    Early history[edit]

The first historical records appear in the Buddhist textAnguttara Nikaya, when what is now the Nizamabad and

Adilabad districts of the Telangana region constituted parts of the Assaka Mahajanapada (700300 BCE).[13]An

Andhra tribe was mentioned in theSanskrit epicssuch asAitareya Brahmana(800 BCE)

andMahabharata(400 BCE).[14]TheNatya Shastrawritten byBharatha(1st century BCE) also mentions about

the Andhra people.[15]The roots of theTelugu languagehave been seen on inscriptions found near

theGunturdistrict[16]and from others dating to the rule of Renati Cholas in the 5th century CE.[17]

Megasthenes,aGreektraveller and geographer who visited the Court ofChandragupta Maurya(322297

BCE), mentioned that the region had three fortified towns and an army of 100,000 infantry, 200 cavalry, and

1,000 elephants.Buddhistbooks reveal that Andhras established their huts or tents near theGodavari Riverat

    that time.[18]

Inscriptions shows that there was an early kingdom incoastal Andhra(Guntur District) ruled first by Kuberaka

and then by his son Varun, with Pratipalapura (Bhattiprolu)as the capital. Around the same time,

Dhanyakatakam/Dharanikota(present dayAmaravati)appears to have been an important place, which was

visited byGautama Buddha.According to the ancientTibetanscholarTaranatha:"On the full moon of the

monthChaitrain the year following his enlightenment, at the greatstupaof Dhanyakataka, the Buddha

emanated themandalaof 'The Glorious Lunar Mansions' (Kalachakra)".[19][20]

TheMauryansextended their rule over Andhra in the 4th century BCE. With the fall of the Maurya Empire in

the 3rd century BCE, theSatavahanasbecame independent. After the decline of the Satavahanas in 220 CE,

    theIkshvaku dynasty,Pallavas,Ananda Gotrikas,Rashtrakutas,Vishnukundinas,Eastern Chalukyas,

    andCholasruled the land.[21]

Scholars have suggested that thePrajpramitSutras, the earliestMahayana Sutras,[22][23]developed among

theMahsghikaalong the Krishna River in Andhra country.[24]A.K. Warderholds that

"theMahynaoriginated in the south of India and almost certainly in the Andhra country."[25]Sree Padma and

Anthony Barber note that "historians of Buddhist thought have been aware for quite some time that such

pivotally important Mahayana Buddhist thinkers asNgrjuna,Dignaga,Candrakrti,Aryadeva,

andBhavaviveka, among many others, formulated their theories while living in Buddhist communities in

Andhra."[26]They note that the ancient Buddhist sites in the lower Krishna Valley, including Amaravati,

Nagarjunakonda and Jaggayyapeta "can be traced to at least the third century BC[E], if not

    earlier."[26]TheDzogchen,MahamudraandLamdrmastersSri Singha,Savari,Maitripaand Virupa lived and

taught in the Andhra region for some portion of their lives or were in some cases permanent residents.[27]

During this period,[clarification needed]Telugu emerged as a popular language,

supplantingPrakritandSanskrit.[28]Telugu was made the official language by theVishnukundinakings (5th and

6th centuries), who ruled from their capital city ofVengi.EasternChalukyasruled for a long period after the

decline of Vishnukundinas; their capital was also Vengi. As early as the 1st century CE, Chalukyas were

mentioned as being vassals and chieftains under the Satavahanas and later under the Ikshvakus. The

    Chalukya rulerRajaraja NarendraruledRajahmundryaround 1022 CE.[29]

The battle ofPalnadu(1182) resulted in the weakening of the Eastern Chalukya dynasty and led to the

emergence of theKakatiya dynastyin the 12th and 13th centuries CE. The Kakatiyas were at first vassals of

the Rashtrakutas, and ruled over a small territory near Warangal. Eventually all the Telugu lands were united

by the Kakatiyas. In 1323 CE,Delhi SultanGhiyath al-Din Tughluqsent a large army under Ulugh Khan to

conquer the Telugu country and captured Warangal. King Prataparudra was taken prisoner.Musunuri

