About this book
ALL ABOUT ENGLISH
This book is designed to support the teaching of English in Lower Primary classes.
In each two-page unit well-known quotes and phrases are used as stimuli forthinking and writing. Units also include short descriptions of the development ofour language. These lead into discussions and meaningful exercises that willenhance students’ abilities to write effectively.
Activities explore diverse topics such as reading for information, alphabeticalorder, similes, following instruction and rhyming words. Practical exercises reinforce comprehension skills and aspects of grammar and spelling. Antonyms, synonyms, homophones, syllables and anagrams are also covered. A wide rangeof text types is used throughout the book. Studying special words and dictionaryexercises explore less commonly used words.
As working mathematically is to Maths so these exercises are to English. There areactivities to suit all ability levels. They will have students thinking, talking, describing and responding. Use sections of this book to enhance student learningacross the range of English outcomes.

a All dinosaurs were big. _____________
b Some dinosaurs ate plants. _____________
c The skeletons of dinosaurs are called fossils. _____________
d A lizard is a reptile. _____________
e Dinosaurs still live today. _____________
What colour do you think dinosaurs were?Colour the picture to show your answer.
Dinosaurs were creatures that lived long ago. Some were huge and otherswere small. Some dinosaurs killed other animals for food. Others ate the leavesof plants. We know a lot about dinosaurs because we have found their bones.Their skeletons are called fossils. Some of these can be seen in museums.
There are still some things we are not sure about. Some scientists believe theywere reptiles, like lizards and snakes. Others believe they were not. It was oncethought dinosaurs were only coloured brown or green. Now we have discovered that some were multi-coloured.

2 The making of our language
Letters make soundsThe vowels we use can make two sounds. They can be short sounds, egbat, peg, big, dog, tug. They can be long sounds (which is the name weuse for them) eg cane, scene, ice, smoke, cute.
Write a list of some words that describe a teddy, eg cuddly.
Imagine you are going to stay with your grandparents for a week’s holiday.
Write a list of things you would want to take with you.
TeddySometimes my teddy is silly,
He tells me he’s scared of the night. So I cuddle him under the blankets,
But he whispers, "Please leave on the light."Annette Moloney (Big Dipper)

But Ruffy kept running around wagginghis tail and trying to jump up into my arms. Ruffy saw a cat and chased it up atree in the school ground. "You’re a naughty dog," I growled. Soon some otherchildren arrived at school and Ruffy ran to them and wagged his tail happily.Sally threw a stick and Ruffy ran after it. He picked it up and brought it back toher. Then the naughty puppy jumped up and hung on to Marek’s jumper withhis sharp, little teeth. Marek’s jumper was ripped. Soon a teacher came andtold me to take Ruffy home straight away. I had to pick him up and carry himall the way.
