WHEN TO GOThe weather in Thailand is generally marked by three seasons, the rainy season, hot season, and cool season. In cool season (Nov-Feb), temperatures are comfort-able. In rainy season (May-Oct), you will find the lush landscape but some islands shut down and boat service is limited during stormy weather. Be flexible with travel plans. Hot season (Mar-Apr) is ideal for beaches.

Pearls and wisdomMost pearls now available in Phuket come from farms as natural pearls have become very rare. However, don’t be disappointed as pearl oysters in the farms are kept and raised in a natural way through a synthetic process that allows the production of pearls. Specialists from pearl farms on Ko Rang Yai explain this amazing process.

Modern times have arrived in Phuket but locals do not forget their origins. Baba-Nyonya Weddings, neglected for 50 years, has been revived to show Peranakan culture that once played a significant role on the island. Couples are invited to have their wedding ceremonies in Baba- Nyonya style, a blend of Chinese, Malay, and Thai traditions. The ceremonies, held in June, involve an impressive parade of guests dressed up in old-fashioned costumes and enjoying authentic Peranakan cuisine.

NEED TO KNOW

Unique cultureBaba and Nyonya are terms used for man and woman who are Peranakan (half Chinese and Malay). Peranakan men wear western attire while the women dress in batik tube skirts, vivid Mandarin collared shirts, and shoes decorated with bright beads. Wedding ceremonies of mixed Chinese and Malay culture are special and very impressive.

Plan well because such programs could take time for transfer between point to point. At least one day should be devoted to visits to national parks to ensure that delegates are not too exhausted.
