FORD ANGLIA 105E/123E

We have not had a feature article on thesecars for quite some time. In Classic CarWeekly, March 30, 1994, there was a finebit of information about these beautiful, yet somewhat rare cars. The 105E came intobeing at the end of the run of the Anglia100E in November 1959 (for the 1960 modelyear). Concurrently, the boxy-bodied 100EAnglia was re-christened "Popular," and itcontinued as a 100E until model year 1962.(My own Popular 100E RHD is a 1961 model).

I have always been attracted to the 105E/123E body style. The car's shape gives ahint of "movement" I think. You either likeit or you don't; I do l Under the bonnetwas the first overhead valve engine in theEnglish Ford Line (after nearly thirty yearswith the famous (infamous?) sidevalve plant). The 1960 Prefect 107E also shared this newerengine until its demise in 1961. The enginewas more powerful and more rugged; it woulcsustain higher speeds than the sidevalvecould, without a great sacrifice in the allimportant miles-per-gallon category.

TECHNICAL

The Anglia 105E of 1960 was sleek, it was spiffy, and it was priced at under$1600. P.O.E. New York. So why didi't it make the grade, big-time? Let'slook at the probable reasons by putting ourselves back into the year 1960.(If you weren't born then, go and ask your father).

What happened in the U.S. auto industry in 19597 I'll tell you. The BigThree - plus American Motors - all came out with new "compact cars. 1I Fordhad the Falcon; Chrysler had Valiant; GM had the rear-engined Corvair; andAmerican Motors continued with the Rambler American. Oh, yes and Studebaker made its first flight with Lark (almost forgot that one~. So, herecomes Anglia 105E onto that scene. TILT l If IItiming is everything," thetiming of this one had to be TERRIBLE. Americans had started to patronizeU.S. car dealers for "smaller cars," and the numbers for the foreign cars(except for Volkswagen) would never be the same again. Import figures forEnglish Ford peaked out in 1957-1959; they would never reach those levelsagain. The 105E was a victim of the trends in the U.S. toward smallerDOMESTIC cars.

The first 105E was a 997cc four-cylinder.In 1962, the Super Anglia made itsdebut, at 1198cc - plus some moreschmaltzy trim and op-ions - butit was no use. The t~me of theimport car would never again bewhat it had been before. Our ownSMALL CAR PARADE had begun.

Q. How many 105E/123E Anglias are there in our club?A. Hey, I'm really glad you asked that question - because I just got through

counting them up (based on the information I have on the Rolodex).

We have, on record: 105E 13 (997 cc enginel123E Super 5 (1198cc engine105E Estate 2 (station wagon (997 or 1198)Van 307E 2 (997cc engine)Van 309E 2 (1198cc engine)

24

In Michael Allen's book, Anglia, Prefect, Popular, From Ford Eight to 105E,published in England in 1986, production figures are given for the "Post-1959Ang1ia" (shall we call it?):

Ang1ia 105E + Super Anglia 123E, Oct 1959-Nov 1967: 954,000 unitsAnglia Estate 105E (997 and 1198co engines), Sep 1961-Nov 1967: 129,000

We can deduce from those figures that the Estate was not produced until themodel was nearly two years into production; also, most of the Estate vehicleswere for export, apparently. Of 215 Estates of the 119800 type, only 51 weresold in Britain, for example. I do not have this same information for thebalance of the 129,ooo-unit run. I do know that the Estate body style is arare one 1 Even MORE rare is the 307E/309E Sedan Delivery Van, whose figuresare not even listed in Mr. Allen's book, above. I have also noticed that my105E Parts Book contains no information about either the Estate or the Van.I wonder if there was a separate publication for those two. Does anyone know?

