On behalf of the entire Allegheny air traffic workforce I would like to welcome you

to the Allegheny Air Traffic Control Tower. You have the opportunity to workwith a dedicated group of controllers and support staff. Our workforce is friendly,

professional, and effective.

Our initial goal is to provide you with the administrative support and training tools

and guidance that will make you comfortable and familiar with our daily operations.

Congratulations on your employment with the FAA and your assignment to Allegheny (AGC) Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT). AGC ATCT is a VFR, General Aviation, level 5 tower, located in southwestern Pennsylvania, about 7 miles SSE of Pittsburgh.

NATCA AGC is the local union representing the controllers at AGC ATCT. NATCA AGC enjoys a great working relationship with local management, and this provides an enjoyable working environment for all employees. NATCA AGC has a strong presence in the workplace and a high membership rate of over 85%.

Allegheny Tower: Yesterday and Today

Allegheny County Airport (AGC), located in West Mifflin, PA is the seventh busiest airport in Pennsylvania. AGC is the largest general aviation airport in western Pennsylvania. The number of operations - 75,000 takeoffs and landings per year - outpaces several airports that handle commercial or scheduled flights in Pennsylvania.

The Allegheny County Airport serves as the primary FAA designated reliever airport for Pittsburgh International Airport. In this role the airport supports a high volume of business and corporate-related activity. Many of the area's largest corporations base their aircraft at the airport. The businesses routinely charter aircraft, ship and receive supplies and products, and have customers and suppliers who arrive routinely via the airport. AGC services lifeguard and medical emergency traffic.

AGC was dedicated on September 11, 1931, and at the time was the nation's third largest and first with "hard surface" runways. The art deco terminal, a historic landmark, was the main passenger airport for the area until 1952. Amongst the big screen moments in which the historic landmark is featured are the 2014 STARZ series The Chair’(Episode 107; Chris Moore, Ben Affleck, Matt Damon), the 2004 movie The Mothman Prophecies’(Richard Gere), and the 1986 movie Gung Ho’ (Michael Keaton).

AGC sits 1,252 feet above sea level and is one of the highest points in Allegheny County. AGC is located near shopping centers, as well as only about 6 miles from downtown Pittsburgh. The Allegheny County Airport Authority (ACAA) oversees the operations at AGC as well as the Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). A seven-member board governs the ACAA.

Our Air Traffic Control Tower is a level 5 facility in the Eastern Service Area and one of the very few VFR Control Towers. Our Airspace is approximately a 4.1 nautical mile diameter circle at or below 3800 feet. We fall under Pittsburgh approach.

****Katherine Walther joined the FAA in 1999 as an air traffic controller in Peoria, Illinois (PIA) and then moved to Clarksburg, West Virginia (CKB). Subsequently, she served as a supervisor for 4 years at Allegheny Tower (AGC), where she is currently the Air Traffic Manager.

****Matthew Bonidie joined the FAA in 1998 as an air traffic controller at New York Tracon (N90). Following his service at Erie Tower & Approach (ERI) he moved to Cleveland Tower (CLE). In 2014 he transferred to Allegheny Tower (AGC ATCT) and since November 2015 has taken on the duties of Front Line Manager and Operational Supervisor. Prior to his FAA career, Matthew proudly served 7 years in the U.S. Army. He is married and the father of 3 children.

Policies

Hours of Duty

The facility operates 24 hours a day, 365 days per year.

Parking

Ample parking is available. Vehicles must display parking passes. See the Air Traffic

administrative assistant to update your annual parking pass.

Security

The facility is a secure location. Firearms are forbidden. If your vehicle

contains a weapon, park outside of the fence line.

Building Access

Access to be building is controlled by personalized access cards. You will be issued

an access card while you are checking in.

Guests and Visitors

New employees are welcome to bring family and guests to the facility to see their

workplace.

Cell Phones

Cell phones must be turned off at all times in the control tower.

Profile Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh is the second largest city in Pennsylvania and the county seat of Allegheny County. Nationally, it is the 20th largest urban area in the United States. The population of the city in 2014 was 305,842, while that of the seven-county metropolitan area stood at 2,659,937. Pittsburgh is known locally as "the City of Bridges" and "the Steel City" for its many bridges and its former steel manufacturing base. Pittsburghers take great pride in their blue collar roots and love supporting their professional sports teams, the Steelers, Pirates and Penguins.

While the city is historically known for its steel industry, today its economy is largely based on healthcare, education, technology, robotics, and financial services. Modern Pittsburgh is economically strong. The housing market is relatively stable despite a national subprime mortgage crisis, and Pittsburgh added jobs in 2008 even as the national economy entered a significant jobs recession.

Major publications often note Pittsburgh's high livability compared to other American cities, with the city claiming the top overall spot in the United States in recent "most livable city" lists by Places Rated Almanac, Forbes, and The Economist. A 2013 ranking of "America's Smartest Cities" from Movoto put Pittsburgh in the number one spot out of the 100 most populous U.S. cities (Universities include: University of Pittsburgh, Carnegie Mellon University, Duquesne University, Chatham University, and Carlow). In 2012, National Geographic named Pittsburgh one of the best worldwide travel destinations.

Getting to Allegheny Tower

The Allegheny County Airport is located less than 10 miles southeast ofdowntown Pittsburgh. This map provides a general orientation to the location of the airport.

The airport property is adjacent to Lebanon Church Road, which runs parallel to the airport.

Call the facility at 412.461.4388 during working hours if you have any problems.

From the NorthI-79 South to I-279 South to PittsburghI-279 South to Exit 2A - Veterans Bridge, 579 South and follow signs to the Liberty Bridge and go through the Liberty Tunnel. At the tunnel's end, follow signs to Route 51 South (towards Uniontown, Saw Mill Run Blvd.). While on Rt. 51 look for the following landmarks on the right-hand side (Kentucky Fried Chicken, Eat N’ Park restaurant, CVS) and left-hand side (Panda Palace). After you pass these 4 landmarks, you will come to the crest of a hill and see signs for PA 885 and McKeesport/Allegheny County Airport/Lebanon-Church Road. Take this exit onto Lebanon-Church Road. At the sixth light, turn left into the Allegheny County Airport

From the SouthI-79 North to I-70 EastI-70 East to Exit 46B toward Pittsburgh (Route 51 North)Follow Route 51 approximately 18 miles and take the West Mifflin/McKeesport exit, marked by an airport sign. That exit takes you to Lebanon Church Road. Entrance to the Allegheny County Airport is on the left.

From the East (Philadelphia, PA)Take I-76 West (PA Turnpike) to Exit 67 toward Irwin/McKeesport. Merge onto PA-30W toward Pittsburgh, after 3.6 miles, turn left onto Lincoln Way. After 6.2 miles, turn slight left onto 5th Ave/PA-148 and cross McKeesport Duquesne Bridge to get onto PA-837S. After 3.5 miles turn right onto Lebanon School Road, turns into Phillip Murray Rd, then take slight right onto Camp Hollow Rd - cross over Lebanon Church Rd, at the light to enter Allegheny County Airport.

OR - From Monroeville Turnpike exitTake Business 22 West to PA Route 48 South, Mosside Boulevard and travel about five miles.Turn Right onto Route 30W and travel about two miles to take left onto Broad St and right onto Crooked Run Rd. After 1 mile, turn slight left onto PA-148 (5th Ave) and cross McKeesport Duquesne Bridge to get onto PA-837S. After 3.5 miles turn right onto Lebanon School Road, turns into Phillip Murray Rd, then take slight right onto Camp Hollow Rd - cross over Lebanon Church Rd, at the light to enter Allegheny County Airport.
