THE GREAT VIGIL OF EASTER April 20th, 2019

SERVICE OF HOLY EUCHARIST AND BAPTISM The service begins outside in silent darkness. All are welcome to gather outside the South doors or in the narthex.

The Service of the Light Greeting Robert+ Dear friends in Christ, on this most holy night, when our Lord Jesus Christ passed from

death to life, the Church invites her children throughout the world to come together in vigil and prayer. This is the Passover of the Lord. We remember his death and resurrection by hearing his word and celebrating his mysteries; we are confident that we shall share his victory over death and live with him for ever in God.

The celebrant may say the following prayer. Blessing of the Fire

Robert+ Let us pray. Father, we share in the light of your glory through your Son, the light of the world. Sanctify this new fire, and inflame us with new hope. Purify our minds by this Easter celebration and bring us one day to the feast of eternal light. We ask this through Christ our Lord.

All Amen.

The celebrant lights the candle from the new fire, saying, Robert+ May the light of Christ, rising in glory, dispel the darkness of our hearts and minds.

Robert+/Bev+ The light of Christ. (x3) All Thanks be to God.

Other candles and lamps in the church may now be lighted. The paschal candle is placed in its stand in the middle of the sanctuary or near the lectern. The deacon, or other person appointed, standing near the candle, sings or says the Exsultet.

The Exultet Leah Arvidsson, cantor Rejoice, heavenly powers! Sing, choirs of angels! Exult, all creation around God’s throne! Jesus Christ, our King, is risen! Sound the trumpet of salvation!

Rejoice, O earth, in shining splendour, radiant in the brightness of your King! Christ has conquered! Glory fills you! Darkness vanishes for ever!

Rejoice, O Mother Church! Exult in glory! The risen Saviour shines upon you! Let this place resound with joy, echoing the mighty song of all God’s people!

Cantor Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. All It is right to give our thanks and praise.

Cantor It is truly right that with full hearts and minds and voices we should praise the unseen God, the all-powerful Father, and his only Son, our Lord Jesus Christ. For Christ has ransomed us with his blood, and paid for us the price of Adam’s sin to our eternal Father!

This is our Passover feast, when Christ, the true Lamb, is slain, whose blood consecrates the homes of all believers.

This is the night when first you saved our forebears: you freed the people of Israel from their slavery and led them dry-shod through the sea.

This is the night when Christians everywhere, washed clean of sin and freed from all defilement, are restored to grace and grow together in holiness.

This is the night when Jesus Christ broke the chains of death and rose triumphant from the grave.

Father, how wonderful your care for us! How boundless your merciful love! To ransom a slave you gave away your Son.

The power of this holy night dispels all evil, washes guilt away, restores lost innocence, brings mourners joy.

Night truly blessed when heaven is wedded to earth and we are reconciled with God!

Therefore, heavenly Father, in the joy of this night, receive our evening sacrifice of praise, your Church’s solemn offering. Accept this Easter candle. May it always dispel the darkness of this night!

May the Morning Star which never sets find this flame still burning: Christ, that Morning Star, who came back from the dead, and shed his peaceful light on all creation, your Son who lives and reigns for ever and ever. Amen.

The Liturgy of the Word Before the Readings begin, the celebrant may speak to the people in these or similar words. Bev+ Dear friends in Christ, let us now listen attentively to the word of God, recalling how he

saved his people throughout history and in the fullness of time, sent his own Son to be our Redeemer.

Readings First Reading Sharon Hillier Reader A reading from the book of Genesis.

In the beginning when God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was a formless void and darkness covered the face of the deep, while a wind from God swept over the face of the waters. Day 1 - Then God said, ‘Let there be light’; and there was light… Day 2 - And God said, ‘Let there be a dome in the midst of the waters, … God called the dome Sky… Day 3 - And God said, ‘Let the waters under the sky be gathered together into one place, and let the dry land appear.’ … God called the dry land Earth…Then God said, ‘Let the earth put forth vegetation: Day 4 - And God said, ‘Let there be lights in the dome of the sky … God made the two great lights—and the stars. Day 5 - And God said, ‘… bring forth swarms of living creatures, and birds … Day 6 - And God said, ‘… bring forth living creatures of every kind … Then God said, ‘Let us make humankind in our image … So God created humankind in his image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. God blessed them And it was so. God saw everything that he had made, and indeed, it was very good. These are the generations of the heavens and the earth when they were created.

Prayer after Communion (please stand) Robert+ All your works praise you, O Lord. All And your faithful servants bless you. Gracious God we thank you for feeding us with

the body and blood of your Son Jesus Christ. May we, who share his body, live his risen life; we, who drink his cup, ring life to others; we, whom the Spirit lights, give light to the world. Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us, so that we and all your children shall be free, and the whole earth live to praise your name; through Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Blessing (please remain standing) Robert+ May the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great

shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in you that which is well-pleasing in his sight: And the blessing of God Almighty, X the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit, be among you and remain with you always.

