Easte r 2020

It all happened so fast. Overnight, the world that we had been accustomed to had been permanently, radically, devastatingly changed. A sudden collapse of everything around us we knew and lived for. The warning signs had been there, and warning calls had gone in one ear and out the other. The moment everyone feared the most had arrived, and no one was prepared for it. The same people who at the beginning of the week welcomed you were now insulting you and angrily demanding your life. The other people are either indifferent; and not the “ignorance is bliss” kind of ignorant, but more like the “It doesn’t affect me, I couldn’t care less” kind. Your spirit was pained knowing that others chose to do evil instead of good in the moment of crisis. Then the pain became all the more profound as you felt the absence of those you know and love. The agony of this was intensified by your burning desire to communicate your love to them, but the circumstances simply will not allow it to happen. Loneliness. Isolation. Agony. Even existential darkness about what the point of it all is. What took place could never be undone. What I’ve attempted to do here (in a very small way) is to paint a picture of how things were on Good Friday. Perhaps a thought of the current COVID-19 pandemic also crossed your mind as you were reading it. If it did, then that is not by accident. Jesus Christ, in spite of his divinity, completely felt all of the above (and much, much more) in his sacred humanity. Yet we know that we are able to call “Good Friday” GOOD because Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday. God’s ways are always much greater than our own. Pope St. John Paul II wrote that, “If the agony on the Cross had not happened, the truth that God is love would have been unfounded.” We must remember that what is overwhelming for us is not overwhelming for God. We can lean on him, because His love for us is true and real. And His sufferings for us won us forgiveness and salvation. Things could never be the same after the Cross because the disciples ran to the tomb and found it empty. The spiritual light of the Risen Christ puts everything in a new and right perspective. Consider these words from St. Paul: “I am convinced that the sufferings of this present life are as nothing compared to the glory to be revealed in us.” (Romans 8:18) This Easter we proceed in faith again to the Empty Tomb, for we know and proclaim that Christ is Risen! Let us pray together fervently for the end of the pandemic, and for the chance to encounter the Risen Christ again in the Paschal Mystery celebrated at every Mass.

God love you, Fr. Chris

“We were indeed buried with him through baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might live in newness of life. For if we have grown into union with him through a death like his, we shall also be united with him in the resurrection. If, then, we have died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with him. We know that Christ, raised from the dead, dies no more; death no longer has power over him. As to his death, he died to sin once and for all; as to his life, he lives for God. Consequently, you too must think of yourselves as being dead to sin and living for God in Christ Jesus.” Romans 6:4-11

Stephen Ministers Care

Stephen Ministers provide emotional and spiritual care to persons

facing a crisis such as bereavement, loneliness, divorce, hospitalization,

terminal illness, job loss, and more.

Stephen Ministers are not counselors or therapists. They will not try

to fix a problem, nor will they run errands and do chores.

Stephen Ministers are caring lay Christians who are specially trained

to listen and focus on an individual’s needs. They can be trusted to

hold everything shared in complete confidence. And they will faithfully

meet on a weekly basis for as long as the need is there.

How to refer someone for care

If you or someone you know is going through a difficult time and would benefit from a Stephen Minister, please let us know:

Speak with Father Chris.

Email us at [email protected].

Leave a message with the All Saints parish office (978) 372-7721.

After a referral, what happens next?

One of our Stephen Leaders, Kathy or Tony, will contact you or the

person in need of care directly.

Afterward, one of us will call the potential care receiver to arrange an

in‑person discussion. We will try to understand the specific need or life

crisis, and explain all about a Stephen Ministry caring relationship.

Once fully informed, the person you refer can decide whether or not to

accept care from a Stephen Minister.

Occasionally, the interviewing Stephen Leader and potential care

receiver conclude that a Stephen Minister is not the right person to

provide care. In this case, we will do our best to recommend

alternative resources which may be a better match.

How soon will a Stephen Minister come?

A Stephen Minister works one-to-one with a care receiver. A male care

receiver will be paired with a male Stephen Minister, and a female

care receiver with a female Stephen Minister.

If Stephen Ministry is the right care and the person is prepared to

accept a Stephen Minister, our Stephen Leaders will assign someone

as soon as possible. This could be within days of the referral interview

if a Stephen Minister is free, but if all Stephen Ministers are already

working with other care receivers there will be a delay.

Our Stephen Leaders

Tony Feliu and

Kathy Fitzmeyer are

All Saints parishioners.

Feel free to contact them with

questions even if you are not

making a referral.

They are best reached through

the email address at left.

Confidentiality

Everything a care receiver

shares with a Stephen

Minister stays with the

Stephen Minister.

Even within our team, a care

receiver’s name and specifics

of their situation are never

mentioned.

Only four people will ever

know the identity of the care

receiver: the Stephen Minister

giving care, Father Chris, and

our two Stephen Leaders,

Kathy and Tony.

This pledge of confidentiality

will be broken only if there is a

risk of self-harm. Then the

Stephen Minister would be

obligated to call in

professional help.

No intent

Tony Feliu y Kathy Fitzmeyer

son feligreses de Todos los

Santos.

No dude en contactarlos si

tiene preguntas, incluso si no

va a referir a alguien.