About six years ago, at Spring Carlisle, I found a light blue Ang1ia 105Esedan for sale. It was in superb condition, original paint, pristine interior, and only 26,000 miles. The price was S1800. I had never seen one before; Iwas not "into English Fords" at the time. It got away. Too bad 1

I do know one thing - as many times as I have seen and/or bought English Fordparts, seldom have I seen or bought much for the 105E/123E Anglias. Again, Ithink it goes back to the demand factors I mentioned earlier. I mean, whywould Ford of England ship whole batches of parts across the pond for a carthat was just not selling? I suspect they got pretty careful pretty quickly •••

Identification of the 105£ line was pretty easy. The 105E Deluxe had a fullwidth grille spread out between those modified-triangle turn signals. The105E Standard model's grille was only about 70% as wide, ending in a block-outpiece of sheet metal before re-joining the turn signals. The Deluxe had apiece of chrome full-length from just behine the headlights to the tail lights. The Standard model had an indentation in the body panels, but no chrome alongits length. The 123E Super Anglia is a snap to recognize. Instead of thatsingle piece of chrome, full-length on the body sides, the Super has T~O

pieces of chrome that form a kind of "spear" from back to front. (Beware, however, since many owners have fitted that "spear" to their Deluxe or evenStandard models just to spiff them up a bit; in that case, you may need tocheck out the engine - it should be the 1198cc on the Super, not the 997cc).

Since spare parts for these models are very rare, you may want to contact theFord 105E Owners' Club in England. (This club also caters to the 123E Super, the 307E and 309E Vans, and the 107E Prefect, by the way). write to MartinLewis, 81 Compton Road, North End, Por~8mouth, England P02 OSR. I do not havea phone number for Mr. Lewis, unfortunately - but I have found it much easierto make inquiries in England by letter ar.~TaY - and the person you're writingto will have a lot more time to wo~k on your request this way.

You may be interested in themajor changes that occurred inthe course of the 105E/123Emodel run. The table at rightwas from the article in ClassicCar Weekly (CCW) which I referredto earlier. The model run wasjust about eight years; it ceasedwith the introduction of theEscort MKI in November 1967. Youwon't find many 105E/123Es inyour local mall parking lot. Ifyou have one, cherish it - it isa rare bird ~ Also, as you mighthave already learned, restoringone is a true labor of love. Thechore of finding new (or good)parts is a daunting one. Butthink of it this way - when youhave it running and looking right, you'll really have SOMETHING ~

Besides, THE FUN IS IN THE SEARCH, ISN'T IT????

105E, l23E, 307E and 309E Owners:

ENGLISH FORD FINALLY GEl'S SOME INK ~

Check out the June 1994 issue of British Car magazine. Did they run out ofstuff to write about or what? Back on page 40 is an article, "1958 FordAnglia," - What did the Yanks think about them then? It's a 2/3-page pieceabout the 100E Anglia of 1958, mostly excerpted from Popular Science somemonth during that year. ~ell-built - but it proved to be a handful in abrisk crosswind," was one of the headlines. The article writer has the opinionthat the Anglia was even more unadorned than the VW Beetle of the same period ~

(Well, excuuuuse me 0 Maybe British Car is getting ready to re-cycle a nicearticle it ran several years ago, chronicling the development of the EnglishFord line of cars. That earlier bit had great photos and statistics of allour favorite cars from the 30s thru the 70s. Maybe they'll do a repeat soon??

BOY, DID WE EVER GET A WRONG NUMBER!!!Around April 2nd, I was reading my April issue of Hemmings Motor News (liMN),and, on page 2611, there it was. A notice of a 3-day autosalvage yard auction (April 15-16-17) at New Labanon, Ohio.No big deal EXCEPT that the ad said there would be EnglishFords at this sale. I checked my calendar. Rats ~ Kerenand I would be attending a wedding in Massachusetts onSaturday, April 16th. I really beat myself up about that tNo way could I get out there (and I just knew that theTreasure-of-Treasures would, of course, be going up forbids there. Good grief t Anyway, I did the next bestthing - I sat down and wrote to four NAEFR members fromsouthwestern Ohio, telling them about the sale, andurging them to attend, if they could. What a loser itwas t Two of the four (that I know of) went. Nobody connected with theauction firm knew anything about English Fords, (although one of them kepttalking about a "Peanut Car," whatever that's supposed to be). Anyway, itwas a bummer tHad it not been for that wedding, I would have driven tenhours each way for a big disappointment. I'm sorry it turned out badly forour members. I should have just left it alone, I suppose - but, how do youknow1? Anyway, how' was YOUR day???

You don't have to kissa frog . J get a royalwelcome at .
