    Your guide

Thank you or picking up a copy o Koh Chang & Beyond, the essentialmonthly guide to Koh Chang or visitors and those interested in doingbusiness on Koh Chang and the neighbouring islands.

Koh Chang & Beyond was launched to ll the dual need or a monthlymagazine covering all aspects o island li e plus a ree guide thats actuallyun to read. Every month, we provide well researched, unbiased, and occasionally humourous, in ormation and articles or visitors plus real estate, classi ed and business listings or those living and working on the island.Written by Thai and Expat residents o Koh Chang, you can be assured thatour local knowledge is unparalleled.

Koh Chang has been attracting visitors or over a decade, however it isonly during the past our or ve years that tourism has picked up and KohChang has blossomed into a destination or everyone rom cash consciousbackpackers to package tourists in search o a week long island escape.

Due to its size Koh Chang o ers something or all ages, tastes and budgets. From expansive white sandy beaches, scenic water alls, ascinatingmarine li e, quiet, undiscovered mangrove lined bays to ull moon partiesand beach bars pumping out last years dance music till the early hours.

With the Thai government now promoting Koh Chang as a premiertourist destination it isnt surprising that the island is currently undergoing a boom in development with chipboard backpacker huts slowly being replaced by modern boutique bungalow resorts and amily riendlyhotels. Phuket has been attracting tourists in large numbers or over 30years, Samui or 20 years and now Koh Chang, the second largest island in Thailand, is playing catch up.

Bangkok Airways fy into Trat airport rom Bangkok. This twice, sometimes thrice, daily 40 minute sky hop is ideal or travelers seekingto avoid a ve hour bus ride rom Bangkok.

The Trat o ce o Bangkok Airways can be reached on 039 525 29930. But youll nd it easier to book tickets at any travel agents, expectto pay around 2,000 baht / single or 4,000 baht / return.

Look out or low season discounts. From Trat airport take theBangkok Airways minibus service to any resort on the island, this isby ar the easiest, simplest way to reach the island.

BY CarComing rom Bangkok, the quickest route is via the motorway (High

way 7) out o the east o the city. Shortly a ter the second tollbooth, youllsee a turn o to Ban Bueng, Highway 344.

Stay on the 344, looking out or police checkpoints and ollow thesigns to Klaeng then join Highway 3 in Klaeng town. Head past Chantaburi, ollow the signs or Trat. Around 23km outside Trat, turn right at the T junction with 3156, signposted to Laem Ngop. 20 minutes drive laterand youll be at the rst o the car erry piers. Total driving time is aroundour to our and a hal hours.

From Pattaya, simply get on Highway 3 (Sukhumvit Road) and headin the direction o Rayong. From Rayong, Highway 3 leads on to Klaneg,Chantaburi and Trat, as described above. Driving time to the erry pier isapproximately three to three and a hal hours.

There are two options, a minivan or a ullsize bus. You may have thought that gettingve English guys with backpacks the sizeo ATM machines, our large Germans, three ull gured Scandinavian girls and acouple o bewildered Asian visitors loadeddown with camera gear into the back o a minivan was a physical impossibility. Itisnt as youll discover i you make the tripto Koh Chang by minibus.

Convenience and time are the main selling points o the minibus experience. Theregular bus takes an hour or two longer andit terminates in Trat, rom where you haveto take a little blue pickup (30 baht) to theLaem Ngop pier. (Dont worry about not being able to pronounce Laem Ngop correctlyas everyone in and around the bus stationknows where youre heading.)

Figure on 250 300 baht or the minibusexperience, 170 200 baht or the big bus. Time wise, youre looking at about our anda hal hours or the minibus, which will go

direct to the erry pier and up to six hoursor the big bus which goes to Trat town andmakes several stops on the way. Add on anadditional 20 30 minutes or the trans er toLaem Ngop.

An airconditioned bus service now runstwice a day rom Ekkamai bus station, Bangkok direct to Centrepoint erry pier. Get thebus at 7.30 am or 9.30 am. The cost is 198baht per person.Return buses leave Laem

Ngop Centrepoint pier at 2pm and 4pm.

There are also regular daily minibusesand public buses making the trip rom Pattaya to Koh Chang. Minibuses usually departearly morning with slower public buses to Trat departing at various times throughoutthe day rom Sukhumvit Road.

Koh Mak Koh Mak is a relatively small island covering an area o 16sqm.

It has ar more o a tropical desert island eel to it than Koh Changas no matter where you are youre never more than a ew minutesrom a palm ringed beach.

No wonder that The Sunday Times newspaper named Koh Mak as one o its Worlds Top 10 Secret Beaches in late 2006. Away romthe two main beaches on the northwest and northeast coasts, thescenery mainly comprises rubber and coconut plantations.

Most visitors opt to see the island by oot, bicycle or on a rentalmotorbike there are very ew cars on the island as there are veryew roads. The island has 24 hour electricity.

Koh KradadNamed a ter Kradad trees, which mainly cover the island. Dur

ing the French colonization o Indochina, Koh Kradad was targetedas a possible territory o expansion. Thus it was the rst island tobe issued land title deeds by the order o King Rama V to con rm Thailands sovereignty over the island. The long white beach andthe corals are the main attractions.

Koh LaoyaA little way south o Koh Sai

Khao lies Koh Laoya, a whitesand ringed island which makesa great sport or snorkeling orsimply doing nothing. There isone resort on the island which

Koh Kood The second largest, a ter Koh Chang, o the 52 islands that

comprise the Koh Chang archipelago and i it wasnt located sodamn ar away would easily be the most popular as its an islandthats de nitely worth a visit. Its remote location has ensured that ithasnt attracted masses o developers looking to make a ew quick

baht. There ore, the resorts that have been built have been doneso, or the most part, very taste ully.

In addition, the comparatively small number o visitors meansthat there isnt enough business to support hoards o vendors sellingtacky t shirts, souvenir woodcarvings and henna tattoos.

    Koh Wai

Koh Wai is a medium sized island around 12 kilometres south o Salakphet Bay. Reaching the island is easy with daily boat servicesrom both Koh Chang and also Laem Ngop on the mainland.

Although the island does have attractive beaches and severalresorts in which to stay, its best avoided i one o your prerequisitesor a beach experience is that the beach have ne, white powderysand.

Unlike small neighbouring islands Koh Wais quiet, narrow

beaches are covered in coarser red sand.

    PATTAYA HiSTorY

Fi t rs Pattaya was a sleepylittle shing village. Its only claim to amebeing that it had, in the Vietnam War and

an incursion by more benign oreign troops. Thailand supported the American e ortsin the area by providing bases, manned bythousands o young Americans requiringrest and recreation.

Pattaya continued to grow in popularityat such a rate, with both Thai and oreigntourists, that the local government couldnot cope with the administration. TheAdministrative and in rastructure conbinedwith Naklua took place in 1976 and thegovernment promulgated the PattayaCity Act B.E. 2521 (1978), thereby joiningNaklua and Pattaya to orm the th localgovernment municipality. Thus PattayaCity was born, and with an ever increasingin lux o visitors and residents rom theburgeoning surrounding industrial estates, she has developed into what she is today.

Within twenty years, Pattaya hasbeen trans ormed rom a sleepy ishingcommunity into an international resorto ten re erred to as the Thai Rivera. Pattayais literally a place where East meets West, both in color and character, and is probablythe most cosmopolitan place in Thailanda ter Bangkok.
