Clearly a violation of the Versailles Treaty.

The Allies do nothing.

1936: Hitler takes control of the Rhineland* and begins to rebuild the industry there.

This is also a violation of the Versailles Treaty. The Allies do nothing.

*The Rhineland was a demilitarized zone – meant to buffer France from Germany. It is also a heavily industrialized area…good for military hardware production.

Appeasement1938: Hitler annexes the Sudetenland from Czechoslovakia- (the bordering territory between Czechoslovakia and Germany)

The Sudetenland, filled with ethnic Germans, is a heavy industrial and military region.

Germany was taking lands and re-arming! So Britain, one of the Allies, finally says it must be time to…

Neville Chamberlain was the British Prime Minister before WW2.

Like many in Britain who had lived through World War I, he was determined to avoid another war.

He traveled to Munich for talks with Hitler in 1938 and signed a treaty with Hitler: Britain and France accepted the German takeover of the Sudetenland.

Historically, Chamberlain is most-remembered for the policy of appeasement.

…talk!

One man saw Hitler as the brutal leader he was. This man told Britain that

when it came to Hitler:

"You were given the choice between war and dishonor.

You chose dishonor…

…and you will have war."

“An appeaser is one who feeds a crocodile, hoping it will eat him last.”- Winston Churchill

Meanwhile, Joseph Stalin (USSR dictator) and Hitler sign the Soviet/Nazi Non-Aggression Pact

Winston Churchill, member of the British government, warned the free world about appeasing Hitler.

He warned against German rearmament.

He was an optimist and inspiring speaker.

He would serve as Prime Minister during WW2, and lead Britain through it’s darkest hours.

Time passes, and Germany takes the rest of Czechoslovakia.

Consider this: Hitler has now taken Rhineland, Sudetenland, Austria and Czechoslovakia, all without firing a shot!

England issues an ultimatum for Germany to cease taking territory…
