2017-2018 HIGHLIGHTS UNIVERSITY OF ILLINOIS
Since August 2014, the Illini Success initiative has gathered data about the post-graduation pursuits of bachelor’s degree recipients at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. The project tells the Illinois story of graduate successes, demonstrating a wide variety of paths and destinations, with high quality information, updated annually.
This report provides a snapshot of the experiences of bachelor’s degree graduates who graduated in August 2017, December 2017, and May 2018. Those who also receive master’s degrees during these semesters are excluded from analyses. The majority of data (65%) came from a campus-wide survey, where graduates shared their post-graduation status at regular intervals for six months following their graduation. Data were also gathered from the National Student Clearinghouse, college reports, and a limited use of LinkedIn profiles. More details on how data were collected and analyzed are available in the methods section at the end of this report.

Annual Salary of Full-Time Employed GraduatesAcross our 2017-2018 graduating class, 55% of full-time employed respondents reported salaries, averaging $60,885. In addition, 21% reported signing bonuses, with a median of $5,000.
* For Colleges with fewer than 10 employed graduates and fewer than 5 graduates reporting salary in 2017-2018, we combine responses with the 2016-2017 class in order to provide salary information while protecting the confidentiality and privacy of survey respondents. The “employed graduates” and “graduates reporting salary” numbers with asterisks reflect totals across these two years.
-- If fewer than 5 graduates report signing bonus in 2017-2018, the table indicates this with dashes as signing bonus information cannot be shared.

Geographic Locations
Experiential Learning
As shared by 4,541 graduates, the majority of our 2017-2018 class chose a first destination within the state of Illinois, with an additional 33% selecting other U.S. destinations. Some of the most common U.S. destinations included states such as California, New York, Missouri, and Washington. An additional 2% of graduates indicated a variety of international locations across the world, including Australia, Austria, China, Ghana, Italy, Russia, South Korea, Switzerland, Tanzania, Turkey, United Arab Emirates, and United Kingdom.
Experiential learning activities connect classroom knowledge to the world in which students live and work. These experiences help students explore career and personal interests, develop transferable skills, expand networks and references, and strengthen their portfolios as they prepare to transition beyond their bachelor’s degrees. 89% of our 2017-2018 graduates reported participating in experiential learning. Here is a snapshot of how they gained experience, as shared by 3,108 graduates.

Nameshia TettehTechnical Systems Management, May 2018
Professor Harper, the former Department Head for Technical
Systems Management, was very helpful in my decision of a major.
He pushed us – got me out of my comfort zone, while always being
encouraging and supportive. For example, he taught a welding class,
and that was something I definitely wasn’t used to! He would go
the extra mile to explain or demonstrate something again,
so I could really understand.

GRADUATE STORIES
Isaac BeyerKinesiology, December 2017
I can confidently say Illinois provided me with all of the
resources needed to move forward with my academic career,
including great friends, solid curriculum, and devoted faculty...
I received great guidance and mentorship from the Kinesiology faculty.
For instance, Dr. Rice helped me choose my career (by) sharing
her personal experiences as both a faculty member and a practicing
physical therapist… I am now pursuing a Doctorate in Physical
Therapy at Bradley University.

GRADUATE STORIES
Kareem RogersManagement, August 2017
I came from a family of entrepreneurs, and had always
aimed to make this a part of my life. I wanted to learn how
to manage people, how to run a business, to talk persuasively,
to negotiate, and how to make sure my business performance is
succeeding exponentially. Completing a Management major with
a concentration in Entrepreneurship at Gies College of Business,
I found this and more.

GRADUATE STORIES
Cassandra Chlebowski Special Education, May 2018
After graduation, I decided to pursue an Academic Support
Teacher position at St. Edward Central Catholic High School. I was
drawn to this role because Catholic schools do not have state-mandated
special education programs, and the principal at this school was
passionate about starting one. I’m excited to be a part of the team
that is creating and implementing a new curriculum. We are helping
students, who previously could not attend this school, to work toward
their own path to the graduation stage. It is a challenging position,
but I am confident that Illinois prepared me for it.

I currently work at Boeing as a Structural Analysis Engineer…
on the P-8 Poseidon program. This is a 737 developed for the U.S.
Navy that is used for maritime reconnaissance and tracking submarine
activity in the world’s oceans. Much of what I do expands upon the material
I learned in my aerospace structures classes [at Illinois].