Nayaksrecaptured Warangal from the Delhi Sultanate in 1326 CE and ruled for fifty years

InColonial India,Northern Circarsbecame part of the BritishMadras Presidency.Eventually this region

emerged as theCoastal Andhraregion. Later theNizamrulers of Hyderabad ceded five territories to the British

which eventually emerged asRayalaseemaregion. The Nizams retained control of the interior provinces as

theprincely stateofHyderabad, acknowledging British rule in return for local autonomy. However,Komaram

Bheem,a tribal leader, started his fight against the erstwhileAsaf Jahi Dynastyfor the liberation ofHyderabad

State.[36]Meanwhile, theFrenchoccupiedYanam,in the Godavari delta, and (save for periods of British

control) would hold it until 1954.

India became independentfrom the United Kingdom in 1947. The Nizam wanted to retain the independence of

the Princely Hyderabad State from India, but the people of the region launched a movement to join the Indian

Union. The state of Hyderabad was forcibly joined to the Republic of India withOperation Poloin 1948.[37]

State reorganisation[edit]In an effort to gain an independent state based on the linguistic and protect the interests of the Andhra (Telugu-

speaking) people ofMadras State,Potti Sreeramulufasted until death in 1952. After 1949 JVP committee

report which stated "Andhra Province could be formed provided the Andhras gave up their claim to the city of

Madras (now Chennai)", Madras city became bone of contention. But after Potti Sreeramulu's death,Andhra

statewas carved out of Telugu speaking areas ofMadras Stateon 1 November 1953, withKurnoolas its

    capital city.[38][39]

withBombayandMysore states, respectively and rest of the state (Telangana)was merged withAndhra stateto form Andhra Pradesh state

The State reorganisation Commission has recommended for the residual Hyderabad state i.e. Telangana

region to be continues as a separate state.[40]On the basis of Agreement called Gentlemen Agreement On 1

November 1956, the Telugu-speaking areas of the former Hyderabad state also known asTelanganamerged

with the Andhra state to form the state of Andhra Pradesh. The city ofHyderabad, the former capital of the

Hyderabad State, was made the capital of the new state.

There were several movements to invalidate the merger to form two states viz.AndhraandTelanganain 1969,

1972 and now. 1969 movement was in Telangana region where 369 people died in police firings and 1972

movement was in Andhra region. In 1972 to invalidate the Supreme Court ruling that the Mulki Rules for

Telanagana people protection in jobs and education which were part of Gentlemen Agreement are valid, Jai

Andhra Movement took place and Six Point formula implemented to give legal sanctity to the jobs and

educational facilities to Andhra people in Telanagana region. A Current movement, which started in 1996, is in

Telangana region and is an ongoing political issue in the state. In 2004 Congress party and in 2009 TDP party

have fought elections with alliance with Telangana Rashtra Samithi party (which was born for Telangana state

    formation in 2001).

On 9 December 2009, Government of India announced process of formation of Telangana state. It was

announced that a separation proposal for Telangana would be introduced to the state assembly.[41]Controversy

arose as to the future status ofHyderabad City, part of one of the ten districts of Telangana region.[42]This

move was opposed by protesters from Kosta and Rayalaseema regions; however, the protests in the state

capital Hyderabad were rocked only by pro-bifurcation protests. On 23 December 2009, the government

decided to put the decision of bifurcating the state on hold until a consensus is achieved among the different

    political parties.

