaning them. *Participation in a prior Animal Care Trainee program is a must in order to qualify for Advanced Animal Care Trainee, students over the age of 10 may be able to take this class under special circumstances.

Advanced Animal Care Trainee | Ages 10-13* | $26 Saturday, June 6 10:00-12:00 Have you ever wondered what your pet was thinking, or whether the fly on the wall could feel emotions like we do? We’re taking animal care to a whole new level as we study APEC animals’ species specific behavior. We’ll practice techniques that help us better connect to birds, reptiles, and small mammals, and give their lives more purpose and joy. Learn more about animal needs that go beyond water, food, and a clean shelter. Help care for our animals and all their quirks by learning how to train them, engage them, and supplement their diets. Participate in a fun craft that will be used for the enrichment of one of our many animal ambassadors! *Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Animal Care Trainee program is a must in order to qualify for Advanced Animal Care Trainee.)

Animal Science Series

Vet Tech 101 | Ages 10-13* | $28 Thursday, April 16 10:00-12:00 (DURING NYC PUBLIC SCHOOL SPRING RECESS!) Saturday, May 23 10:00-12:00 Come join us to learn about animal health basics. During the class we will practice conducting animal check-ups, handling live animals, and studying animal anatomy. Students can learn the specialized skills needed to keep our animals healthy at this program. From eye examinations to checking teeth, gums, and ears, our Vet Tech students will learn the ins and outs of

keeping some of the most common pet animals in peak medical condition. Limited to 8 participants. *Because participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201, students over the age of 13 may be able to take Vet Tech 101 under special circumstances (Contact Zachary at Ext. 204 for further assistance).

Vet Tech 201 | Ages 11-15* | $32 Saturday, May 23 10:00-12:00 Come see and learn from a licensed Veterinary Technician as we delve deeper into the science of animal care. Students will get to work with the Vet Tech one on one using tools and techniques at a more advanced level than in Vet Tech 101. From testing heart rates and examining animal x-rays or bones, to using stethoscopes and viewing slides, all our Vet Tech 201 students will learn the invaluable techniques for in-depth animal examination. *Prerequisite Requirement: Participation in a prior Vet Tech 101 program is a must in order to qualify for Vet Tech 201, unless you are an APEC Volunteer.

Living Lab | Ages 7-10 | $21 per class Join us as we explore the question what does it mean to be alive. Each session will include experiments with the help of live animals or plants. It’s Baby Season!

Saturday, April 4 11:00-12:30 PM

Spring is the season for babies! Join us as we

learn about how animals prepare for the birth

of their babies and care for them until they are

independent. We will explore the forest and try

to find evidence of baby season (eggs, nests, or

even actual babies)!

Nature Senses Saturday, May 30 11:00 – 12:30 PM There is so much more to nature than what we see.

In this class we will explore nature with our other

senses. We will go on a long walk on the Alley Pond

trails and enjoy many sensory activities. During our

outdoor adventure we will use nature to inspire art,

music, and poetry. Throughout this program we will

develop a further understanding of the connection

between the human and natural world.

Little Cooks | Ages 5-7 | $22 per class For those little ones who just can’t wait to be a Young Chef. APEC Little Cooks will have fun making a delicious snack to compliment what they’ve learned. Fruit Bowl Painting Saturday, April 18 11:30 – 12:30 PM

If you love art and you love fruit, then this is

the program for you! We will be making and

enjoying a delicious and healthy fruit salad

together. Before we slice it up and enjoy it, we

will each create a fruit bowl painting. Join us

for the yummy fun!

Vegan Tacos Saturday, May 16 11:30 – 12:30 PM

Who doesn't love tacos?! We are going to

make some delicious vegan tacos together.

We'll learn about the benefits of incorporating

plant-based foods into our diet and how it

helps the earth - all while making a delicious

meal!

Tea Party with Yoga & Guided Meditation Saturday, June 20 11:30 – 12:30 PM

You are invited to our tea party! Please join us

as we partake in yoga and meditation.

Afterwards, we will cozy up with some warm

tea and snacks. During our party we will learn a

little about tea and meet a fluffy rabbit!

Missed or Cancelled Classes: Program fees are non-refundable. No refunds or credits will be given for any missed programs. If APEC is notified within one week that the registrant cannot attend or if APEC cancels the program, a registration credit the amount of the class will be applied to you account to be used for future APEC program registration. Make-Up Policy: There are NO make-up classes for single session programs.

Think Tank | Ages 7-10 | $23 per class Children will explore their inner scientist with this fun filled, hands-on experimenting class. They will be challenged to form a hypothesis based on the materials of the day, then draw conclusions based on their experimentation.

Birding Extravaganza Sunday, June 14 11:00-12:30 PM

Birds are one of the most special creatures on

this planet. Please join us as we participate in

hands-on birding fun! We'll look for birds in

the park using binoculars, make our own

nests, and experiment on bird behavior using

our friendly APEC birds.

Plant Based Tie Dye | $23 Saturday, June 27 12:00-1:30 PM

Get messy and creative with us! We will be

tie-dying t-shirts together without the

chemicals of store bought dyes. We will be

using plant-based ingredients for eco-friendly

tie-dye fun.

