The bike...

Being inside a motorcycle helmet on a journey is often a lonely

place but one day last month - while I was riding in to Alicante

- I had a guest, an unwelcome one, in a stripy jumper…and as

usual he had attitude. As the wasp casually sauntered across

(about an inch from my nose) my visor I remained calm (ish)

and put the brakes on steadily (that´s as steadily as if I’d just

dropped an anchor of the back of the bike) and brought all

three of us to a halt at the side of the road. I´d like to take

this opportunity to apologise to the Alicante council highway

department for the 100ft black line recently added to the N332

alongside the railway line and to the many distracted drivers

heading in (and out of Alicante) for what must have looked like

a bloke doing karate at the side of the road and whose oppo-

nent was a crash helmet…

Illiterate eBook

I bought an eBook reader last month (like a Kindle…but not a

Kindle) and I must say that the staff at Corte Ingles in Alicante

were about as helpful as a prison guard whose just had his

night off cancelled and got the shift looking after Gary Glit-

ter. I took it back the next day after I found out that the only

place I could download books from in Spain was the Corte

Ingles website and 99.9% of those are in Spanish (if I’d been

in the States I could get thousands, but I wasn´t) although the

salesman was really appreciative when I informed him of the

limited availability of reading material for the product.

The early bird...

I also found myself in Murcia City last month (a day after the

floods) and had a look around. Lovely place, and some strange

people including the man who was riding a bicycle and whom

I overtook twice…and I was walking. And the woman at the

Hostal I stayed in who was very efficient with the early morn-

ing wake-up call (6.30am) – even reminding me which way

the station was and what time the next one left - which would

have been really admirable had she not got the wrong door – I

was catching the afternoon bus. Still, up and about I took a

stroll to the lovely station and had an early morning coffee on

the platform, and finally appreciated the alarm call hiccup as

the station was a great way to start the day, and watch the

city come to life. If you get the chance to go I’d recommend it

and you can read more about my stay (and Murcia) inside this

month´s magazine.

lease allow me to put in my disclaimer before I

start. The bank I am going to mention was informed about this article and has approved it and kindly an-swered my questions. The aim is to clarify doubts you may have had.

The CAM, one of the most popular

(savings) banks was taken over by

SOLBANK very recently. An impor-

tant number of readers of this maga-

zine have been banking with the CAM.

What will change due to this takeover,

how will it affect me?

Here the answers to my questions

from the horse’s mouth:

Will my account number stay the

same?

No, it is a new bank now. Not only will

the account number change but also

the number of the bank, branch and

the sorting code. However, the bank

insists that the change will be done

without affecting the customer.

What about my direct debits, do I

have to notify the service compa-

nies?

No, all direct debits will be changed

automatically and bank internally.

Will my conditions change? What

do I do if I do not agree with the

conditions?

Signed conditions for mortgages will

not be altered. Interest payments and

maintenance and administration fees

may vary. The new conditions have

been sent to the CAM-clients and will

come into effect on 10 December.

Should you disagree you may termi-

nate your contract at no additional

charge simply by notifying this before

the date it comes into effect.

What about my funds?

They will change their name only, the

rest will remain the same.

CHELSEA STUTTERING WITH THE MANCHESTER DUO NOT FAR BEHIND THIS IS WHY WE LOVE THE PREMIERSHIP!

The biggest talking point was the match between Chelsea and rivals Man-

chester United. While decisions through the game that affected the final

outcome may have been contentious and possibly unfair, what we can tell

is that these are probably the two best teams in England right now.

For the first sixty minutes we were watching a terrific game of immense

quality. Chelsea’s midfield trio were playing spectacularly against Manches-

ter United’s brilliant attacking force. For those who did not witness this

incredible match, Chelsea fought back to 2-2 after going behind only for the

referee to send off Ivanovic and Torres to send them to nine men against

United’s eleven. When Manchester United was awarded a goal that ap-

peared to be scored from an offside position, the game was over, meaning

that they closed the gap to one point.

I should also mention the equally enthralling Merseyside Derby between

Everton and Liverpool that ended 2-2. I was honoured to watch such a

superb game and even though Liverpool will be angry not to have been

awarded a late winner, it was still a superb game that oozed class. It was

a brilliant watch.

The third (realistic) title challenger is Man City. They have been interesting,

and have had to rely on Edin Dzeko as a super-sub on numerous occasions.

How often have we seen the Citizens coming back from 1-0 down to win

1-2 this season? While their late goals have gotten them level with United

and one point behind Chelsea, they certainly seem the weakest of the three

challengers so far. Of course, we have to remember that we are talking

about the current champions. Teams don’t become bad over night and even

if they aren’t playing at their best, they are registering points on the table.