People Amen.

Robert+ Let us pray. Almighty and eternal God, you created all things in wonderful beauty and order. Help us now to perceive how still more wonderful is the new creation, by which in the fullness of time you redeemed your people through the sacrifice of our Passover, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns for ever and ever.

Second Reading Beryl Roth Reader A Reading from the book of Exodus

As Pharaoh drew near, the Israelites looked back, and there were the Egyptians advancing on them. … “Do not be afraid, stand firm, and see the deliverance that the Lord will accomplish for you today; … The Lord will fight for you, and you have only to keep still.” … Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea. The Lord drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and turned the sea into dry land; and the waters were divided. … Then the prophet Miriam, Aaron’s sister, took a tambourine in her hand; and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dancing. And Miriam sang to them: “Sing to the Lord, for he has triumphed gloriously; horse and rider he has thrown into the sea.”

Canticle Song of Moses David Carle, cantor

a period of silence

Bev+ Let us pray. God of steadfast love, your wonderful deeds of old shine forth even to our own day. By the power of your mighty arm you once delivered your chosen people from slavery under Pharaoh, to be a sign for us of the salvation of all nations by the water of baptism. Grant that all the peoples of the earth may be numbered among the offspring of Abraham, and rejoice in the inheritance of Israel. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All AMEN

Third Reading Sharon Hillier Reader A reading from the book of the prophet Ezekiel.

The hand of the Lord came upon me, and he brought me out by the spirit of the Lord and set me down in the middle of a valley; it was full of bones. … Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to these bones, and say to them: O dry bones, hear the word of the Lord. Thus says the Lord God to these bones: I will cause breath to enter you, and you shall live. I will lay sinews on you, and will cause flesh to come upon you, and cover you with skin, and put breath in you, and you shall live; and you shall know that I am the Lord.’ So I prophesied as I had been commanded; … I looked, and there were sinews on them, and flesh had come upon them, and skin had covered them; but there was no breath in them. Then he said to me, ‘Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, mortal, and say to the breath: Thus says the Lord God: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe upon these slain, that they may live.’ … Therefore prophesy, and say to them, Thus says the Lord God: I am going to open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people; and I will bring you back to the land of Israel.

Robert+ Lord, we died with you on the cross. All Now we are raised to new life. Robert+ We were buried in your tomb. All Now we share in your resurrection. Robert+ Live in us as we live in you.

Robert+ and we offer our sacrifice of praise and thanksgiving to you, Lord of all; presenting to you, from your creation, this bread and this wine.

We pray you, gracious God, to send your Holy Spirit upon these gifts, that they may be the sacrament of the body of Christ and his blood of the new covenant. Unite us to your Son in his sacrifice, that we, made acceptable in him, may be sanctified by the Holy Spirit.

In the fullness of time, reconcile all things in Christ, and make them new, and bring us to that city of light where you dwell with all your sons and daughters; through Jesus Christ our Lord, the firstborn of all creation, the head of the Church, and the author of our salvation;

by whom, and with whom, and in whom, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, all honour and glory are yours, almighty Father, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Robert+ And now, as our Saviour Christ has taught us, we are bold to sing, All (sung) (David Haas)

And you shall know that I am the Lord, when I open your graves, and bring you up from your graves, O my people. I will put my spirit within you, and you shall live, and I will place you on your own soil; then you shall know that I, the Lord, have spoken and will act, says the Lord.’

Psalm 143 The choir will lead the refrain, all repeat. The choir will lead the Psalm.

Robert+ Let us pray. Living God, by the Passover of your Son you have brought us out of sin into righteousness, and out of death into life. Grant to those who are sealed by your Holy Spirit the will and power to proclaim you to all the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord.

All AMEN

Fourth Reading Gerard Phillips Reader A reading from the book of the prophet Zephaniah.

Sing aloud, O daughter Zion; shout, O Israel! Rejoice and exult with all your heart, O daughter Jerusalem! The Lord has taken away the judgments against you, he has turned away your enemies. The king of Israel, the Lord, is in your midst; you shall fear disaster no more.

On that day it shall be said to Jerusalem: Do not fear, O Zion; do not let your hands grow weak.

The Lord, your God, is in your midst, a warrior who gives victory; he will rejoice over you with gladness, he will renew you in his love; he will exult over you with loud singing as on a day of festival. I will remove disaster from you, so that you will not bear reproach for it.

I will deal with all your oppressors at that time. And I will save the lame and gather the outcast, and I will change their shame into praise and renown in all the earth.

At that time I will bring you home, at the time when I gather you;

Robert+ Let us pray. O God of unchangeable power and eternal light, look favourably on your whole Church, that wonderful and sacred mystery. By the effectual working of your providence, carry out in tranquility the plan of salvation. Let the whole world see and know that things which were cast down are being raised up, and things which had grown old are being made new, and that all things are being brought to their perfection by him through whom all things were made, your Son Jesus Christ our Lord.

