A Message from Our Pastor Fr. Gregory Spencer

Today, we begin Holy Week by celebrating Palm/Passion Sunday. During these days of Holy Week, let us not forget that we all journey with Jesus on his way to the cross and anticipate his Resurrection on Easter. Today’s liturgy normally begins with the procession of palms to remind us of Jesus’ triumphant entrance into Jerusalem. But this year, we will not be able to do so since we have suspended all public Masses due to the Coronavirus.

But we can certainly follow the events of Jesus’ Passion through the

proclamation of today’s Liturgy of the Word. These events are also proclaimed once again when we celebrate the liturgies of the Triduum—Holy Thursday’s Mass of the Lord’s Supper, the Good Friday of the Lord’s Passion, and the Easter Vigil/ Sunday. In communities that celebrate the Sacraments of Initiation with catechumens, these liturgies take on special importance because they invite the catechumens and the community to enter together into the central mysteries of our faith. These days are indeed profound and holy. Although these catechumens will not be able to participate physically with us during Holy Week, we will determine a later date when they will enter as soon as we are able to resume public Masses. So please remember to keep them in your prayers as well.

In Matthew’s Gospel today, he shows us that Jesus is the fulfillment

of Scripture. Matthew cites and alludes to Scripture to show the events of Jesus’ Passion and death are in accordance with all that was foretold earlier. And if the events were foretold, then God is in control. In addition, Matthew is particularly concerned that the reader does not miss the fact that Jesus is the Suffering Servant of the Old Testament.

Jesus acts in obedience to the Father even in death, so that sins may be forgiven. Matthew makes this clear in the story of the Lord’s Supper. As Jesus blesses the chalice, he says: “. . . for this is my blood of the covenant, which will be shed on behalf of many for the forgiveness of sins.” (Matthew 26:28)

There are many vantage points from which to engage in Jesus’

Passion. In the characters of Matthew’s Gospel, we find reflections of ourselves and the many ways in which we sometimes respond to Jesus. Sometimes we are like Judas, who betrays Jesus and comes to regret it. We are sometimes like Peter, who denies him, or like the disciples, who fell asleep during Jesus’ darkest hour but then act rashly and violently at his arrest. Sometimes we are like Simon, who is pressed into service to help Jesus carry his cross. Sometimes we are like the leaders who fear Jesus or like Pontius Pilate, who washed his hands of the whole affair. Jesus dies so that our sins will be forgiven.

The events of Jesus’ Passion, death, and Resurrection are called the

Paschal Mystery. No amount of study will exhaust or explain the true depth of love that Jesus showed in offering this sacrifice for us. After we have examined and studied today’s readings, we are left with one final task—to meditate on all these events during this Holy Week and on the forgiveness that Jesus’ obedience won for us through the cross and resurrection!

MESSAGE FROM THE PASTOR FOR HOLY WEEK Dear Parishioners:

I greet you in the name of our Lord, God and Savior Jesus Christ as we continue our final journey of Lent and fasting during these difficult and trying times. I miss seeing all of you both at church and school. As you are aware, the effects of the coronavirus pandemic are impacting all aspects of our lives, not the least of which are our liturgical and spiritual lives during this holy season of Lent, especially as we now enter Holy Week. Recently, we have received new guidelines from the Vatican’s Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments along with the Diocese of Raleigh’s Office of Worship concerning liturgy for Holy Week.

Here are some of the ways you can participate at home during Holy Week:

PALM/PASSION SUNDAY, APRIL 5TH As we enter into Holy Week, we begin the week by commemorating Christ’s Messianic entrance into Jerusalem. It saddens me that we cannot gather as we normally do in Church for the solemn Blessing of the Palms, which is to be omitted and observed at some other suitable time (when we are able) later this year. The Church invites all the faithful to participate. You can do so by observing the following:

- At your kitchen table or similar gathering space, assemble your family around the table. Watch the LIVE stream of the Mass on St. Mark Facebook page at 9:30AM in English and 11AM in Spanish. (We are working to bring you LIVE streaming without interruptions, but part of that has to do with our internet provider). - Light a candle - Place a crucifix or cross on the table - Place a bible marked for the following passages:

- 1st reading from Isaiah 50:4-7, - Psalm 22, - 2nd reading from Philippians 2:6-11, - Gospel from Matthew 26:14-27:66.

Also, you can join in by standing for the Gospel, bowing during the Creed when the priest does so, kneeling during the consecration and praying the spiritual communion prayer at the appropriate time, singing with the cantor and praying with the priest. PASCHAL TRIDUUM Because of the uniqueness of the Paschal Triduum as the most solemn of three days in the whole liturgical year, it cannot be transferred to another date/time. HOLY THURSDAY, APRIL 9T H Watch LIVE stream of the Mass on St. Mark Facebook page at 6pm. The washing of the feet, which is already optional, will be omitted this year. As decreed for this year only, the usual final procession with the Blessed Sacrament to a place of repose is to be omitted and the Blessed Sacrament should be kept in the tabernacle after Liturgy of the Eucharist; please understand that NO ADORATION OF THE BLESSED SACRAMENT will take place Holy Thursday this year.