GRADUATE STORIES
Lavine Leyu LuoTheatre, May 2018
I was drawn to the Stage Management program (in Theatre) –
the curriculum looked very attractive to me… In 2016, I served
as the assistant stage manager for a performance of Dontrell,
Who Kissed the Sea, which was performed in the Studio Theatre
at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts. This experience
transformed me career-wise. I discovered that I want to focus on
non-profit work and visual theatre.

GRADUATE STORIES
Catherine WiegandIntegrative Biology, December 2017
My experiences at Illinois helped me to explore interesting directions I can take with my biology degree. I participated in the pre-Med club, shadowed professionals in the small animal ER at the vet school, and supported research for two years in a professor’s laboratory. In the research role, I helped a team examine the changes in the size of mosquito populations after a change in storm drains in a region of Illinois. I enjoyed getting to know people in each of these environments, and discovering that there were so many potential career paths that I never realized existed.

GRADUATE STORIES
Hana HongJournalism, May 2018
If I had to attribute the beginning of my career path to one moment, I have to thank Journalism Professor Walter Harrington, who taught a course called Great Books of Journalism. I went to his office hours one day to discuss a paper I had written for his class, but ended up chatting with him about what I wanted to do after graduation. Although fashion and beauty wasn’t his expertise, he did some research before the next class period and found a scholarship for me to apply to. Referrals from this interaction are what sparked my first off-campus experience with the industry…
Now I am an Editorial Beauty and Health Assistant for Marie Claire Magazine. I love being able to do the two things that I enjoy most–writing with fashion and beauty.

GRADUATE STORIES
Desree McNairSocial Work, May 2018
I always wanted to be in a helping profession, but what steered me to a Social Work major was the desire to work with groups of people – with communities, families, and the social systems that surround and impact an individual. Once I was accepted into Illinois and took my first few social work classes, I was completely sold.

ILLINI SUCCESS | ALL CAMPUS UNDERGRADUATE | 2017-2018 REPORT28
The Illini Success initiative documents the post-graduate outcomes of bachelor’s degree recipients from the
University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. This report focuses on experiences of Illinois students who graduated
during the 2017-2018 academic year, including August 2017, December 2017, and May 2018 graduation cohorts.
Those who also receive master’s degrees during these semesters are excluded from analyses. Lists of graduates
were initially drawn from University records during the semester of graduation, and were finalized 10 weeks
after graduation to represent an accurate picture of the graduating class for each cohort.

METHODS
Data Collection
The primary method for collecting graduate outcomes data was an online survey administered by Illini Success team members at the Center for Innovation in Teaching and Learning at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Several strategies were used to distribute the survey including: centralized emails, college-specific emails, requests during cap and gown distribution for commencement events, and visits to capstone classes and college events. Requests to complete the survey were sent approximately 1 month before graduation, at graduation, 3-months post-graduation, and 6-months post-graduation.
Direct surveys of graduates were our primary and preferred source of data. However, when survey data were not available, other sources of information were considered. For example, data on continuing education enrollment was obtained from the National Student Clearinghouse and verifiable graduate outcomes reported by employers or gathered by colleges were accepted into the data set. Finally, we incorporated a very limited use of LinkedIn profiles after a careful study of the quality of this data. We used the HEPData CareerAppend service to gather graduate information from publically available online sources in December 2018. We incorporated this
data for only those graduates who: (a) did not have survey responses, National Student Clearinghouse data, employer reports, or college reports of their outcomes, (b) had employment or graduate school data from a LinkedIn website, and (c) posted the start-date for their most current position at least one month after their graduation month. The rationale for these decisions came from a study conducted by the research team at The Career Center. Findings of that study are available by request. As can be seen in Table M1, the majority of the data for this report came from survey responses (65%), while a smaller amount came from secondary sources (35%). In total, we have knowledge of the outcomes of 75% of 2017-2018 bachelor’s degree graduates from Illinois.
We collected data for six months past the May 2018 graduation date, closing data collection at the end of November 2018. For August and December 2017 graduates, we accepted information through November 2018, but did not rigorously pursue responses after their initial six-month time periods. Graduate numbers and knowledge rates by cohort can be seen in Table M2.

