Part 2: Responding in Love for the Gifts of God: This week we invite you to respond to your personal experience of gratitude. What will you do to bring the love of God to those who are near to you, as well as those you cannot reach directly?

Last week, we invited you to consider your personal experience of gratitude—when it comes to you, how you recognize it, how it

feels—and, in particular, the way in which it helps you to understand and experience God.

Recall the psalm that grounded our invitation:

I love the LORD,who listened to my voice in supplication,Who turned an ear to me on the day I called. (Psalm 116: 1-2)How can I repay the LORDfor all the great good done for me?I will raise the cup of salvationand call on the name of the LORD.I will pay my vows to the LORDin the presence of all his people. (Psalm 116: 12-14)

This week, we’re exploring the second portion of this excerpt. The psalmist is describing how he gives of himself, first through his own action to bring the kingdom of God to those he can reach personally, then with a portion of his material wealth to enable others to minister to those he cannot reach directly.

Note that all of this is ministry to others. His gratitude to God moves him to make the kingdom of God real for those in need. Some he can reach directly and he will “lift up the cup of salvation” with them and for them—he will share his faith and minister to them. Others are distant and he cannot reach them directly. This is where he must rely on others who act on his behalf and minister with his support. He makes a pledge and “pays his vows.”

In a way, the psalmist is living out the two essential engines of parish life—giving of self and giving of wealth.

Giving of self is simple enough in concept. We have desire, we have grace, we have talent or skill, and we have time. Our parish and our communities need what only we can provide. For each of us, there is a “you-shaped hole” that only we can fill. Yes, modern life imposes many demands on our time and attention and strength. Yet, when we ponder our gratitude for God and allow His grace to come, what possibilities emerge to “lift up the cup of salvation” for those nearby?

Giving of wealth, admittedly, can be vexing. Just as there are demands on our time and attention, there are demands for our money and material goods. Some days it can seem overwhelming, yet we make choices and commitments to help. When the psalmist “pays my vows,” he is honoring his commitment. When we ponder our own gratitude for God, what inspiration does He offer to pay your vows?

Just as He did with the psalmist, God is calling each one of us to give of both self and wealth. And, we are called to respond just as the psalmist did—with

unwavering reliance on our gratitude to God and the trust in Him that moves us to respond.

For the pathway of What Return Can I Make? the shepherd is Father Paul Schenck, assisted by Parish Business Manager Tracy Kovaleski. Together they can help you explore what it means to make a return to the Lord and answer any related questions you may have. You may contact Father Schenck at [email protected], or Tracy at [email protected]. Also, we invite you to take a look at the supplemental content on our parish website, www.steas.net/Pastoral-Plan.

What Return Can I Make? is the pathway for you to personally respond to others in gratitude for the Lord’s kindness and care in your own life. It is the path for reminding each one of us yet again to place all that we have at His service.

Each week provides a different thought given by a different presenter, all designed to help us focus on the spiritual aspects of LentMarch 11—The Joy of Lent, by Susanna CaroselliLent is usually observed as a time of great solemnity and introspection, but there are treasures to be found in these forty days that lead to great joy. Looking together at great works of art, we will seek to find the comfort, gladness, and delight that are available to all of us in this holy season. Susanna Bede Caroselli is an art historian who writes and speaks on religious art.

OUR PARISH was targeted by an aggressive malware attack last week. Thanks to the support of the Diocesan IT Department (your Diocesan Annual Campaign dollars at work), the malware was removed, critical information recovered, and a plan for restoration put into place. Questions? Contact Tracy in the parish office, 717-697-2614.

TO CONSECRATE means to make holy or to dedicate to a higher purpose—the word consecration literally means “association with the sacred.” Consecration to the Holy Family involves deciding that you are not only dedicating your family to the Holy Family’s intercession but also acknowledging that your family is sacred. An act of consecration to the Holy Family, made as a family, is a renewal of your baptismal consecration. It is a deliberate choice to follow Jesus Christ more fully, with the help of Mary and Joseph, and to set your family apart for God.ALL PARISH FAMILIES are invited by our Knights of Columbus Council #4068 to participate in praying the prayer of Consecration to the Holy Family during the 9 o’clock Mass on Sunday, March 22. For more information, please contact Dave Racculia, [email protected] or Donna Nebistinsky, [email protected], 717-697-6929.

REGISTER NOW for the 2020 Diocese of Harrisburg Men’s Conference, March 28 at Bishop McDevitt High School. The theme is: Catholic Men: Defenders of the Faith. Register at www.hbgdiocese.org/men. A Lenten Meditation before Mass

We don’t often hear the word beloved. But, listen closely to the readings, and you will hear God speak this word—of His beloved Son, and of us.

It’s easy to believe God sees only our sins. Failure and shame give us reason to hide, to close ourselves off from Him. We can’t possibly be worthy of being called beloved. But, we are!

Before I left from a recent visit, my grandson Sebastian wanted snuggle time. He climbed onto my lap, took my face in his hands, and looked into my eyes with pure love, melting my heart as I held back tears. In the quiet of my long drive home, with tears now falling, I realized that this is exactly the way the Father looks at me.

Allow your heart to be melted, and even tears to flow, and see the Father looking at you now with pure love. Stop hiding or closing yourself off from Him. He has made us worthy of so great a love as His. Receive it openly and fully, and He will be well pleased with you, His beloved son or daughter.

GREETING

As Mass begins, the priest calls us to acknowledge our sins and then invites us into prayer. In the opening prayer, or Collect, the priest gathers together all of our personal prayers and offers them to God. Take a moment to call to mind those things on your heart right now. When the priest says or chants, “Let us pray,” join with everyone around you in offering all our prayers to God.

WHAT SPOKE TO YOU in the message for today?

SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT this week:

my notes

WHAT MIGHT HAPPEN if you would take this to heart?

PRAYER OF THE FAITHFUL

PROFESSION OF FAITHI believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth,of all things visible and invisible.I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God,born of the Father before all ages.God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father;through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven,(At the words that follow, up to and including and became man, all bow).and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man.For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate,

he suffered death and was buried, and rose again on the third day in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heavenand is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the deadand his kingdom will have no end.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son,who with the Father and the Son is adored and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets.I believe in one, holy, catholic and apostolic Church.I confess one Baptism for the forgiveness of sinsand I look forward to the resurrection of the deadand the life of the world to come. Amen.

HOMILY

A READING FROM THE HOLY GOSPEL ACCORDING TO MATTHEW Matthew 17:1-9then from the cloud came a voice that said,“This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased;listen to him.”When the disciples heard this, they fell prostrateand were very much afraid. But Jesus came and touched them, saying,“Rise, and do not be afraid.”And when the disciples raised their eyes, they saw no one else but Jesus alone.

As they were coming down from the mountain,Jesus charged them, “Do not tell the vision to anyoneuntil the Son of Man has been raised from the dead.”

Jesus took Peter, James, and John his brother, and led them up a high mountain by themselves. And he was transfigured before them;his face shone like the sunand his clothes became white as light. And behold, Moses and Elijah appeared to them, conversing with him. Then Peter said to Jesus in reply,“Lord, it is good that we are here.If you wish, I will make three tents here, one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah.”While he was still speaking, behold,a bright cloud cast a shadow over them,