Looking at how the seasons gone, I’m fairly confident of seeing Reading rel-

egated. The other two are more difficult to decide. I would say QPR but they

do have very talented players. Southampton has played well and has some

quality players. I see the bottom three being Reading, Norwich and South-

ampton. Norwich may have registered a stunning win at Arsenal but I think

it was just a fluke. They have looked woeful in their previous games and I

don’t think that their players are as good as some of the other poorer clubs.

The middle of the table is quite predictable, although I do expect to see Liv-

erpool and Newcastle to rise up the table at the expense of West Ham and

West Brom, who have both performed above expectations so far. Expect

Stoke, Sunderland, Swansea, Fulham and West Ham to have comfortable,

mid-table seasons. They are solid clubs that should and probably will stay

up.

I still believe it’s too early to pick one title winner, but picking the four

champions league spot teams is an easier challenge. Any of my regular

readers will know that my predictions have not been perfect so far, but I’m

going to go ahead and predict Man City, Man Utd, Chelsea and (cue drum

roll) Arsenal. Yes, I’m picking the Gunners to pull it off again. How many

times have we seen Arsenal looking shabby at the start and everybody

writing them off? Last season they had been thrashed 8-1 by Man Utd at

this stage! Who would have thought that they would finish 3rd after all of

that! Arsenal are a brilliant side led by one of the best managers in the EPL,

they’ll be fine.

Catch you later in December!

STILL the cheapest advertising around- TEL. 606 540 4088

not everyone and will have pay taxes on their decla-

ration and the odds are that if you’ve retired here in

Spain and are receiving your pension from abroad,

you might not have to pay depending on certain

requirements.

If you have retired to Spain and stay in the country

more than 183 days then you too must declare your

income here and not in the UK. You will also benefit

from the special International Treaty between Spain

and the UK. There are still an awful lot of people liv-

ing in Spain but still declaring their incomes in the UK

which means that could be missing out on saving a

lot of money just because

they don’t realise that they can do their declaration

here and take advantage of the fiscal benefits such

as inheritance tax for residents, or just paying less

taxes, for example.

Why?Obviously the Spanish government needs taxes and,

if you are receiving an income you need to be legal.

Even if you know there will be nothing to pay – you’ll

get yourself in the system (which, trust me on this

one, only make life easier) so when the day comes

that someone (we’ll call him ‘Johnny Foreigner’)

dies in Spain Johnny’s family will have a simple task

dealing with the fiscal (the Will etc.) matters than

someone who has never gone into the system.

ExceptionsTo keep it simple (remember it’s me writing this…)

here are some exceptions to the rule of ‘Having to

declare’ but remember also what I said earlier about

there being no harm (only benefits) in getting into the

system.

If you earn less than 22,000€ annually (from one em-

ployer and are already having tax deducted) or (if you

have incomes from several place) that none of those

exceed 1,500€ annually.

If you have received profits from shares or dividends

of less than 1,600€ per year (this even applies if you

have, for example, sold a car for a profit privately).

Salaries or incomes below 11,200€ (usually pen-

sioners) are exempt but remember also that if you

are employed your employer is obliged to deduct a

minimum of 15% from your wage packet to withhold

for the taxman here in Spain. If that does not happen,

because your pension comes from the UK and is

over 11.200 euros (and it has not been tax-deducted

in Spain) - even though you only have one pension,

you must to declare your income in Spain.

Compensation from a road traffic accident is also

exempt from the tax office but again – it’s worth

declaring it anyway.

Anyone receiving unemployment benefit (up to

15,000€ - who’s getting that much..?!) is also free

from deductions.

How?To make sure you don’t need to pay tax on your

income, or indeed reduce your bill at the end of the fi-

nancial year, it’s highly recommended that you speak

to someone who is experienced in the Spanish tax

system – or you could end up paying more than you

need to!

Pedro told me that there are often an array of options

for people to reduce their tax bill (or even pay nothing

at all) if their case is looked at professionally and

with an experienced eye. For example, someone who

has their parents living in the same house can have

certain funds deducted from their end of year tax bill

as can anyone who has perhaps had to adapt their

house for disabled access.

As ever, with any tax office, things are a little more

complicated than we’d like but by dealing with

someone in the know it often works out far simpler

(and less expensive) to have someone who knows

what they are doing look after those (very) important

fiscal matters that can often become an expensive

nightmare in the wrong hands – ours.