ILLINI SUCCESS | ALL CAMPUS UNDERGRADUATE | 2017-2018 REPORT 29
The privacy and confidentiality of Illinois graduates is
highly respected and protected throughout the Illini
Success initiative. We greatly appreciate the willingness of
Illinois graduates to share their outcomes information, and
make every effort to ensure their comfort and confidence
at every stage of participation. All data efforts related to
the Illini Success initiative are approved by the University
of Illinois Institutional Review Board. A limited number of
research team members are granted access to the data.
All personally identifying information is removed from
presentations of data. To further protect confidentiality,
outcomes data is only reported in aggregate, for groups
of 10 graduates or more.
In college and major salary analysis tables, in cases where
we have fewer than 10 employed graduates and fewer than
5 graduates reporting a salary in 2017-2018, we combine
responses with the 2016-2017 class in order to provide

salary information while protecting the confidentiality
and privacy of survey respondents. All cases where
this occurs are indicated with a star (*) and “employed
graduates” and “graduates reporting salary” reflect the
total number across the two years. For colleges or majors
where fewer than 5 graduates report a signing bonus
in 2017-2018, dashes are used to indicate that signing
bonus information cannot be shared.
Illini Success projects only identify graduates when they
give permission to share their information or likeness.
When they do so, graduates state specifically what they
want to share, and nothing beyond this is released. For
example, the Illini Success website presents graduate
success stories with photographs and personalized
narratives. Being highlighted on the website is voluntary
and individuals sign a talent release form to participate.

ILLINI SUCCESS | ALL CAMPUS UNDERGRADUATE | 2017-2018 REPORT30
Analyses in this report were informed by standards and guidelines set by the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES, 2012). Unless otherwise noted, findings are presented by unique graduates without duplication. A few tables present results by academic major. In these tables, duplicate counts exist because graduates can receive dual degrees from more than one major. When a graduate received degrees from more than one major, they were counted in both majors.
To support ease of reading for various audiences, we excluded non-respondents from each graph, table, and data point (rather than including sections of non-respondents with each question). This decision was made because respondent numbers change throughout the report as different graduates had access to different survey questions. For example, graduates who selected “continuing education” as their primary status did not receive survey questions about “employment.” Throughout the report, the number of respondents (N) is provided with the data for each survey question.
METHODS CONTINUED
Data Analysis and Presentation
Finally, there is some grouping of majors in this report in order to represent relationships across academic units, to be able to present data for small majors while protecting confidentiality of graduates, or to efficiently and effectively communicate results without overwhelming our readers with detail. Please see the tables in the concluding pages of this report, which outline how majors are represented for each college, and show where combinations have occurred.
Terms and Categories
To understand analyses in this report, it is helpful to understand some key terminology that is used to define outcomes and categorize variables. When completing the online survey, Illinois graduates were asked about their plans following graduation and were given the following response options: working full-time, working part-time, engaged in military service, engaged in volunteer service, seeking employment, enrolling in continuing education, seeking continuing education, unemployed and not seeking, and I’d rather not answer. For ease of interpretation in this overview report, we combine these nine response options into the following six categories:
• Employed, which includes: (a) working full-time, (b) working part-time, and (c) engaged in military service • Continuing education • Volunteer / service • Seeking employment • Seeking education • Other, which includes: (a) unemployed and not seeking and (b) I’d rather not answer
Little detail was lost in combining groups. In the employment section, small percentages of respondents pursued military careers (1%) or part-time employment (2%). Similarly, a small percent of respondents indicated that they were “not seeking employment or additional education” (<1%) or would “rather not answer” (1%). Graduates were invited to select responses regarding their post-graduation plans in two ways. First, they selected all statuses that applied to them. For example, a graduate may report both working full-time and being engaged in volunteer work in the community. Second, graduates were asked to select one primary status that best represents their main focus after graduation. Continuing our example, the graduate may identify working full-time as a primary status. This report focuses on graduates’ reported primary statuses.
Further, this report identifies graduates who have “secured a first destination” following graduation. We define “securing a first destination” as obtaining employment, enrolling in a continuing education program, and/or engaging in volunteer service as a primary status after graduation.
