YOUTH GROUP MEETINGS

Sunday, 6:00-8:00 pm – All youth in grades 6-12

are welcome. Bring your friends, too! Meetings

usually include a devotional, a snack, and a game.

We are also trying to incorporate a monthly mis-

sions project into our plans.

LADIES’ NIGHT OUT

Our next dinner will be on Wed. May 20, 6:00 PM at the Evergreen Restaurant, 5510 Carlisle Pike, Mechan-icsburg. It is a Chinese Buffet and it also has a Mongoli-an style grill, and you can order from the menu. Shirley Fetterolf will make the arrangements.

TEN QUESTIONS - This month we are interviewing Bruce Gearhart, who currently worships with us, but who

also was the pastor at Chestnut Grove from August 1963 until June 1967 while he was a student at Messiah Col-lege. Tell us, Bruce:

1. Where were you born and raised, and where did you go to school?

Indiana, Pa., home of IUP; graduated from Indiana Joint High School, 1957. Attended and graduated from Shen-andoah Junior College in Dayton, VA (Now Shenandoah University, Winchester, VA); Messiah College; and Evan-gelical Theological Seminary, Naperville, ILL.

2. A little bit about your family.

Married To Nioma Gearhart. We have four sons, Gregory, Dennis, Jeffrey, Bruce Eric, six grandchildren and one great grandson.

3. About your job (if you're employed). If you are not currently employed, what did you do in your former life; how do you now spend you days?

Served 42 consecutive years as an Evangelical United Brethren/United Methodist pastor. After retirement, worked 14 years as a driver for the Rahal Lexus dealership in Mechanicsburg, PA., a job I gave up several months ago for health reasons.

4. What is your biggest passion (if you don't have a passion, tell us about your favorite pastime or hobby.

Second after Jesus, my wife, Nioma. We do almost everything together, traveling, home repairs, caring for fami-ly (including our grand-dog Alaska), and helping other people in need.

5. How you became a Christian.

By accepting Christ. I was positively influenced about Christ by my brother-in-law, who married into our family when I was eight.

6. What is your favorite Bible verse?

I have no particular favorite verse, but find these psalms meaningful and helpful: 27, 130, 131, and John 3;16.

7. Your favorite hymn?

"He Lives", to be sung at my funeral.

8. What is your favorite thing about CGUMC?

Friendliness of the people; Michael Druck's sermons.

9. Something that might surprise us about you

I wish I had been born with an ability to have a "singing" voice.

10. If you had a million dollars, how would you spend it?

Tithe 10% to Christian work; create trust funds for family members and others, share with those in need, and trav-el (with someone else doing my packing for travel).

11. A prayer request I have is.... (1) the nations of the world. Read the text to hymn 432, in the UM Hymnal; (2) the lethargic attitude of the church in America (including myself).

Long-Distance Cheer - Tammy Strayer has in-troduced us to Rileigh Sunday, a 6 year old who is battling leukemia. Rileigh doesn’t get much mail and Tammy had asked us to pray for her and to send cards, drawings etc. to help cheer her up. KEEP THOSE CARDS COMING

Don’t toss out your old greeting cards. We recycle

them, with proceeds benefitting various Chestnut

Grove expenses! Currently there is a need for Get

Well and Thinking of You cards. We need the entire

card, but if there is something personal written in-

side, feel free to cut it out. What is important is the

message printed inside the card. And don’t forget, if

you need a greeting card to send, there is a large as-

sortment of beautiful cards available in the library at

bargain prices. For more information about the card

SUMMER CAMP IS JUST AROUND THE CORNER

If you have a child , a grandchild or a friend who might benefit from a week away in a Christian envi-ronment, you might want to look into the options for summer camp. Our congregation offers assis-tance to pay for camp, and we are willing to extend that help to friends of our congregation, even if they do not attend here. See Pastor Mike for more information on fee assistance.

The Susquehanna Conference of the United Methodist Church offers many camping programs for all ages - including adults! There are programs for kids who love sports, music, photography, drama - kids who are afraid to commit to a full week - families who want to go to camp together - women who quilt - men. There really is something for everyone. Check out their brochure at the church or on the internet at http://www.susumcamps.org/

Joy-El Ministries is a local organization which runs the Release Time Bible program in our local schools. The theme for their camping program this year is “Hero of Light” and focuses on John 1:5, “The Light shines in the Darkness”. They offer both day camps and full-week residential camp pro-grams. TIME FLIES

I am writing this article on April 17th which means there are only 70 days left until June 28th, the first night

of VBS! That may seem like a LOT of time, but “how time flies” these days when everyone is so busy..

