District 1-4A featured some of the area’sbest athletes in a season showcasing plenty ofnext-level talent.

Northwood wide receiver Marquez Ste-venson beat out worthy 5A candidates such asParkway quarterback Keondre Wudtee, aswell as Evangel running back JamarquezaMims, a Southern commit, to earn All-City Of-fensive MVP honors. Stevenson did a little bitof everything on his way to 1,933 total yardsand 17 touchdowns for the Falcons.

He also faced some stiff competition with-in his own district, including Woodlawn sopho-more running back Trivenskey Mosley andBenton quarterback Garrett Hable. The 5-foot-11, 270-pound senior called it the toughestthe district has been in his career and he facedplenty of adversity as Northwood went just 2-5in district play.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Stevenson, who committed to Houston over offers fromBaylor, Mississippi State, Notre Dame andmany power conference schools. “It gave me a

little bit of competition before I go to college.”North DeSoto running back Delmonte Hallearned the nod for All-Area Offensive MVP,and Minden made it a clean sweep for 4A in thetop All-Area awards. Dominant senior defen-sive end Zikerrion Baker won the DefensiveMVP, and coach Spencer Heard took Coach ofthe Year for leading the Crimson Tide to a 9-3season that ended with a 35-34 second-roundloss to Franklinton.

Calvary safety and Oklahoma commitChanse Sylvie prevented a clean sweep forDistrict 1-4A by winning the race for All-CityDefensive MVP. The Cavs were one of six areateams to lose to an eventual state champion inthe quarterfinals or later, and no one got closerthan District 1-5A co-champs Evangel.

Only a heartbreaking overtime loss toCatholic in the semifinals kept All-City Coachof the Year Byron Dawson from guiding adominant young defense to a shot at a 14thstate title in their first season back in 5A. He

said the Eagles played with a chip on theirshoulder all season and got a huge boost from a56-21upset of eventual 5A semifinalist Park-way in the district opener.

    All-City Offensive MVP

Marquez Stevenson, WR, Northwood, Sr.Even with defenses honed in on him as theprimary weapon all season for an inconsistentoffense, Stevenson thrived. He caught 50 passes for 900 yards and eighttouchdowns. But Stevenson wasn’t limited to

just catching passes. He also ran 35 times for445 yards and five more touchdowns.Stevenson’s playmaking ability was evident inthe 1,933 total yards he amassed and 17 touch-downs.Stevenson is committed to the University ofHouston.

    All-City Defensive MVP

Chanse Sylvie, DB, Calvary, Sr.The best player in perhaps the state’s

best secondary packed the physicalpunch at safety to complement shut-down cornerbacks Greedy and LeeLeeWilliams. When opposing offensesinevitably realized running the ballwould be the only way to beat Cal-vary, Sylvie made his presence felt. TheOklahoma commit and Class 2A All-State defensive back posted a team-high 103 tackles for a defense thatnever allowed more than two touch-downs in district play and held 5Achamp Zachary to its lowest total ofthe season in its only loss.

    All-City Coach of the Year

Byron Dawson, EvangelCompeting for a District 1-5A champi-onship against some of the state’s bestteams looked like a tall order for Evangel, considering the Eagles were moving upfrom 2A with a roster featuring more thantwo-thirds freshmen and sophomores. Butthe third-year coach got his team to playdominant defense and, with the help ofoffensive coordinator Denny Duron, util-ized the talents of Jamarqueza Mims tocreate a powerful running attack thatbowled over Parkway 56-21to open districtplay. Evangel won the next four districtgames by at least 24 points before a loss toByrd forced the Eagles to share the title. They still made the Division I playoffs as aNo. 2 seed and would have gone back tothe Dome if not for a remarkable second-half comeback by Catholic to erase a 21-0lead and eventually win 27-21in overtime.
