Pension Income: A Third Option?

Back in April I wrote about the changes to Pensions concerning the purchase of a lifetime annuity, and the fact you could now delay that purchase and stay invested. Of course with the current market turmoil, risking your pension fund is not a very attractive proposition. Then again, with annuity rates at an historic low, neither is purchasing a lifetime annuity. The good news is there’s a third option, an option that is new to the market place, removes investment risk but does not commit the funds forever. That third option is a Fixed Term Annuity.

What is a Fixed Term Annuity?FixedTermAnnuitiesprovideaguaranteedlevelofincomeforaspecificterm.Thisapproachenablesretiredpeopletoenjoycertaintywithpayments,astheywouldwithaLifetimeAnnuity,butonlyforthetermselectedratherthanthroughoutlife.AttheendofthetermaGuaranteedMaturityAmountisprovided,withwhichafurtherFixedTermAnnuitycanbepurchased.Alternatively,aconventionalLifetimeAnnuityorInvestmentLinkedAnnuitycanbepurchased.Otheroptionsmayalsobeallowedatthispointdependingonthepensionlegislationinforceatthetime.AttheendofthetermoftheFixedTermAnnuity,theincomecanberesetaccordingtorequirementsatthatmoment.TheFixedTermAnnuityprovidesfutureflexibilitybyofferingtheabilitytochangetheamountandshapeofincomeatagreedintervalsduringretirement.Income Levels Thereisnominimumlevelofincomethatneedstobetaken,whichmeansyoucantakethetax-freelumpsumaloneanddeferincometoalaterdate.ThereisamaximumincomelevelwhoselimitissetbytheGovernmentActuary’sDepartment(knownasGAD);moreoftenthannottheincomeishigherthanthatavailableunderacurrentlifetimeannuitybecauseratesareatanhistoriclow.AFixedTermAnnuitycanbefreeofinvestmentrisk.Theincomepaymentsareguaranteed,aswellastheGuaranteedMaturityAmountavailableattheendoftheterm,whichisknownattheoutsetofthearrangement.AswithaLifetimeAnnuity,ifyouaremarriedorhaveafinanciallydependentpartner,theannuitycanbe

There are literally hundreds of causes of leg pain. Apart from injuries to the bones, muscles and joints of the leg there are one or two common problems that I see very regularly.Sciatica and other “Trapped Nerves”The nerve supply to the legs comes from the lumbar region of the spine. Consequently many different back problems can give rise to leg pain. Commonest is the prolapsed disc (wrongly called “slipped disc”) in which the spongy shock absorbing pads between the vertebrae come into contact with the nerve roots and send severe pain down the leg. Instability of the spine (spondylolisthesis), spinal arthritis and narrowing of the spinal canal (stenosis) can also give fairly similar symptoms.

Circulation problemsAlthough seen less commonly than compressed nerves, both arteries and veins can nonetheless cause leg problems. Deep vein thrombosis

(DVT) can cause an intensely painful, hot, swollen, and purplish leg that requires urgent medical intervention. Conversely a blocked artery will often produce a pale, cold and painful leg that is much worse for walking. This also requires medical help. ArthritisThere are many types of arthritis. The knee and hip are notoriously prone to osteoarthritis. The glass-like cartilage that coats the joint surfaces

and allows smooth joint movement becomes eroded and roughened leading to pain and immobility. Severe cases require joint replacement surgery. TreatmentIn my clinics, I see many hundreds of cases of leg pain every year. As ever the correct diagnosis is vital. Those cases that don’t require medical referral will often respond to the safe but simple combination of deep muscle massage, manipulation, medical acupuncture and exercises.

Sowhendidthetraditionofcarolsingingstart?CarolsingingasweknowitreallybeganinthethirteenthcenturywithcommunalsongssungduringcelebrationsatharvesttimeaswellasChristmas.Itwasonlylaterthatcarolsweresunginchurch,andbecameassociatedwithChristmas.InEnglandandothernorthernEuropeancountriesthereisatraditionofChristmascarolling,alsoknownaswassailing,inwhichgroupstravelfromhousetohouse,singingcarols,forwhichtheyareoftenrewardedwithmoney,food,oradrink.