From my own experience, the fee charged to make

my declaration was less than Pedro managed to

reduce my tax bill after showing me exactly what I

could and couldn’t claim and therefore the cost of

doing it properly has cost me nothing…in fact I’ve

made a little on the deal, now…do I declare that…?

If you have any questions or queries about the

upcoming ‘Renta’ and whether indeed you should be

declaring your income – call either Pedro or Ignacio

and they’ll put you straight. And the benefit for All

Abroad readers is that they’ll give you first consulta-

tion free – so what have you got to lose apart from a

headache from those piles of paper!

KEEPING IT SIMPLE IN SPAINWe all want an easy (ish)

life here in Spain but not

always that easy is it?

Especially when it comes

to the man with the rubber

stamp. And let’s face it,

the tremendous amount of

paperwork currently run-

ning through the Spanish

bureaucracy system not

only brings (several) South

American countries’ rain

forests down, but assur-

edly their unemployment

numbers too. But that’s the

system we have to work

with but with some expert

help you can make sure

that you’re not one of the

ones rushing to the bank

on the 20th of June to pay a

tax bill at the last minute, or

worse still a fine.

With the annual tax dec-

laration (Renta) deadline

coming soon, on 30th June,

anyone with an income

should be getting their

declaration in order (if

you really want that ‘easy’

life) so we asked Alicante

lawyers, Ignacio and Pedro

to once again step in and

explain just what the ‘Renta’

is and who should be get-

ting the pens out to fill in a

form or two.

Who?

Everyone who has an

income while living here in

Spain needs to make a dec-

laration whether it is from

a salary or from a pension

in another country. Now

before you start worrying,

About Pedro & IgnacioThe two spent a year at South-ampton Institute of interna-tional law so it’s no surprise that they speak English so well. Later, having studied law together at Alicante university, Pedro and Ignacio teamed up and formed the highly success-ful Pellicer & Heredia Solicitors (based in the same building as the British Consulate) and using their understanding of British people have built a firm of three offices (so far) with a fourth opening in Ciudad Quesada very soon –and all the staff speak English, very handy.

The taxman cometh…Dave Bull

discovers the easy way to live

a trouble-free (as far as the Tax man is

concerned) life in Spain.

not everyone and will have pay taxes on their decla-

ration and the odds are that if you’ve retired here in

1 A new body clock. If you really plan to join in with the Span-ish then you’ll have to start considering that the time you are hearing ‘last orders’ in the UK is roughly the time of night that you’ll be just starting your Spanish eve-ning. Things happen later here so when some-one asks you to come along and see a live band perform, don’t plan on eating your dinner by 6.30 and getting out of the door by eight o’clock. No here in Spain things tend to be just warming up around mid-night and into full swing by the early hours. So grab a siesta and then a fiesta!

2 A barometer.Probably, you’d have thought that you won’t be needing any of that stuff clutter-ing up the hallway of your new home in Spain just because it’s always sunny here. Bring it over and see how long it lasts be-cause after about a month of looking at it and the little arrow always pointing to ‘sunny’ you’re going to think it’s broken anyway! What you will learn to appreciate in Spain is that when the Spanish talk about the weather it is a very short conversation in-deed. It goes something like this,Brit: ‘hi, looks like rain towards the end of the week.’Spaniard: ‘Sunny today, adios.’All that matters in Spain is what the weather is like now, a short comment such as, ‘what a lovely day’, and that’ll do – so you’ll save on words too!

3 The kettle.Ok, this one may be a little controversial to Brits but you really are going to be spending a whole lot more time outdoors when you move to a new home in Spain. That’s the life, outside on the terrace, with friends or perhaps at a café bar supping the superb coffee on offer here – far more sociable don’t you think. Plus it’s cheap (around 1€ a cup) and…the added benefit of less tannin in your diet means you’re al-lowed to drink more wine! Ok I made that last bit up but there’s bound to be a report somewhere that back that claim, so just enjoy! But for that morning cuppa, again on the terrace, watching the sun come up to warm the day (yet again) a kettle is a must have.

4 The language.Ok, you don’t need to be hitting the ground running (although the way the budget flights are cutting back we may well be do-ing that soon as the plane lands…) but it is worth taking the time out to learn a few key phrases that’ll help you get along such as, ‘I’m looking for…’ and ‘where is the nearest hospital’ and of course ‘another round please’. But in all seriousness, you can survive with very little Spanish here but why not learn a little more and see how a whole new culture opens up for you?