This agitated supporters of a separate Telangana state.[43]On 5 January 2010, the Central Government

represented by Home Minister P Chidambaram conducted a meeting by inviting all the recognised political

parties of AP and recorded their stand on the issue. The Government of India appointed a committee, headed

byB. N. Srikrishna,to guide the central government to settle the issue of Telangana

amicably.[44]Thecommitteesubmitted its report on 30 December 2010, a day before its term was to expire.[45]

On July 30, 2013 the ruling Congress party's Congress Working Committee (CWC) passed a Resolution to

demerge Telangana from Andhra Pradesh State as the 29th state ofRepublic of India. On the same day, the,

the ruling coalition, United Progressive Alliance (UPA) also passed the same Resolution creating Telangana

State with Hyderabad as its capital. The timeline for the creation of the new state involves an elaborate

process, which has been allotted a 122 days, or at least four months.[46]The bifurcation has to be approved by

theIndian Parliamentbefore the state is officially created. This triggered the rise ofSamaikyandhra

Movement(United Andhra movement) in the coastal and rayalaseema districts of the state. The agitation led by

Non Gazetteed officer employee unions of the state government with support from students and all sections of

people crossed 63 days upsetting the public life across the region. On 3 Oct 2013, the The Union Cabinet in its

meeting held on Thursday approved the bill for creation of separate Telangana State by bifurcating the Andhra

Pradesh thus forming the 29th State in the country. The cabinet assured that rights of the citizens from all the

regions of the state will be protected and a Group of Minister composed of the Unions Ministers of Home,

Finance, Human Resource Development, Health, Irrigation, Power, Environment and Forests and Railways, as

well as the Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission is constituted to go into the various issues which

concern both States and suggest appropriate measures to address them. The Union Cabinet gave the go-

ahead for the creation of a 10-district Telangana and outlined the blueprint for carving out the country's 29th

state from the current Andhra Pradesh on December 6, 2013. The central government on Friday sent to

President Pranab Mukherjee the draft bill for formation of a separate Telangana state. President Pranab

Mukherjee late on Wednesday evening, December 13, 2013, sent the Telangana draft Bill to the AP Legislature

and gave it six weeks to express its opinion. The draft Telangana Bill was introduced in the State Legislature of

Andhra Pradesh for its members to express their views on the draft bill but no consent is needed. Amid

constant disruptions for four continuous days which made discussions impossible, the Speaker of the

Assembly, Nadendla Manohar, suspended the legislature. Speaker N. Manohar adjourned the assembly till Jan

3 amid uproar by the Seemandhra (Rayalaseema and coastal Andhra) lawmakers opposing the debate on the

bill for the creation of a separate Telangana state.[47][48]

    Main article:Geography of Andhra Pradesh

The Mouth of theGodavari River(East) emptying into the Bay of Bengal

Geographically, Andhra Pradesh is composed of most of the eastern half of theDeccan plateauand the plains

to the east of theEastern Ghats.Andhra Pradesh is divided into three regions. The northern part of the plateau

is theTelanganaregion and the southern part is known asRayalaseema. These two regions are separated by

theRiver Krishna. The third region isCoastal Andhra.[49]The plains to the east of Eastern Ghats form

theEastern coastal plains. The Eastern Ghats are discontinuous and individual sections have local names. The

    Kadapa Basin[50]

formed by two arching branches of the Eastern Ghats is a mineral-rich area. The coastal

plains are for the most part delta regions formed by theGodavari,Krishna, andPennerrivers. The Eastern

Ghats are a major dividing line in the state's geography. The Ghats become more pronounced towards the

south and extreme north of the coast. The Eastern Ghat region is home to dense tropical forests, while the

vegetation becomes sparse as the Ghats give way to the Deccan Plateau, where shrub vegetation is more

common. Most of the coastal plains are put to intense agricultural use. The west and southwest parts of Andhra

    Pradesh have semi-arid conditions.

TheIndian Space Research Organisation'sSatish Dhawan Space Centreis located at thebarrier

    islandofSriharikota,inNelloredistrict of Andhra Pradesh.

The climate of Andhra Pradesh varies considerably, depending on the geographical region. Monsoons play a

major role in determining the climate of the state. Summers last from March to June. In the coastal plain, the

summer temperatures are generally higher than the rest of the state, with temperature ranging between 20 C
