Ambassador Waldemar Coutts, the director of Environment and Maritime Affairs in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Chile presents during the official COP21 Side Event, “The Role of the Oceans Beyond 2020: Implications for Adaptation”. Moderated by SIO Director Margaret Leinen, the event included discussions by Plymouth Marine Laboratory Senior Scientist Carol Turley, Hans Pörtner, head of the Department of Integrative Ecophysiology at the Alfred Wegener Institute for Marine and Polar Research, and Scripps biological oceanographer Lisa Levin (below). The side event also included a presentation from Ana Maria Gutiérrez, an environmental advisor at Chile’s Rapa Nui (Easter Island). Ocean Scientists for Informed Policy Scripps partners with Chile to put on official ocean event Scripps graduate students shared their enthusiasm for ocean science and climate change policy with scientific and political leaders like Dr. Françoise Gaill (Ocean and Climate Platform), CA Governor Jerry Brown, and Dr. Sylvia Earle (Mission Blue). During the COP plenary sessions in the Great Hall, negotiators speak on behalf of groups or coalitions of Parties about their collective positions and concerns on specific sections of the text During closed-door break-out meetings, negotiators discuss and seek clarification on critical sections of the draft text. Disagreement among Parties, reflected by bracketed words, is discussed during daily break-out sessions.