5 A good barbecue.Agreed this probably isn’t on most peoples’ ‘Ten things you need while in Spain’ lists, but I’m the writer of this piece so I get to choose and a barbecue, in my humble opinion, is as important in Spain as having an oven. During the summer months many people tend to cook outside every evening and having a good barbecue on which to pile the meats (a local fish don’t forget) means you can have the neighbours and friends around whenever you want, not just on those special occasions that need planning.

6 The beach bag.We all have them. Any expat (or any na-tionality come to that) has one; ready pre-pared and available at a moment’s notice. Similar in importance (to expats) as the briefcase that Obama carries the nuclear codes in, the beach bag is at hand and can be grabbed and thrown into the boot of the car (along with the kids…although they go in the seating area normally) and the fam-ily can hit the beach without a moments preparation.Inside, sun creams, trunks, towels, wa-ter, toys, books and crisps (well that’s our beach bag anyway) mean that we are fully prepared every time the moment arrives to hit the beach.

7 A relaxed disposition. If the plumber turning up an hour late is annoying then you’re going to have to get used to some serious relaxing! It happens all the time here and as you watch an-other expat screaming and shouting down the phone as his face turns red, you’ll be the one not worrying whether the plumber turns up to fix that leaking shower today,

tomorrow or even the day after. The fact that he’s coming at some point will be suf-fice.

8 A healthy appetite. They like to eat in Spain and ten courses for a meal can be common. A meal, every meal is an occasion in Spain and there-fore needs time to be spent enjoying it (and time to consume the food mountains that will be brought to your table is es-sential too!). and by a ‘healthy’ appetite I mean just that as the Spanish diet is one of the healthiest in the world and at the same time one of the most delicious ion my opinion. Fresh-caught fish griddled in a little olive oil and salt is superb at any time of the day (or night). Eat well and eat healthy – in Spain you get to do both!

9 A folder.Sounds a bit dull I know but Spain is a country that likes its administration work – and they like to create a lot of it. but I included this because one of the best bits of advice I received when I came to Spain was to keep every bit of paperwork, and keep it where I could easily find it because you will need it, at some point some ob-scure piece of paper with an official stamp on it will be asked for and if you’ve got it all in one place it makes your expat experi-ence very simple indeed.

10 A good pair of legs. Now you don’t have to have the pins of a supermodel nor those of Senor Beckham (for the fellas I mean) but if you really are to enjoy Spain – you need to get out and about, and that means a stroll along the prom, a morning/evening walk along a deserted beach or perhaps an amble into your local Spanish village to sample the food and wine. For most of the year an evening walk is possible every day and Spain offers plenty of options in ‘getting some fresh air’. What better way to enjoy the seaside, countryside or mountain sides or your lo-cal area – you get to meet more people, enjoy the last rays of the day and, of course, reward yourself with a glass or two of wine safe in the knowledge that you’re not driving.

10 things you will need WHEN MOVING TO SPAIN

A fun guide for those thinking of coming here to enjoy THE LIFE!

think are odd about US!

When I first found out that I was going

to be spending a weekend in Murcia I

can´t say I was disappointed but the

thought of two days in and around Bir-

mingham (while it´s raining) didn´t

really appeal so imagine how pleased

I was when the newspaper editor

slapped me (twice) and pointed at a

map of Spain.

Plan

The plan was that I had to spend at least

one night in Spain’s seventh largest city

and get there, look around and then get

home without spending more than 30€!

Whether my editor had been reading about

the loaves and

fishes the week

before I have

no idea – but

this reeked of a

decision made

P.M. (Post Moji-

tos…) still it was

a challenge and

I loaded up my

motorbike bike

for the first leg which would we see

me travel to Elche (19km)bus station and

hopefully to find a bus with space on that

would take me the next 60km, to Murcia…

and not to Birmingham (all we all clear on

that now…?).

Now…coach seats are not the biggest (or

the most comfy – especially for 4.25€) in

the world are they? And when you are sat

next to someone who is possibly Giant Hay-

stack and Hattie Jacques love child, there is

not a lot of room at all. Still, I reasoned,

that it would only be for an hour- I could

put up with that but when he said that he

hoped I didn´t mind if he fell asleep and

probably snored I replied, “no, so long as

you don´t mind me holding a pillow (hard)

over your face when you do?” I didn´t ac-

tually say that…but I should have as he

snored for precisely the next 57 minutes

– giving me about 90 seconds at each end

of the journey for some peace. I reckon

any considerate judge would have let me

off with a warning not to do it again.

