HOW MUCH AND HOW OFTEN

————————————————-

Goldfish and Koi do not have a true stomach, they just nibble on food all the time and it is constantly being digested. Feeding a lot all at once can cause a lot of the food to not be digested fully and the excess nutrients pass into the water to contribute to algae blooms. Several small feedings of what the fish consume in two or three minutes is better for fish and pond health than one large feeding a day.

————————————————-

WHY USE POND SALT????

————————————————-

The use of pond salt is recommended in ponds with plants at a rate of 1 POUND PER 100 GALLONS OF WATER (make a note of it!) In outdoor Koi only ponds ( no plants) recommended to maintain a salt level minimum of 2# per 100 gallons. The salt will allow algae growth while the pond fish will have a little heavier slime coat to ward off para-sites. Many of the parasites

Can be eliminated from fish with a salt dip. The recommended dose is a rate of 3 CUPS OF SALT PER 5 GALLONS OF POND WATER. Dip the suffering Koi for 5-7 minutes every other day for three treatments. NEVER USE A FORMALIN BASED PRODUCT WITH SALT.

Pond salt can also be used to remove and destroy algae growth on water-falls and rocks. Just shut-off the waterfalls and sprinkle a cup or two of salt on the waterfall, let stand for 20-30 minutes and then turn the water-fall back on. DO NOT USE TABLE SALT ( IT CONTAINS IODINE) or any salt that has YPS ( anti-caking product) in your pond or for dip-ping!!!. Doing this will be a hazard to the fish and plant life.

This information borrowed from EPONDS. Thanks Kip for the info!

FISH FEEDING

——————————————

All fish need food of course and new ponds have very little to offer, so it is important to get the right food for the fish you have. As the ponds age over the years, goldfish and small Koi can sometimes find enough food to survive for a week or two if you go on vacation, but larger fish will probably still need to be regularly fed. Fish that are not fed supplemental foods will tend to not grow as much and are more prone to dying over the win-ter, as they don’t have enough fat stored to survive the entire winter.

——————————————

WARM WATER FOOD VERSUS COLD WATER FOOD.

——————————————

When the water is warm, fish need a food with higher protein levels, so they can use it to grow bigger. In colder water, fish use foods higher in carbohydrates to generate energy to fight pests and to store fat. Foods higher in plant material, like wheat germ are used when the water is between 50 and 65 de-grees. The fish food label will tell you in which water temperature range it should be used. If it does-n’t, then it is a warm water food that should be used when the water temperature is above 70 degrees.
