Dear Parishioners, 1. Bread from Heaven When the Israelites came out of Egypt, God did one miracle after another for them. He got water from a rock for them; and, when they were hungry, he fed them with bread from heaven. “Mah nah?what is this?” the Israelites asked when they saw it; and ‘manna’ has been its name ever since. Why didn’t God just miraculously produce real, ordinary bread for them? Moses answers this question in his speech to the people: God fed them with manna so that they might know one does not live by bread alone. If God had fed them ordinary bread, they wouldn’t have learned the lesson. As it was, first they hungered, and then they were fed miraculously with the who-knows-what-this-is bread from heaven. And so they learned to trust in God, who fed them with what they needed to live. And so, when the time was right, the only-begotten Word of God came so that people might not perish but have everlasting life (John 3:16). That is why Christ said that he was the true bread from heaven. One does not live by bread alone but by this true Word of God. And, by a miracle which completes the lesson of the manna, this Word is the bread of life for all the faithful. The Word of God and the bread from heaven are present here as one. In the Eucharist, then, there is everything that one needs to live, if one will only learn the lesson and trust in the God who feeds his people with himself. 2. POPE’S COLUMN “Do You Love Me?” – A Phrase With a Double Meaning Pope Francis’ Telephone Message to the Pilgrims of Macerata to Loreto June 13, 2017Anne KurianPope and Holy See Pope Francis made a phone call to the participants in the 39th pilgrimage on foot from Macerata to Loreto, in the Marche region of Italy, between the night of June 10-11, 2017. The Pontiff requested the very numerous – especially young people – pilgrims to reflect on the theme of the 39th edition of the nocturnal pilgrimage: “Do You Love Me?” a question or phrase with “a double meaning,” he observed. As every year since 1978, tens of thousands of pilgrims from Italy but also from abroad walk the almost 30 kilometres that separate the “Helvia Recina” Stadium – the traditional point of departure in Macerata – from the Shrine of the Holy House of Loreto in the Marche. “I wish you a good pilgrimage!”, said the Holy Father, whose call arrived during the Vigil of Prayer before the departure. “The theme of the pilgrimage is a very beautiful phrase: “Do you love Me?” said Francis, who added immediately: it’s a phrase with a double meaning, as road has two senses. I can ask Jesus: ‘Do you love me?” And Jesus asks me: ‘Do you love Me?’” “I hope that this evening, on the road and the pilgrimage, each one of you hears Jesus’ voice: ‘Do you love Me?” Let him think and answer Jesus. And then ask Jesus: ‘Jesus, do you love me?’ And that each hear what Jesus says to his heart,” continued the Pope, whose words were published on the event’s Web page. “May he Lord bless you and Our Lady protect you. Have a good pilgrimage!” said Francis, who concluded his brief message with gratitude. “Thank you all! Thank you so much!” he said, ending the call. According to the organizers’ estimates, some 100,000 people took part in the 2017 edition of the pilgrimage. Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Prefect of the new Dicastery for the Laity, the Family and Life celebrated the closing Mass at Loreto.

WHO?- Catholic Archbishop Anthony Fisher, Catholics from across the Sydney region and people of good-will from other faith, community and union organisations join together to ask Planning Minister Anthony Roberts and Greater Sydney Commission to make a greater commitment to increasing housing affordability in our city! WHAT? - Housing Assembly – Wednesday 12th July Major assembly with NSW Planning Minister Anthony Roberts Time: 6pm for 6:30pm-8:15pm (Dinner from 6pm-6:25pm) Venue: St Mary’s Catholic College Hall, 2 Mary St Why should you be there / how does it build power? Þ Following up the Eastwood Assembly (we are consistent

and persistent!) Þ Demonstrate growing power by growing numbers at the

assembly. Þ Minister and GSC in the room to negotiate on the

Inclusionary Zoning policies. Þ Local councils invited to publicly commit to the IZ 15%

target in their LGA This is the follow-up from our May 4th Assembly at Eastwood at which we asked the Minister to commit to higher targets (15-30%) for affordable housing on new developments and to adjust income criteria to acknowledge and support family life and moderate income earners. We now have the two key decision makers in the room so let’s match that commitment and be in the room so the right deci-sions get made. We need to double the numbers from our 350+ showing at Eastwood so please get your parish groups, friends and families together and come along and bring a Catholic voice for justice and compassion to this most important Assembly! We have a chance to change the conversation in this city from one of property and profit to one that is tempered by values of home, family, hospitality and humility.