Approaching from the north along the mo-

torway from Elche Real Murcia´s football

stadium, La Condomina, stands proudly

above the city and I got to take a good look

at where I would be spending the next two

days as the whole city was spread out be-

low, back dropped by the Cordillera Sur

mountain range in the south. It was then

that I realised that Murcia was a lot bigger

than I’d thought and realised I’d be doing

some serious walking over the next couple

of days.

We dropped down into the city and soon

after leaving the motorway we arrived at a

familiar place for me, the bus station. Al-

though I’d never been to Murcia bus station

before they are the same all over Spain, in

fact all over Europe I think. They have the

same smells, similar people and the bus

drivers just speak a different language but

could be swapped between countries and

nobody would know the difference! Still

we´d arrived and coffee was my first prior-

ity- just as soon as I could get out of my

seat. Once Mr Haystack had finally gone

I prised myself off of the window - that

I’d been rammed up against just an hour

before - and headed off the bus and into

Murcia city.

ER

This was the first time I had pre-booked my

accommodation (I normally prefer to get

wherever I’m going and then find some-

where central) and I had a two kilometre

walk ahead of me to get to the Hostal Cam-

poy where a hot shower and a comfy bed

awaited me. I got neither. My first impres-

sion of the Hostal can´t be printed, nor the

second and the woman behind the glass

window (who was annoyed at my inter-

ruption to some Chilean soap opera on the

TV to her left) optimistically titled a recep-

tionist made Joey Barton look pleasant but

then what did I expect for twenty euros?

Still at least she showed me to my room

(well, pointed) and I was away from her,

and wouldn´t need to deal with her again

´till I left. Exhausted I threw my stuff down

and lay on the bed, and took in my sur-

roundings. I don´t know if my jaw was

open as I looked around but it probably

was because as I looked at the wash basin

and taps at the end of my bed, the bright

white lights, the TV screen above the bed

and the completely (floor to ceiling) tiled

walls I realised that tomorrow morning I

would know (hopefully for the only time in

my life) what it would be like to wake up in

an operating room...

Doh!

Rather than hang around in my room, I

headed out to explore the city. Now…you´d

think that after living in Spain for twelve

years I’d have realised that by 2.30pm in

the afternoon on a Saturday – everywhere

is shut. But I didn´t and so my exploring

of Murcia began by sampling its fine café

bars-and looking at “Opening Hours” signs

on museums but planning to return later

on.

Looking (from the outside) at many of

Murcia´s museums and churches you soon

get the feel of how old this city is – about

1200 years to be (sort of) precise. The city

was founded by the emir of Cordoba Abd

ar-Rahman II in 825 AD and was then giv-

en the name “Mursiya” and within a couple

of centuries it had become a wealthy place,

famous for its ceramics which were export-

ed to Italian towns, building it´s riches in

pottery as well as the silk and paper in-

dustries.

Murcia became the capital of the province

of Murcia in 1838 and, (created by central

government in 1982) became the capital

of the autonomous community (which in-

cludes the city and the province) and these

days it has become known for its thriving

services industry.

Wanderer

I wandered the streets in the evening (Gran

Via is great for shops ladies) and just off of

the main drag I found plenty of nice “Pla-

zas” with lots of good restaurants to choose

from – and most of them were full. Finally

settling in “Plaza de las Flores” -which iron-

ically didn´t have any flowers (although to

be fair I’d earlier been to “Plaza del Dios

(God)” and He wasn´t there either…) I or-

dered a glass Rioja and settled down to

people watch.

Two observations stuck in my mind as I

emptied my (latest) glass and headed for

“Casualty” – or my room as it was official-

ly listed at the hostal. The first was that

young lads need to have it pointed out

to them that wearing your jeans half way

you’re your thighs does not make you look

cool – but does in fact make other people

look at you with something akin to sym-

pathy and hysterics mixed together. And

secondly, girls…? if you are to wear high

heels would it not be a bad idea to practice

walking in them at home before wearing

them out on the town for (what appears to

be) the first time and stumbling along the

pavement like a new born foal..?

Talking of funny walks I headed back – the

Rioja helping me choose an interesting,

and not necessarily straight, route - before

heading up the stairs and getting a grunt

from Joey Barton´s mum as I passed re-

ception.

I had a restless night (I kept hearing some-

one shout “clear!” and then they were put-

ting jump leads on my chest) so having wo-

ken up in a sweat – I dived in the shower

to wake myself up. Ten minutes later- as I

sat on the end of the bed still waiting for

the hot water to come through the shower

head – there was a loud bang and then a

gush of steaming water poured out of the

shower so I dived in. The wonder that is

“Sod´s law” applied itself immediately as

the said “gush” retuned to a trickle the mo-

ment I got shampoo on my head so it was

like trying to wash a car with a water-pistol.

