From Fr. Joe Last Saturday evening 40 married couples
attended our parish’s Celebration of Marriage
as lived in the life of the Church. Those 40
couples brought together 1,478 years of
married life as they shared a meal; were
entertained with video presentations; prayed
together and renewed their marital
commitment. They also heard about a move-
ment called “Teams of Our Lady” which offers
an opportunity for married couples to gather in
small groups in friendship for prayer and for
support. The years of marriage for the 40
couples ranged from just over 1 year to 66
years of living the Sacrament of Matrimony. If
you are married and didn’t make it to this
year’s event, I hope you consider attending
when we gather again in 2020 for the
Celebration of Marriage event. (Last
Saturday’s Celebration of Marriage evening
also offered a nice break from thinking about
the blast of winter weather we’ve been
experiencing.)
Speaking of the weather and the
occasional whiteout conditions, my brain is
experiencing some of the same. So, at the
moment lacking coherent original reflections,
I’d like to share with you something I read from
C.S. Lewis’ book Mere Christianity.
Lewis, an Irish born British writer and lay
theologian, recalled speaking to some men
from the R.A.F. (Royal Air Force) about God,
religion and Christianity. Now in the quotes
that follow, there is mention of one man’s
experience of “the desert”, but you can
substitute whatever might be a comparable
experience for you or someone you know.
Some examples: being out in the woods; on
the lake fishing; on the golf course; whatever
might be a quiet leisure activity).
Again, when Lewis was talking about
Christianity:
An old, hard-bitten officer got up and
said, “I’ve no use for all that stuff. But,
mind you, I’m a religious man too. I
know there’s a God. I’ve felt Him: out
alone in the desert at night: the tremen-
dous mystery. And that’s just why I don’t
believe all your neat little dogmas and
formulas about Him. To anyone who’s
met the real thing they all seem so petty
and pedantic and unreal!”
Now in a sense I quite agreed with that
man. I think he had probably had a real
experience of God in the desert. And
when he turned from that experience to
the Christian creeds, I think he really was
turning from something real to some

thing less real. In the same way, if a man
has once looked at the Atlantic from the
beach, and then goes and looks at a
map of the Atlantic, he also will be
turning from something real to something
less real: turning from real waves to a bit
of coloured paper. But here comes the
point. The map is admittedly only
coloured paper, but there are two things
you have to remember about it. In the
first place, it is based on what hundreds
and thousands of people have found
out by sailing the real Atlantic. In that
way it has behind it masses of experi-
ence just as real as the one you could
have from the beach; only, while yours
would be a single isolated glimpse, the
map fits all those different experiences
together. In the second place, if you
want to go anywhere, the map is
absolutely necessary. As long as you are
content with walks on the beach, your
own glimpses are far more fun than
looking at a map. But the map is going
to be more use than walks on the beach
if you want to get to America.
(Mere Christianity by C.S. Lewis, pp 135-136)
If you, or someone you know, has the attitude
of that hard-bitten officer in regards to the
details and practices of Christianity (of
Catholicism), are you content with your own
little and limited glimpse of God? Or do you
want to experience and live with God for
eternity? In other words, do you want and
hope to get to heaven? Then you need the
map.
Have a blessed, safe, and hopefully storm-
free week,
Stewardship in Our Readings The words of the psalmist echo the theme of all of today’s readings.
“Blessed are they who hope in the Lord.” As good stewards, firmly
grounded in that hope, may we bear fruit in due season—assisting the
poor, feeding the hungry, and consoling the sorrowful whenever we have
the chance.

Any donations after this date will be
applied to the next season of books (Easter—

From our Diocese:
Seminarian Education Fund Thank You
Throughout the Diocese of Gaylord, we
continue to work hard to foster a culture of
vocations in which men and women are
encouraged to listen for, and respond to,
God’s call for their lives. For the past seven
years, we have taken up a special collection in
August for the Seminarian Education Fund.
Thank you to all who have supported the
education of our seminarians.
As of 1/31/19, the diocese has received
donations of just over $328,000 and our parish
contributed $16,311.00 of that amount. Please
know that your gift to the Seminarian
Education Fund Collection not only makes a
difference now but also for the future of the
Catholic Church here in Northern Lower
Michigan.
Thank you for your generosity!
Note of Thanks On behalf of Options Pregnancy Center, I would like to thank you for your
donation to our ministry [$1,501.39—Quarterly Tithe]. It certainly helps our
planning.
We are blessed and grateful to have you financially partner with us. Your
support allows us to share the gospel message and offer compassionate,
life-affirming services to those facing an unexpected pregnancy. Thank
you for making a difference.
There is still much to accomplish as we continue to work diligently to lay a
firm foundations for this ministry. We are confident that through God’s
unwavering strength and provision, we will see this community
transformed by His love and grace.
Please continue to keep Options and the lives of those who walk through
the door of our Center in your prayers, as we will yours.

Parish Vision All Saints Parish is a spiritual and faith-filled family,
embraced by God’s love. We are centered on the
Holy Eucharist, inspired by the Communion of Saints
and empowered by the Holy Spirit to enliven and
ignite a community bound by love. We are united in
vibrant service under the leadership of the Trinity.
Parish Mission We, the members of All Saints Parish are called as a
sacramental people to grow in our faith and
participate fully in the one Body of Christ, centered in
the Eucharist. We value each other’s gifts and talents
as we serve the needs of our community while living
the truth and love of the Gospel.
Need a Ride to Mass?
Our parish partners
with Thunder Bay
T r a n s p o r t a t i o n
Authority to provide
a ride for those who
are in need.
Those who need a ride will need to call TBTA
(ph: 989-356-4596) two hours before you would
like to be picked up to schedule your ride. If
you wish to have it charged, you must tell TBTA
dispatcher you are charging it to All Saints
Parish (we will not be doing reimbursements as
we would have no proof of a ride).
The parish will cover the ride only to/from
Church for the 4 PM Saturday Mass and the
11 AM Sunday Mass (based on the hours of
operation for TBTA).