Page 5: All Church Masses and Sacramental Events Have Been ... · arrest. Sometimes we are like Simon, who is pressed into service to help Jesus carry his cross. Sometimes we are like the

GOOD FRIDAY, APRIL 10TH The Commemoration/Celebration of the Lord’s Passion will be LIVE streamed on St. Mark, Facebook page at 3pm. If you have a cross at home, you are invited to venerate the cross when the priest does so.

HOLY SATURDAY, APRIL 11TH Easter Vigil will be LIVE streamed on St. Mark Facebook page at 8pm. The preparation and lighting of the fire is omitted (small fire will be used instead). The paschal candle is lit without procession followed by the singing of the Easter Exultet Proclamation. The Liturgy of the Word takes place; The Baptismal Liturgy is only the renewal of Baptismal Promises (with a small amount of Holy Water ). If you have holy water at home, you may bless yourself at this time. The Rite of Christian Initiation and/or Reception into Full Communion will be rescheduled once restrictions are lifted. Liturgy of the Eucharist takes place after Baptismal Promises.

EASTER SUNDAY, APRIL 12TH Mass for Easter Sunday will be LIVE streamed on St. Mark Facebook page at 9:30am & 11am in Spanish.

OFFERTORY/ CONTRIBUTIONS As you know, our parish is dependent upon your weekly offertory to meet our financial obli-gations, even when we are not able to gather for Mass. For those who are able, please consider continuing your charitable giving to our parish. We have several options for you to do this: - If you have signed up for Realm (our online parish database), you may schedule your

contributions thereby accessing your account. If you would like to set up an account, please contact Dawn Wood in our Church office at email: [email protected] or contact our Realm Project Manager, Mike Krawczyk, at email: [email protected]. You may set up one-time or recurring contributions online by using this link:

- CLICK on the “DONATE” button on our webpage to make your contributions onrealm.org/stmarkcc/give/now. - OR You may mail your weekly offertory donation checks to: St. Mark Catholic Church,

1011 Eastwood Road, Wilmington, NC 28403. - OR You may use our new, secure DROP BOX, a white box located in front of the main entrance to the Church.

Please know how grateful I am for your contributions and most of all for all of your prayers and support. Also, if you would like a Votive candle lit during this time or to offer prayers for someone, please specify that in your donations and we will light a candle for you in the chapel.

‘Christ is risen, alleluia!’ This is the most ancient of Christian greetings on this day of great joy and happiness for all. Easter is not simply one feast among others, but the “Feast of feasts”. Be safe and pray for us as I pray for you.

Palm Sunday Obedience and Humility Matthew 26: 14-27: 66 The Passion of Jesus Jesus emptied himself, taking the form of a slave, being born in human likeness. And being found in human form, he humbled himself and became obedient to the point of death – even death on a cross. (Philippians 2: 7-8) Living the Word: We began Lent by receiving ashes, which are burned from last year’s palms. Today we begin Holy Week, but it is unlike any Holy Week we have celebrated before. What is the start of a Holy Week without attending Mass and getting our palms? Strange? Unreal? Surreal? Well, one thing I do know IS it is the start of Holy Week. And even though we are all home, watching Masses on our computers, etc., we still need to be mindful of what this week means to us as Catholics. Talk to your children about this! Re read the story of the Passion of Christ and if you have older children, assign them parts to read: The Narrator, the Crowd, etc. Hopefully you have a crucifix in your home. Place it where everyone can see as your family reads/listens to this Gospel. With your children, make paper palms and process around the house – inside or out – singing “All Glory Laud and Honor”. Even though we cannot be together celebrating our Sunday liturgy together, remember YOU ARE THE DOMESTIC CHURCH! Make this week holy and sacred in your homes. Questions of the Week: Child: What could you do to show respect for Jesus this week as the church remembers his death and resurrection? Adult: How will you try to imitate the obedience and humility of Christ during this Holy Week? Fun Facts For Catholic Kids: On April 7th, we celebrate the feast of St. John Baptist de la Salle, a priest who had a lot of “new ideas” about teaching over 200 years ago! Instead of teaching one child at a time, he thought it would be a good idea to put several students together in one classroom! His method became popular in France, in Italy, and then all over the world! Say a prayer today for all your teachers – I know you aren’t all together in your classroom, but learning is still going on! Let’s pray for all our teachers, whether preschool, elementary, middle or high school or college! And let’s don’t forget our special teachers – PE, Art, Music, Chorus, Band, and all the elective classes you will get to take when you are older! Matching Saints A Patron Saint brings his or her protection to different types of people, professions, or countries. In this list, match each category with its Patron Saint. And during this week, spend some time looking up different saints and picking one to be YOUR patron saint and ONE for your family! And start praying to that Saint! 1. Saint Francis of Assisi a. Ireland 2. Saint Therese of Lisieux b. throat ailments 3. Saint Joseph c. florists, missions 4. Saint Patrick d. mothers 5. Saint Monica e. workers, fathers 6. Saint Michael f. lost causes 7. Saint Blaise g. lost items 8. Saint Anthony of Padua h. animals 9. Saint Jude i. the Americas 10. Our Lady of Guadalupe j. policemen

Help Fill the Sharing Tree with HOPE During this time of unprecedented need for Hope, the Sharing Tree Ministry is taking on a mission of spreading Hope to EVERYONE it can virtually touch.

