Villagers in Colwall are celebrating the creation of Colwall Village Garden – a community orchard and village allotments. Here, the group’s committee tell us how they made their dream reality.“WefinallyboughtthelandinMayandourintrepidvolunteersworkedhardallthatmonthtoinstallfencingandwaterpipingsothatwecouldgettheallotmentreadybyearlyJune.Wehavesucceededinthisandnowhaveall58plotsletto60familiesinthevillage,sowehavehadtostartawaitinglist!Itislovelytoseethesitedevelopastheplotholders,ofallages,starttoplantouttheirallotmentsandalsogoodtoseenewfriendshipsforgedwithinthecommunity.Ithasbeenalongjourney!Wefirstdreamtofhavingourowncommunityorchardbackin2008.Wetriedtobuyorrentseveralorchardsinthevillagewithoutsuccessandconcludedthatweneededtobuylandandcreateaneworchardofourown.Atthesametime,ColwallAllotmentAssociationreachedasimilarconclusionfollowingunsuccessfuleffortstorentlandforallotments.So,wejoinedforcesand

InAprilIwroteabouttreemanagementtopreservetheopengrassland.Thisisonlyhalfthestory,becausewedon’twanttoriskpollutingspringsorwatercoursesonthehillsbytreatingthestumpswithherbicides.Thismeansthatthecutstumpssprout,initiallyformingscrub,butultimatelygrowingupintoforestofmulti-stemmedtrees.Therearetwomainoptionsfordealingwiththis;mechanicaltreatmentorgrazing.Mechanicalcontrolbymowingisverylabourintensive,canbeadangerousoperationonsteepslopesandhasthedisadvantageofleavingcutmateriallyingonsite.Thissmothersthegrassbeneathandrotsdowntoreleaselotsofnutrientsbackintothesoil,encouragingvigorousspeciesofgrasstooutcompetetherareandinterestingopengrasslandplants.Grazingisamuchbetteroption.Sheepandcattlecangrazeinaccessibleorsteepground,breakupdensestandsofbracken,brambleandscrubandcontrolthevegetationgraduallywithminimalimpactonotherwildlife.TheMalvernHillswereoriginallygrazedbyanimalsputoutbypeopleexercisingtheirCommonRights.Thispractisedeclinedasfewerpeopleusedtheirrightsandthelastgrazierfinallystoppedafteradogchased40ofhissheepoveraquarrycliff.

TheMalvernHillsConservatorshaveputinalotofefforttoreinstategrazing.InitiallytheyusedagrantfromtheHeritageLotteryFundtointroduceashepherdandaflockofsheeponthesouthernhills.Then,withHigherLevelStewardshipSchemesupport,theyintroducedsheepandcattletothenorthernandthenthecentralhills.Intheseareasweusetemporaryelectricfencingtokeeptheanimalsfromwanderingontoroadsandtotargetthegrazingonkeyareas,suchasgrazingofftheregrowthfromcutscrub.Wearenowmakingexcellentprogresstowardsreturningsomeoftheareasofscrubandsecondarywoodlandbacktomorevaluableopengrassland.Ifyouseeanyoneinterferingwiththefences,pleasedoalerttheMalvernHillsConservators,byphoningtheirofficeon892002.Ifyouwalkyourdogsonthehills,pleaseensurethatyoukeepthemundercontrol,particularlywhenthesheepareheavilypregnantorhaveyounglambsatfoot.