The other problem was that they shower

cubicle was so narrow that my shoulders

touched the sides and with it being round

– every time I turned, so did the whole cu-

bicle, deep joy.

Still, a city awaited (one with almost half a

million people living in it) so it was about

time I went out and met a few of them.

I crossed the “Puente Viejo” (Old Bridge)

and once again headed for the centre which

was beginning to wake up slowly – well it

was Sunday.

Historic

I took a walk and looked at the Cathedral

de Santa Maria which is impressive inside

and out and the nearby Teatro Romea -

the scene of many classic performances

during the year – which is a tasteful build-

ing dating back two hundred years. In

fact many of the modern city’s landmark

churches and monuments date from the

18th century when the city (which had lost

its prosperity of almost 800 hundred years

previously) flourished again after benefit-

ing greatly from a boom in the silk industry.

However, this was to be followed by nearly

a century of problems. In 1810, Murcia was

raided by Napoleonic troops and then it

was hit by a major earthquake in 1829 in

which an estimated 6,000 people died from

the effects across the province with plague

and cholera following soon after (that could

explain my accommodation…).

I settled down for a lunchtime drink at

the Kennedy Bar, just behind Corte Ingles

and was interested to note that they had

a cocktail tastefully (but historically accu-

rate I guess) called “The Head Shot”. I had

a cocktail of my own, well a shandy, and

reflected on the two days in this old city.

It´d been fun (even the ER was growing

on me – although the receptionist hadn´t

softened up) and it was a place I’d come

back to again. Nice bars and restaurants,

friendly people and lots to have a look at.

But for now it was time to head back to the

bus station and my short (ish) journey back

along the motorway to Elche. No offence

Brummies…but I’m glad it wasn´t Birming-

ham…

So that was two bus trips totalling €8.50

and a night´s stay, in what was basically

a resuscitation room, for €20 which meant

that I’d come in under budget for two days

and a night in one of Spain´s most historic

cities - a total cost of €29, next time they´ll

When I first found out that I was going

to be spending a weekend in Murcia I

can´t say I was disappointed but the

thought of two days in and around Bir-

mingham (while it´s raining) didn´t

really appeal so imagine how pleased

I was when the newspaper editor

slapped me (twice) and pointed at a

map of Spain.

Plan

The plan was that I had to spend at least

one night in Spain’s seventh largest city

and get there, look around and then get

home without spending more than 30€!

Whether my editor had been reading about

the loaves and

fishes the week

before I have

no idea – but

this reeked of a

decision made

P.M. (Post Moji-

tos…) still it was

a challenge and

I loaded up my

motorbike bike

for the first leg which would we see

me travel to Elche (19km)bus station and

hopefully to find a bus with space on that

would take me the next 60km, to Murcia…

and not to Birmingham (all we all clear on

that now…?).

Now…coach seats are not the biggest (or

the most comfy – especially for 4.25€) in

the world are they? And when you are sat

next to someone who is possibly Giant Hay-

stack and Hattie Jacques love child, there is

not a lot of room at all. Still, I reasoned,

that it would only be for an hour- I could

put up with that but when he said that he

hoped I didn´t mind if he fell asleep and

probably snored I replied, “no, so long as

you don´t mind me holding a pillow (hard)

over your face when you do?” I didn´t ac-

tually say that…but I should have as he

snored for precisely the next 57 minutes

– giving me about 90 seconds at each end

of the journey for some peace. I reckon

any considerate judge would have let me

off with a warning not to do it again.

Approaching from the north along the mo-

torway from Elche Real Murcia´s football

stadium, La Condomina, stands proudly

above the city and I got to take a good look

at where I would be spending the next two

days as the whole city was spread out be-

low, back dropped by the Cordillera Sur

mountain range in the south. It was then

that I realised that Murcia was a lot bigger

than I’d thought and realised I’d be doing

some serious walking over the next couple

of days.

We dropped down into the city and soon

after leaving the motorway we arrived at a

familiar place for me, the bus station. Al-

though I’d never been to Murcia bus station

before they are the same all over Spain, in

fact all over Europe I think. They have the

same smells, similar people and the bus

drivers just speak a different language but

could be swapped between countries and

nobody would know the difference! Still

we´d arrived and coffee was my first prior-

ity- just as soon as I could get out of my

seat. Once Mr Haystack had finally gone

I prised myself off of the window - that

I’d been rammed up against just an hour

before - and headed off the bus and into

Murcia city.

