The Missouri Chaper of ASTA is again sponsoring the Missouri All-State Orchesra. This extraordinary ensemblewill rehearse and perform at the annral Mssouri Music Erlucators Association Conference, January 23-26,2008, atTan-Tar-A Resort, Osage Beach-

The conductor of the 2008 All-State Orclrestra will be Dr. Paul C. Phinips, from Southern Methodist Univenity. The2008 All-State Orchesua will perform: Bratrms: Academic Festival Overhre, Mussorgsky: Night on Bald Mountain,and John Cheetbam: Missouri River Songs and Dances (MoASTA commission being premiered at Tan-Tar-A)

The ardition process will follow these procedures:

1. String auditions rvill take place at the University of Missouri at Columbia, Memorial Union. on Saturday.December l,2OO7. All students auditioning must be accompanied by a certified representative from theirschool (teacher or administrator) at registration and throughout the audition process.

2. All auditions will be bllnd. *" pnels ofjudges will be partitioned from the auditioning students.3 . The audition will consist of required scale and orchestral excerpts only. No solo will be required for the

auditior This year required audition material is "Set M' of scales and orchestral excerpts. The requiredscales and orchestral excerpts are included in this mailing.

4. There rvill be no callbacts for any instrument. Tbe violin auditions will be in two parts, with studentsplaying the required scales and one excerpt for one panel ofjudges and proceeding to a second room toplay the remaining excerpts for a second panel ofjudges. Students will be assigned an audition number atregistration. Registration rvill begin at7:30 a.m. in the front foyer of the WZZOU Mernorial Union.Auditions rvill begin at 8:15 a.m. and will be guided by the following suggested registration schedule basedupon distance 6aveled:

7:30- 9:00 a.m. Central Missouri9:00- 10:30 a.m. St. Louis Areal0:30-noon Kansas City AreaNoon-l:0Op.m. Springfield, Southwest Missouril:00-2:30 p.rn Northrvest, Northeast. and Southeast Missouri

5. Registration for the ASO auditions is online. Snrdents should access the MoASTA lvebsite atwww.moastaweb.com and go to the ab for All-State Orchestra where the form for All-State AuditionRegistration is located. Students should complete the information requested and zubmit the formelectronically.

6. Students rnust print the online registration form and obtain the necessary sigrraftres before bringing theform to the audition.

7. Students must have the application form complete r.vith signanres and the $20.00 fee in order to register.8. The last day for online regishation is Wednesday, Nolember 28,2ffii.9. Per MSHSAA rules, students must be accompanied by a certilied representative from their school (NOT

just their school distric|. Teachers or school representatives with large numbers of students may opt toprepare a written list of all their students and sigriust that list, instead of each application fonn at theregistration table.

10. Results will be announced the evening of the auditions in the Commons area of the Memorial Union and onthe MoASTA website. The student or teacher should pick music folders up that svsning. Pleaseremember, the ASO audition process is an allday event.

This year, the repertoire clrcsen for the 2008 Missouri All-State Orchesha requires both harp and piano. MoASTA will select theharpi$ and piani* for the All-State Orchestra based on ta@ auditions. This-letter provides detaiis regarding the ardition process.Here are the pertinent details about the All-State Orrchestra:

* The All-State Orchestra will rehearse and perform as part of the 2008 MMEA Conference atTan-Tar'A Omge Beaclr, MO, from Wednesday evening, January 23 until Saturday, January 26.

The following is an explanation of requirements for a sfudent to audition for and be accepted intothe Missouri All-State Orchestra.

The applicant's school must be a member of MSHSAA.MSHSAA rules state that-to be eligible to audition for and participate in an All-Stateensemble, a student must be a member of a corresponding High S"ltool performinggroup' if one exists. (Stti"g players must be a member of*t"it High School Orchestraand winds, brass, and percussion players must be a member of thei-r High School Band orOrchestra, if one exists.)MSHSAA Bylaw #103 states, "No studen! team or activities group shall be permitted toparticipate in interscholastic events without being accompani"d *il supervised by amember of the school faculty or adminisfiative staff."Applicants must be in grades 9-12.Applicants must bring the completed audition form and non-refrrndable $20.00 auditionfee to the audition. ALL-STATE ORCIIESTRA AIJDITIONS

Registration for auditions for the Missouri All-State Orchestra will begin at 7:30 a.m.Auditions begin at 8:15 a.m.Registration will close at 2:30 p.m.All auditions will be blind. The judges will be partitioned from the student.There are to be no callbacks for any instrument.