Wow! So many things to accomplish like all new songs to learn, so many VOLUNTEERS to gather and

assign JOBS to. So many DECISIONS to

make. SO MUCH TO DO ! SO LITTLE

TIME! HELP !

National Day of Prayer Walk

The Dillsburg Ministerium is organizing the annual Prayer Walk for the National Day of

Prayer on Thursday, May 7, 2015. The Prayer Walk begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Prayer Gar-

den of St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, 201 South Baltimore Street. Prayer stops are planned for

public venues along South Baltimore Street to the Square, turn onto East Harrisburg Street

then to Harrisburg Pike to East Church Street. After praying at the Old Monaghan Church,

the route will continue to the Dillsburg Senior Center. At this stop, prayers will be offered

for New Hope Ministries and the Senior Center. A time of fellowship and refreshments will

be offered at the Senior Center.

The theme for the 2015 National Day of Prayer is “Lord, hear our cry” from 1 Kings 8:28, emphasizing the need for

individuals, corporately and individually, to place their faith in their Creator. Please join your brothers and sisters

in prayer on this National Day of Prayer. Go to the website, http://nationaldayofprayer.org for more information

Celebrating Mother’s Day

Our Fellowship Meal on May 3 presents an opportunity to honor our mothers by cooking for them! Men and Kids,

we would love to sample your version of Mom’s favorite dish. But regardless of who prepares the food, please

plan to join us for a time of food and fellowship following worship.

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK – GUEST EDITORIAL ON “MUSIC AND SPIRITUALITY” (Styles and Elements in Worship)

Colossians 2: 22-23a – “These rules, which have to do with things that are all destined to perish with use, are based on

merely human commands and teachings. Such regulations indeed have an appearance of wisdom, with their self-

imposed worship…”

Intro by Pastor Mike: Recent experiments (cycling through different elements) in Orders of Worship (some based on

congregation and Worship Team input, some based on my understanding of worship) met with a wide variety of

responses that simply proves we reflect very different preferences. Some caused confusion or even distress (too many

changes too often was unwise), while others lauded the change-ups that broke what for them had become a “rote

routine.” Music Videos to lead Praise Music when the Praise Band or Team wasn’t present – and “Vacation Bible School”

(actually just kid versions of Praise Music) videos and CD-based songs after Children’s Moments – frustrated some and

blessed others. Please note: Neither opinion was all right or all wrong – they just were what they were – preferences.

As I admitted in the first sentence above -- even I have preferences! But is there another way other than “either/or?”

Though the following guest article is focused on music alone, note the references at the end (bolded) to some radically

different styles of Worship – each of which has and could contribute something to our spirituality – if we will let it.

I am convinced there is a strong link between music and spirituality — that in some sacred and observable ways, music is

a language of the soul. Among other things, music has tune, harmony, tempo and style. We can learn something about

spiritual formation from each element. The tune of music is what identifies it regardless of where we hear it or what

instrument is used to play it. We can whistle the National Anthem or hear it played by a full military band. But when we

hear the tune, we immediately know what song it is.

The spiritual life has tune. It comes to us through the classic doctrines of Christianity, revealed in Scripture and

interpreted by tradition. We are not free to make up the tune; it has been given to us. The spiritual life also has harmony

— what we might call sub-tunes that align with the basic tune to produce a rich and expansive piece of music: bass, alto,

tenor, soprano, etc. Harmony cannot violate or compete with the tune; otherwise there is discord. But with harmony the

tune is enriched.

I take this to be the fundamental expressions of Christianity (Roman, Orthodox, Protestant) and the orders and

denominations which have emerged over the centuries. Let everyone sing! We get a fuller sound than if everyone sang

the same tune.

Music also includes tempo. This not only means that some songs are faster or slower than others, but that the beat of

songs varies as well. Most people appreciate multiple tempos, even if they have a favorite. And they may select music

with a tempo that reflects a mood or spirit they are in at the time. No problem — music is ready to “soothe your soul” in

more than one tempo. So too, the spiritual life varies as to its pace, tempo and beat. No problem.

Finally, there is style. Again, there are many. Some (e.g. opera and country) have been around a long time; others may

have only recently been named. But every style attracts fans, even if people enjoy a variety of styles.

And so, we find style in spirituality. The sacred silence, followed by chants at the monastery or in a Taizé service. The

pulsating liturgy week after week at an Episcopal Church. The good old Gospel songs at a revival service. A classical or

contemporary anthem sung by a choir. You name it. Styles — that touch us in ways no single form could do.