ER

This was the first time I had pre-booked my

accommodation (I normally prefer to get

wherever I’m going and then find some-

where central) and I had a two kilometre

walk ahead of me to get to the Hostal Cam-

poy where a hot shower and a comfy bed

awaited me. I got neither. My first impres-

sion of the Hostal can´t be printed, nor the

second and the woman behind the glass

window (who was annoyed at my inter-

ruption to some Chilean soap opera on the

TV to her left) optimistically titled a recep-

tionist made Joey Barton look pleasant but

then what did I expect for twenty euros?

Still at least she showed me to my room

(well, pointed) and I was away from her,

and wouldn´t need to deal with her again

´till I left. Exhausted I threw my stuff down

and lay on the bed, and took in my sur-

roundings. I don´t know if my jaw was

open as I looked around but it probably

was because as I looked at the wash basin

and taps at the end of my bed, the bright

white lights, the TV screen above the bed

and the completely (floor to ceiling) tiled

walls I realised that tomorrow morning I

would know (hopefully for the only time in

my life) what it would be like to wake up in

an operating room...

Doh!

Rather than hang around in my room, I

headed out to explore the city. Now…you´d

think that after living in Spain for twelve

years I’d have realised that by 2.30pm in

the afternoon on a Saturday – everywhere

is shut. But I didn´t and so my exploring

of Murcia began by sampling its fine café

bars-and looking at “Opening Hours” signs

on museums but planning to return later

on.

Looking (from the outside) at many of

Murcia´s museums and churches you soon

get the feel of how old this city is – about

1200 years to be (sort of) precise. The city

was founded by the emir of Cordoba Abd

ar-Rahman II in 825 AD and was then giv-

en the name “Mursiya” and within a couple

of centuries it had become a wealthy place,

famous for its ceramics which were export-

ed to Italian towns, building it´s riches in

pottery as well as the silk and paper in-

dustries.

Murcia became the capital of the province

of Murcia in 1838 and, (created by central

government in 1982) became the capital

of the autonomous community (which in-

cludes the city and the province) and these

days it has become known for its thriving

services industry.

Wanderer

I wandered the streets in the evening (Gran

Via is great for shops ladies) and just off of

the main drag I found plenty of nice “Pla-

zas” with lots of good restaurants to choose

from – and most of them were full. Finally

settling in “Plaza de las Flores” -which iron-

ically didn´t have any flowers (although to

be fair I’d earlier been to “Plaza del Dios

(God)” and He wasn´t there either…) I or-

dered a glass Rioja and settled down to

people watch.

Two observations stuck in my mind as I

emptied my (latest) glass and headed for

“Casualty” – or my room as it was official-

ly listed at the hostal. The first was that

young lads need to have it pointed out

to them that wearing your jeans half way

you’re your thighs does not make you look

cool – but does in fact make other people

look at you with something akin to sym-

pathy and hysterics mixed together. And

secondly, girls…? if you are to wear high

heels would it not be a bad idea to practice

walking in them at home before wearing

them out on the town for (what appears to

be) the first time and stumbling along the

pavement like a new born foal..?

Talking of funny walks I headed back – the

Rioja helping me choose an interesting,

and not necessarily straight, route - before

heading up the stairs and getting a grunt

from Joey Barton´s mum as I passed re-

ception.

I had a restless night (I kept hearing some-

one shout “clear!” and then they were put-

ting jump leads on my chest) so having wo-

ken up in a sweat – I dived in the shower

to wake myself up. Ten minutes later- as I

the hot water to come through the shower

I became confused when I heard the word ‘service´....used with these agencies:

Banking ‘Service’Postal ‘Service’

Telephone ‘Service’Pay TV ‘Service’

State & Public ‘Service’Customer ‘Service’Bureaucratic ‘Service’

This is not what I thought ‘Service’ meant.

Then I visited my uncle, he’s a farmer, and he hired a bull to’ Service’ his cows.

Suddenly WOW!!! It all came clear. Now I understand what all those agencies are

doing to us!

RETIREMENT BONUS...

The Navy found they had too many officers and decided to offer an early retirement bonus. They promised any officer who volunteered for Retirement a bonus of €1,000 for every inch measured in a straight line between any two points in his body... The officer got to choose what those two points would be.The first officer who accepted asked that he be measured from the top of his head to the tip of his toes. He was measured at six feet and walked out with a bonus of €72,000.The second officer who accepted was a little smarter and asked to be measured from the tip of his outstretched hands to his toes. He walked out with €96,000.The third one was a non-commissioned officer, a grizzly old Chief who, when asked where he would like to be measured replied, ‘From the tip of my weenie to my testicles.’It was suggested by the pension man that he might want to reconsider, explaining about the nice big checks the previous two Officers had received. But the old Chief insisted and they decided to go along with him providing the measurement was taken by a Medical Officer. The Medical Officer arrived and instructed the Chief to ‘drop ‘em,’ which he did. The medical officer placed the tape measure on the tip of the Chief’s weenie and began to work back. “Dear Lord!” he suddenly exclaimed, ‘’Where are your testicles?’’ The old Chief calmly replied, ‘’ Vietnam ‘’.