La mejor forma de contactarlos

es a través de la dirección

de correo electrónico a la

izquierda.

Confidencialidad

Todo lo que un receptor de

cuidados comparte con un

Ministro de Esteban se queda

con el ministro.

Incluso dentro de nuestro

equipo, el nombre de un

receptor de atención y los

detalles de su situación,

nunca se mencionan.

Solo cuatro personas conocerán

la identidad del receptor de la

atención: el Ministro de

Esteban que ofrece el servicio,

el Padre Marcos, y nuestros

dos líderes de Ministros de

Esteban, Kathy y Tony.

Esta promesa de confiden

cialidad se romperá solo si

existe el riesgo de autolesión.

Entonces el Ministro de

Esteban estaría obligado

a pedir ayuda profesional.

Sacram ent o f Confe ssion The Sacrament of Confession will continue to be available by DRIVE THRU at All Saints. It will be offered Saturdays from 3 to 4 pm and Sundays from 10 am to 12 pm. Just pull up your car to the garage and make your confession at a safe distance to the priest inside.

Dear Parish Family,

We are so grateful for the outpouring of concern and support the parish has received the last few weeks. We understand that this may be a difficult financial time for many. Like many parishes, we depend on the weekly support of our collections. The loss of even one weekend’s Offertory creates great hardship. If you are able to continue your financial support during this difficult time, please know that online giving is available on our website allsaintshaverhill.org. Just click the “Online Giving” link at the top right of the homepage. If you prefer to send your normal weekly envelopes, please do so by mail or drop them at the Rectory, through the slot in the side door.

Earlier this week, we received a letter from the Chancellor about another way that parishioners can help to support their parish. Out of great care and concern for our parishes, a member of the laity stepped forward to design a daily giving platform. It is a special, 90-day campaign that will provide offertory support directly to the parish. Called “90 DAYS NOW –

FOR YOUR PARISH” this special initiative asks, if possible, for parishion-ers to rally around their parish by making a special daily offertory commitment for the next 90 days. This effort is intended to supplement weekly offertory gifts, given the challenges of the current crisis. If you would like to join in this effort, the Archdiocese has created an easy-to-use link to donate:

https://bcatholic.sites.bostoncatholic.org/90DaysYourParish

Just visit the link and choose “All Saints Parish (Haverhill)” from the drop down menu. Your credit card statement will reflect the amount you donated as being given to www.BostonCatholic.org, but please note that your donation and notification of your participation in this initiative will be sent directly to All Saints. The Archdiocese of Boston is merely providing a payment mechanism to give us some additional support during this challenging time. It’s a wonderful gift to us and we are grateful.

We understand many of you may not be able to contribute to this special offertory collection given the economic impact this pandemic has had on your personal finances. We remain extremely grateful for your prayers of support for our parish family.

It is at times like these our faith reminds us that we are never truly alone, even as we face unprecedent-ed challenges as a parish community. Though we are not able to join together in the celebration of the Eucharist, we continue daily to pray for the health of you and your loved ones.

With our prayers,

Fr. Chris and Fr. Marcos

Thank you to all whose donations and prayers are helping to keep All Saints looking forward.

FAMILY FAITH FORMATION (978) 372-7721

Greetings from Ghana!

Father Sylvester sends his love and blessings to everyone at All Saints Parish. Now that the elementary school at his parish has been completed, the next phase is to complete the junior high school. For more information on Father Sylvester’s parish and how you can help, please see the All Saints Facebook page at www.facebook.com/allsaintshaverhill and Father Sylvester’s parish website at www.sfx-parish.com. “Whoever cares for the poor lends

to the LORD, who will pay back the sum in full.” Proverbs 19:17

Dear Friends, The other day I read a friend’s social media post. It was observing how beautiful the weather was, but how unfortunate it was that there was not baseball being played. I was struck by the irony of the post. It was a beautiful spring day, birds chirping and not a cloud in the sky. Flowers are beginning to poke through the piles of forgotten leaves and the air was refreshing. But the writer immediately went to what was WRONG with the picture. In a text later that night with another friend, she wrote a hopeful message that maybe soon we’d see a silver lining. I reminded her that the silver lining is there, to look closer, or even to ask the Lord to make the silver a little more shiny. This is a strange, uncharted, scary time. It is filled with uncertainty and fear, but yet there is so much more.

I read recently that the Himalayas are visible for the first time in 30 years because of the lessening of pollution in India. Families are creating new memories and playing together. Teachers are reaching into their “tool box” to figure out new ways to engage kids in learning. Parents are becoming the primary teachers of their kids and grandparents are learning how to “zoom” from their grandchildren. Generations of people are finding ways to CONNECT! Yes, many of us are feeling first hand the sadness and uncertainty of this pandemic, and it is hard. But, let us remember that as Christian people we are followers of Christ. In this very Holy Week, we are reminded of his Passion and Death. We are LIVING it, but the story does not end there. If we die with him, we RISE with him. As an Easter people, we must look for the silver lining, the empty tomb, the signs of life in the darkness. The world is coming together by being apart, and God has a plan for all of this - a plan of Hope and Resurrection.

Happy Easter!

May the Lord make the silver a bit more shiny for you so you can see Him more clearly during these difficult days.

Peace, Jamie