All

Robert+ We give thanks to you, Lord our God, for the goodness and love you have made known to us in creation; in calling Israel to be your people; in your Word spoken through the prophets; and above all in the Word made flesh, Jesus your Son. For in these last days you sent Him to be incarnate from the Virgin Mary, to be the Saviour and Redeemer of the world. In him, you have delivered us from evil, and made us worthy to stand before you. In him, you have brought us out of error into truth, out of sin into righteousness, out of death into life.

On the night he was handed over to suffering and death, a death he freely accepted, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks to you, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, and said, "Take, eat: this is my body which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me."

After supper, he took the cup of wine; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, and said, "Drink this, all of you: this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me."

Therefore, Father, according to his command, All we remember his death, we proclaim his resurrection, we await his coming in glory;

Collect of the Day Robert+ Eternal Giver of life and light, this holy night shines with the radiance of the risen Christ.

Renew your Church with the Spirit given to us in baptism, that we may worship you in sincerity and truth, and shine as a light in the world; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.

All Amen.

Psalm # 114 Tonus peregrinus (red chant book # 218) sung by the choir

Epistle Reading Beryl Roth Reader A reading from St. Paul’s letter to the Romans.

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. 7For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Reader Hear what the Spirit is saying to the Church. All Thanks be to God. (Romans 6: 3 – 11)

Bev+ Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? All I believe in God the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints,

the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting.

Robert+ Will you continue in the apostles teaching and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in the prayers?

All I will, with God’s help.

Robert+ Will you persevere in resisting evil and, whenever you fall into sin, repent and return to the Lord?

All I will, with God’s help.

Robert+ Will you proclaim by word and example the good news of God in Christ? All I will, with God’s help.

Robert+ Will you seek and serve Christ in all persons, loving your neighbour as yourself? All I will, with God’s help.

Robert+ Will you strive for justice and peace among all people, and respect the dignity of every human being?

All I will, with God’s help.

Robert+ Will you strive to safeguard the integrity of God’s creation, and respect, sustain, and renew the life of the earth?

All I will, with God’s help.

The Baptism The celebrant will baptise Christian with water in the name of

the Father, and the Son, and the Holy Spirit.

He will then be signed with the cross using chrism oil.

The celebrant prays over the newly baptized, saying, Heavenly Father, we thank you that by water and the Holy Spirit you have bestowed upon Christian the forgiveness of sin, and have raised him to the new life of grace. Sustain him, O Lord, in your Holy Spirit. Give him an inquiring and discerning heart, the courage to will and to persevere, a spirit to know and to love you, and the gift of joy and wonder in all your works.

All Amen.

The Giving of the Light One of the ministers will then give to Christian a lighted candle, saying,

Receive the light of Christ, to show that you have passed from darkness to light.

The Celebration of Baptism Thanksgiving over the Water

Robert+ The Lord be with you. People And also with you. Robert+ Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. People It is right to give our thanks and praise. Robert+ We thank you, Almighty God, for the gift of water. Over water the Holy Spirit moved in

the beginning of creation. Through water you led the children of Israel out of their bondage in Egypt into the land of promise. In water your Son Jesus received the baptism of John and was anointed by the Holy Spirit as the Messiah, the Christ, to lead us, through his death and resurrection, from the bondage of sin into everlasting life.

We thank you, Father, for the water of baptism. In it we are buried with Christ in his death. By it we share in his resurrection. Through it we are reborn by the Holy Spirit. Therefore in joyful obedience to your Son, we bring into his fellowship Christian, who come to Him in faith, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

Now sanctify X this water by the power of your Holy Spirit, that those who are here cleansed from sin and born again, may continue for ever in the risen life of Jesus Christ our Saviour.

To him, to you, and to the Holy Spirit, be all honour and glory, now and for ever. All Amen.

The Baptismal Covenant Then Bev+ says, addressing the entire congregation.

Let us join with Christian who is committing himself to Christ and renew our own baptismal covenant.

Bev+ Do you believe in God the Father? All I believe in God, The Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.

Bev+ Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? All I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the

Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Gradual Hymn O Sons and Daughters

Gospel All stand for the Gospel. Bev+ The Lord be with you. People And also with you.

Bev+ The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to St. Luke People Glory to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they came to the tomb, taking the spices that they had prepared. They found the stone rolled away from the tomb, but when they went in, they did not find the body. While they were perplexed about this, suddenly two men in dazzling clothes stood beside them. The women were terrified and bowed their faces to the ground, but the men said to them,

‘Why do you look for the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be handed over to sinners, and be crucified, and on the third day rise again.’

Then they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb, they told all this to the eleven and to all the rest.

Now it was Mary Magdalene, Joanna, Mary the mother of James, and the other women with them who told this to the apostles. But these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter got up and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; then he went home, amazed at what had happened.

At the conclusion of the Gospel, Bev+ says, The Gospel of Christ.

People Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ. (Luke 24:1-12)

Sermon The Rev’d Robert Clifford, Rector