A TOAST TO SPRING! AN EVENING OF ART &

Enjoy a glass of organic wine and tapas as you toast Spring

and paint your own wine glass. Extra wine glasses will be

available for to purchase to paint if you want to take home a

pair. Workshop includes our lively instructor, Masa Kitani,

Owl Prowl Night Hike | $5

We are excited to welcome Tesla, the Screech Owl, to our new location for a night hike. The program will

kick off with an indoor presentation led by Biologist & Ranger Eric Powers. Learn how to identify owls by

sight and sound, and how to attract these beneficial birds to your own backyard. Then we’ll head out for a

very quiet guided night walk in search of owls and other nighttime wildlife using a fun, safe, and easy method. Ranger Eric will teach you how to develop

your own night vision – flashlights are not needed. Hot cocoa and refreshments included. For more

There’s nothing better than spending summertime in the beautiful outdoors and that’s just what you should look forward to as a Wildlife Biology Club member! This program will emphasize the wildlife that call Alley Pond Park, and New York as a whole, their home. Team-building activities, games, hikes, and taking biological surveys will all be a part of this exciting new program (Session 1 will include a full day spent at the Alley Pond Adventure Course!). Each day, members should bring a nut-free snack, a bottle of water, a head covering, and apply sunscreen and insect repellant prior to drop off.

Build your background knowledge of animal

development while learning about mammals,

birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Explore the unique

differences of these animal groups and gain a

better understanding of critter classification.

Program will include a nature walk (rain or shine)

and live animal demonstrations. A light breakfast

of freshly baked muffins, fresh fruit, coffee and

juice will also be provided.

Keep Moving! Dance Your Way to Fitness Thursdays, April 2, 9, 16, 30 and May 7 $75 for the series of $18 per class 6:00-7:00 PM

Join us each week as Ms. Anna (trained ballroom instructor) teaches us the basics of doing the Hustle, Salsa, ethnic dances and classic dance moves. We will dance our way to stay fit and active. Wear comfortable shoes and bring a bottle of water. No prior dance experience necessary.

Self Defense Seminar Friday, April 3 | $10 | 6:30-8:30 PM

This seminar will be an instruction on basic self defense from Coach Butch and Amanda Rinaldi. We will go over true to life scenarios and how to properly escape them. This segment will include both the psychological and physical aspects of self-defense. All funds will be donated to APEC.

Friends & Family CPR Training Friday, May 1 | $10 | 6:00-8:00 PM Adults and children 14 and up. This course, led by members of the Glen Oaks Volunteer Ambulance Corps, teaches this AHA training the lifesaving skills of adult hands-only CPR and is for people who want to learn CPR but do not need a CPR course completion card to meet a job requirement. This is ideal for new parents, grandparents, babysitters and others interested in learning how to save a life. Each student will receive a take home workbook for future reference. Free childcare provided upon request. Funds raised from this program will go towards children’s programming and animal care.

Guided Ecology Walk Sunday, May 3 | $5 | 10:00-11:30 AM All ages welcome (children must be accompanied by adult) Enjoy a relaxed, informative walk along our woodland trails with your friendly, qualified guide. Wear comfortable shoes and bring binoculars if you have them. This walk will cover some rough terrain and is not suitable for persons with limited mobility.

Spring Bird Walk for Beginners Saturday, May 23 | FREE | 9:15-12:00 PM Ages 8 and up (children must be accompanied by adult) Walk through Alley Pond Park’s densely wooded dirt trails, accompanied by Nancy and Louis Tognan from Queens County Bird Club. Try to spot our various species of birds – both the year-round residents and the multitudes of warblers migrating through at this time. Listen for their songs. Learn to use binoculars and a field guide. This walk will cover some rough terrain and is not suitable for persons with limited mobility.

Chef Mom Reggae Wine Notes 101 Thursdays, May 14 & 21 | $40 | 7:00-9:00 PM Adults 21+ What really is wine? What are the styles and types of wine? What food pairs well with wine? Intrigued? Come experience the single most important step towards improving your palate with our Wine Steward Chef Mom, while rocking to the beats of Jamaican Reggae Notes. We will enjoy 10 major types of wine over the course of 2 workshop evenings : from Chardonnay to Tempranillo to Cabernet Sauvignon to Ugni Blanc, just to name a few, all paired with selected Jamaican cuisine. Thai Cooking Demonstration Tuesday, May 19 | $15 | 7:00-9:00 PM Join Penn Hongthong as she shows you how to make simple, healthy and tasty Thai cooking. Learn how to prepare basil tofu with mushroom and bok choy, ginger pork with red and yellow bell peppers and pineapple red curry chicken. Penn is the author of Simple Laotian Cooking and Healthy Lao Cuisine. The food will be gluten free. There will be tasting after the demonstration. This sweet-tasting drink has been consumed for centuries. Join local beekeeper, hobby home brewer and co-founder of Astor Apiaries, Nick Hoefly, to learn the process of turning honey into mead. Come storm the castle and stop by our Medieval Selfie Station. A brief discussion on the basics of simple home brewing will kick off the workshop and then participants will be able to experience honey and mead tasting. Following the tasting, Nick will demonstrate and prepare a gallon of mead starter and answer any questions. Students will leave with a handout outlining the information discussed in the class and some recipes. This class is geared toward beginner homebrewers with little to no experience brewing. Fluid Artistry Workshop Tuesday, June 23 | $40 | 7:00-9:00 PM Join our host, Jammin’ Canvas artist Cheryl, as she introduces you to “fluid artistry”. Together you will mix acrylic paints with additives and watch the magic happen as you utilize one of the many fun techniques. You will not use any brushes! So much fun creating your masterpiece - unleash your inner creativity and watch it flow. Includes instruction and all materials. Please bring smock as acrylic paints will be used.

Earth Day

Ramble

Join Marie Viljoen, the author of Forage Harvest, Feast, on an Earth Day Ramble. We will learn identify the wide array of edible plants that grow at Alley Pond Park, encountering delicious edible weeds like garlic mustard and Japanese knotweed. Marie will also teach us about the indigenous plants that could and should be part of a tradition of regional American cuisine. After the walk we will share a delicious, invasivore picnic snack.