Effective immediately, the Sharing Tree Ministry will be collecting prayers for Hope to be lovingly displayed on the Sharing Tree for all to see.

Each prayer of Hope received will be handwritten on paper hearts by members of the ministry who will scan and email the heart for posting on the Tree. Photos of the Tree growing with hearts will be taken and displayed on the website and Church bulletin. The Sharing Tree will grow daily with hearts until we are able to return to our church for worship together. When that wonderful day occurs, the Hearts on the Tree will be taken down and given to Sharing Tree Supporters and Recipients as tokens of the spiritual connection and love we shared during this time of need.

Let’s fill the Sharing Tree with Hope!!! Send the Sharing Tree Ministry: 1 (one) sentence prayer of Hope via email at the address below. Please keep your prayer for Hope anonymous

and limited to 1 sentence. Our Lord knows us and protects us. No personal contact information will be displayed on prayers of Hope. Your prayer will be transcribed onto a paper heart that will be placed on the Sharing Tree during this Coronavirus Pandemic.

Email 1 sentence prayer to: [email protected]

When we are able to physically meet again, the Sharing Tree Ministry will return to fulfilling its mission of distributing kits to impoverished families. Please keep the Sharing Tree in mind if you have any excess cleaning, hygiene, and paper goods available at that time, The Sharing Tree with the Catholic Charities truck will be collecting. Let's Hope and pray that day comes soon.

God bless you and stay safe.

The Saint Michael the Archangel Organization would like to invite all of Catholics to participate in the ONE MILLION ROSARIES FOR UNBORN BABIES prayer event for 3 days, May 1st, 2nd and 3rd, we are asked to pray at least one Rosary each day for an end to the surgical and non-surgical killing of unborn human persons. Raymond Cardinal Burke encourages all the faithful to seek the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe...by praying the Rosary for the protection of unborn human life through the campaign of the Saint Michael the Archangel Organization. In order to get an accurate count of the number of Rosaries that will be said, we are all encouraged to register the Rosaries we will pray online at www.SaintMichaelTheArchangelOrganization.org. For each Rosary you pray for this intention during these three days, enter that number online at the St. Michael site. Again, we will be praying for an end to abortion on the first three days of May, so that we may offer a million Rosaries to God and His holy angel, St. Michael, to save our precious unborn. For more information, please contact Judi Paparozzi at [email protected].

A Message From Parishioner and Our Former Deacon—Deacon Jim! During this Coronavirus time, which is a problem both for the Church and for its members, it is necessary for all of us to behave differently. The priests of the Diocese are saying masses before cameras and to an empty Church in order to meet parishioner’s religious needs. My wife, Lyne have been married for almost 68 years. She is presently in Davis long term care because I can’t care for her at home. Davis and every other nursing home have restricted visitors. I used to go every day from breakfast to dinner, relieved by our daughter after dinner. We got an extension cord for the telephone and Lyne is able to see us through the room’s one window and talk over the phone to us. I go every morning at 10:30 and Kathy, our daughter, goes about 3:30pm. Our four sons call every day. Lyne appreciates those calls and “face to face” visits. For those of you who have been parishioners for a while, I served here as a Deacon until Msgr. Hendrick transferred to St. Therese at which time he asked me to go with him in order to handle the missal for him. When I served here Fr. Greg was a Parochial Vicar. I served Msgr. Hendrick at St. Therese until he was transferred to Southern Pines. I was ordained by Bishop George Neiderauer (who later became the archbishop of San Francisco, now deceased) with the permission of Bishop Gossman, becoming the first incardinated deacon in the Diocese of Raleigh. I retired at 89 in 2018 from St. Therese at the Easter Vigil. I have served St. Marks a couple of times since, notably at Ash Wednesday.

Messages From Our Ministry Leaders #StMarkParishILMStrong #We’reStillHere #TogetherInChrist

In this time of COVID-19 pandemic, let us, together with Our Lady's Rosary Makers of St Mark Parish, take refuge to our Mother Mary, the Mother of God, as our source of Hope, and to Jesus, our Lord, as we trust in His Mercy. We are offering each rosary we make for the end of this virus, for the healing of those afflicted, and for the souls of those who died of this horrible virus that they Rest in Peace with our Creator in His Kingdom.

Here we share our Prayer before we make our rosaries. PRAYER: "As I string these beads to make a rosary, I think of You, dear Blessed Mother. In of themselves, they are mere plastic and of little worldly worth. I wonder whose hands will receive them and invoke Your sweet name; Who will pray them and transform them from plastic into a spiritual offering of untold worth. And so each time I complete a Rosary, I pray that a pair of hands unknown to me but known to You will join in praise of You. Hear us Blessed Mother as we join in spiritual unity praying, 'Hail Mary, full of grace ..... Our Lady’s Rosary Makers Ministry—Josie Mapile
