The Year of Saint Luke04.09.16.

23rd Sunday of the Year (Sunday Readings: of year C ::: Weekdays of year 11 ::: Breviary: Week iii)

Scripture: Wisdom 9:13-18Psalm 89

R/. O Lord, you have been our refugeFrom one generation to the next

You turn men back into dust and say:‘Go back, sons of men.’To your eyes a thousand years are like /

yesterday, come and gone,no more than a watch in the night.

You sweep men away like a dream, like grass which springs up in the morning. In the morning it springs up and flowers;by evening it withers and fades.

Make us know the shortness of our lifethat we may gain wisdom of heart.Lord, relent! Is your anger for ever?Show pity to your servants.

In the morning, fill us with your love;we shall exult and rejoice all our days.Let the favour of the Lord be upon us,Give success to the work of our hands.

Philemon 9 – 10, 12 – 17.Luke 14: 25 – 33.

Intercession : Lord hear usResponse : Lord graciously hear us

To escape from the worries of everyday life, William joined a religious order where all the members took a vow of silence. On only one day each year were the members allowed to speak, and then they could each say only two words. After he had been in the order for a year, Brother William was brought to the Abbot’s study.“You are permitted to say two words only. Do you understand?”Brother William nodded.“Do you wish to speak?”He nodded again.“Then what are your two words?”“More food.”Another year went by and again he was brought to the Abbot’s study.“Do you wish to speak?”Nod.“What are your two words?”“More blankets.”The third year went by and he was brought to the Abbot again.“Do you wish to speak?”Nod.“I quit”“It’s a good thing too,” said the Abbot. “You’ve done nothing but complain ever since you got here.”

Happy birthday wishes go to Monica Pugsley, who is celebrating her 101st birthday.  We all hope that you have a wonderful time.

Farewell and thank you Father Doyle

This week, Michael leaves All Saints to take up his first appointment as a Parish Priest. This will be for him a step into the unknown, but the words of Jesus speaks to all when he first said “leave all behind and come and follow me”.

Michael has done this, but the Lord wants more from him, “get into the boat and head out from the safety of the shore to deeper uncharted waters”. That will take courage!

Michael, thank you for your time among us, for the joys and sorrows we’ve shared, Blessings to you Son, - “Daddy”.

DOES CARE OF THE DYING MEAN RATIONING MERCY?

During this Year of Mercy, Pope Francis has constantly reminded us of the Corporal Works of Mercy. One of these is caring for those who are sick, and all that implies in an age of extraordinary medical advances. In the light of this, and in view of the increasingly controversial issues surrounding ‘end of life decisions’ ,

Baroness Finlay of Llandaff has been invited to St. David’s Cathedral to give an important talk on the subject of Palliative Care. Her talk will be entitled “Does Care of the Dying mean Rationing Mercy”.

Ilora Finlay is a Professor of Palliative Care at Cardiff University and a practising consultant at the Velindre Cancer Hospital in the city. She is a cross bench member of the House of Lords and Chair of Trustees of the National Council for Palliative Care. She is well known for her outstanding work particularly in the field of care for those patients living with cancer. Her talk will cover many areas including: patients and doctors; the control of pain; responsibility for decision making; necessary information; withholding and withdrawing treatment; end of life decisions.

The talk will take place at 1.15pm on Wednesday 14 September in the Mostyn Room at St. David’s Cathedral. It will be of particular value to patients and their relatives and carers, hospital chaplains and those who visit the sick. Although admission is free, it is expected that there will be a big demand for places. If you would like a ticket, please email [email protected] so that places may be allocated on a first come first served basis.