Word: DANGEROUS

Riddles - Answers below

1. Three Palefaces were taken captive by a hostile Indian tribe. Ac-cording to tribe’s custom they had to pass an intelligence test, or die. The chieftain showed 5 headbands - 2 red and 3 white. The 3 men were blindfolded and positioned one after another, face to back. The chief put a headband on each of their heads, hid two remaining headbands, and removed their blindfolds. So the third man could see the headbands on the two men in front of him, the second man could see the headband on the first, and the first could not see any headbands at all. According to the rules any one of the three men could speak first and try to guess his headband color. And if he guessed correctly - they passed the test and could go free, if not - they failed. It so happened that all 3 Palefaces were prominent logicians from a nearby academy. So after a few moments of silence, the first man in the line said: “My headband is ...”. What color was his head band? Why?

It's a toughy! It's EASY!

SOLUTIONS:

Answer1. The first one (he did not see any head bands) thought this way: The last one is silent, which means, he does not know, ergo at least one of head bands he sees is white. The one

in the middle is silent too even though he knows what I already mentioned. If I had a red head band, the second one would have known that he had a white head band. How-ever, nobody says anything, so my head band is not red - my head band is white.

Don’t get caught outRecent adjustments to the social security laws in Spain mean that you will be charged for medical services if you don’t have your SIP card in order and up to date. We know of a client who visited his GP and was charged 60 Euros for the consultation at the national health clinic. The charges affect residents and none residents alike and they are not so much changes as tightening up of the existing rules.

If you are a European citizen of Spanish retirement age you will be en-titled to the reciprocal agreement between member countries but now it is important to register and make sure that you have a Spanish SIP card which contains the information in its magnetic strip to what exactly you are entitled.

If you officially work in Spain and contribute to the system by being employed or self employed, the same regulations apply.

The biggest blow is for people who have no right to the European re-ciprocal agreements. American, Canadian, Russian, Chinese citizens and many more are excluded. So are all the Europeans who have not reached official state pensionable age and do not work in Spain.

Like many sectors, the state health department has huge political and financial pressure to keep the below strict budget limits and eliminate the former practise of attending to any medical request whether the patient is entitle to free medical treatment or not.

We all become complacent when we live in Spain due to the easy going nature of our hosts but this now can become costly.

The solution, if you do not think you are entitled to state medical cover is to take out private medical insurance. You may find having aban-doned your home country that you are no longer entitled to cover there either and if you leave it until you need help you may find that your new condition may become excluded by private insurance.

Contact us for more information of the private medical policies available.

Whilst living here in Spain I’ve had the pleasure of going to see a very

talented young artist known as Debbie Slater, she was born in Nottingham and moved to Spain at the young age of ten

with her family, she had no problem changing to the Spanish way of life and started school over here picking up the

language very easily. Debbie was born to sing and loved it

from an early age even at five years old she could sing all the songs from the musical ‘A Sound of Music’ taught to her by her Nan, not long after mov-

ing here Debbie’s parents realised how serious she was about singing and that she wanted to make a career out of it and they could see that she had a raw

natural talent, so she started singing lessons with the very talented Patti

Ross.At the tender age of just fifteen Debbie

did her first solo public gig in Dolores and within a year she was

getting more and more bookings and winning countless singing competitions

she then consequently turned profes-sional.

Since then she has performed at end-less charity events from Gran Alicant

down to La Manga including the Munici-pal Theatre in Torrevieja along the way,

and her repertoire of music is vast for someone of such a young age, people

can not believe the amount of songs this young lady can sing from the 60’s up to the modern charts and even the

great musicals are in there, but there is another bow to Debbie’s singing talents

which is expanding all the time and that is songs from the opera’s which is

her dearest passion.Debbie does cover all areas of the

Costa Blanca so please go to see her show she is a great entertainer as well

as having a fantastic voice she even filmed her first DVD last month with

Viva TV. If you’re a bar or an entertainer and

want to appear in the gig guide or you have any events coming up that you would like me to tell everyone about then please contact me by email on
